2014 Minor-league center fielder Blake Tekotte plays solid defense and occasionally shows gap power, but several years of futility at the plate have made him an afterthought.
2013 Tekotte, the Padres' third-round pick in 2008, has a broad base of skills that were supposed to have gotten him to the big leagues in short order. Except for a few cups of coffee, that hasn’t happened. Last year he abandoned his patient approach and swung at everything, failing to hit most of it despite playing his home games at the bandbox that is Tucson's Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium. Our earlier comparisons of Tekotte to Jeremy Reed seemed unflattering, but they may have been wildly optimistic. A fresh start with the White Sox could help, but probably not.
2012 Tekotte possesses a broad base of skills but doesn't do any one thing exceptionally well. He has gap power, draws a few walks, steals bases with some success, and plays a solid center field. Tekotte has always been old for his league (he's only a few weeks younger than Cameron Maybin) and doesn't have the strongest arm. Tekotte elicits comparisons to Mark Kotsay and David DeJesus, the downside of which is . . . Jeremy Reed? There isn't much growth potential for Tekotte, but he could be a decent fourth outfielder.
2011 Blake Tekotte is a little guy with decent speed and some defensive ability in the outfield, but the lefty also has some thump in his swing. A .198 ISO in pitcher-friendly San Antonio following a promotion and strong campaign at High-A is noteworthy, though he is 23 and has to work on getting caught less often on the bases.
