BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2018 Theoretically a good left-handed pinch-hit specialist, Shane Peterson probably also excelled as a paperboy and switchboard operator when he was young.
2016 Shane Peterson is the human embodiment of the 90-loss season. He's a physically unimpressive white guy who plays the game the “right way,” though, so internet commenters quickly fell in love with the 27-year-old and his finite, finite potential.
2015 Peterson had a great season in his fourth go as a Sacramento River Cat, finishing at or near the top of the circuit in virtually every non-ratio category aside from homers and steals. His main competition for PCL notoriety was Joc Pederson (no relation), though Peterson is a few years older and has a considerably lower ceiling than the Dodgers' outfielder. Still, the fact that he wasn't playing in a bandbox gives the impression that Peterson could hold his own in the bigs if he got a clean shot at a gig.
2014 On a team with less depth, Shane Peterson would have no problem carving out a seat on the benchhis ability to work the count and efficient thievery on the bases complement his positional flexibility.
2013 Shane Peterson had the obscene walk rate that is common in the Oakland system, and the 24-year old enjoyed the best 38 games of his professional life in his second go-around with the River Cats.
2010 Part of the package received from St. Louis for Matt Holliday, Shane Peterson is a line-drive machine with above-average speed, but he needs to improve his power and patience to stick in either outfield corner.
2009 Shane Peterson was drafted in the second round last year out of Long Beach State, and the former Dirtbags star impressed with his advanced plate approach while playing all three outfield spots and first base.

2013-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)well, the trade of Chris Carter to Houston probably makes Moss the full-time 1B in Oakland. Don't see any platoon mate for him on that roster.
(Chris from LA)
There's still Barton (he of the internal organs I mentioned earlier), Lowrie, Rosales, Seth Smith...even Michael Taylor and Shane Peterson have been taking grounders there recently, according to MLB.com's Jane Lee. It seems like Oakland is still hoping to avoid having Moss face too many lefties. (Ben Lindbergh)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Chances these outfielders will have starting jobs by the middle of May: Oswaldo Arcia ____ Jackie Bradley ____ Shane Peterson ____ Trayce Thompson ____
(Hoot Stromboli from Snowed In)
Hoot, I can't place percentages on each. I think Thompson is the most likely because the White Sox always seem aggressive with their prospects. I would put Peterson next-if only because I think an injury to Beltran could happen and it's too early for OSCAR-then Bradley and finally Arcia. (R.J. Anderson)
2009-07-24 16:30:00 (link to chat)Can you breakdown the Holliday trade. I love Wallace but don't know anything about Shane Peterson or Clayton Mortenson.
(tonipeluso from Oakland, CA)
Cardinals get 2 months of Holliday, As get two prospects (Peterson and Mortenson) that Kevin Goldstein likes but doesn't love, and Wallace, who was likely a 1B in the MLB, and I'm pretty sure Pujols ain't going anywhere. Billy Beane was able to trade Holliday for more than he traded to GET Holliday, and the Cardinals legitimately upgrade their outfield. Is it too cliche to say win-win? (Eric Seidman)
