DateQuestionAnswer
2009-05-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Uh, is "kidney procedure" the new slang for superdupersteroids, or did Joe Mauer just decide to stop messing around and become Mike Piazza?
(Dan Pawson from Boston, MA)
I traded him in Tout.

No, really it's just the normal small-sample variations you'll see in any two week period for almost any player. Juan Pierre is tearing it up in Manny Ramirez's absence, but it doesn't make him a great player. Mauer *is* a great player and he's on one of those runs that you just sit back and enjoy. (Will Carroll)
2008-07-21 15:00:00 (link to chat)Any change in opinion on Mauer? It seems as though his down year last year was due to his hernia and now that he's healthy again, he's the best catcher in baseball.
(Wendy from Madrid)
Really, Madrid?

My opinion on Mauer never changed. All that's standing between him and legendary status is staying reasonably healthy. You can be a catcher and good for a long time (Ivan Rodriguez, even Mike Piazza), but given the early career leg injuries, I don't think Mauer is going to have that durability. It's his bat that's valuable, so I'd find a catcher that could go three days a week, catch Mauer three days a week and DH him the rest. (Will Carroll)
2008-05-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)Joe Torre has stated in the papers that he wants to give Russell Martin rest from catching but still keep him in the lineup at 3B. How will this affect Dewitt, LaRoche and Garciaparra?
(Dodger Fan from California)
Well, first thing, I think this is an indication that Torre is *way* more creative than he's generally given credit for. But my inclination is that I'd just rather give Martin the extra time off than find another place to play him. He has a very, very good bat, but not a Mike Piazza type of bat where you're really killing yourself when he's not in your lineup. (Nate Silver)
2008-05-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)How good is Tim Beckham, really? I know he's one of the best players in the draft, but is his ceiling really *that much* higher than Posey's? So much so as to offset the huge difference in their probability? Isn't a solid catcher (even if he's not Mike Piazza offensively) with a high probability extremely valuable?
(Peter from Boston)
It is. But the question is, is that REALLY want you want to take at 1:1? Posey has a far better chance of being a productive big leaguer, while Beckham has a better chance of being an impact player. That's the conundrum. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm stealing this question from Joe Posnanski, but who do you think is the best Mets position player of all time?
(Tommy from OPS,FL)
Willie Mays? Mike Piazza? Daryl Strawberry? That's one for Jay Jaffe. (Will Carroll)
2008-02-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. My question to you is: how well do you think most major league teams do at recognizing advanced defensive metrics? There are some obvious examples of star-level hitters who have no business holding down their defensive position. Am I too focused on a handful of examples or is there a ways to go here in terms of adoption?
(Tim from Portland, OR)
Oh, I think most all teams understand and apply the advanced metrics (for example in the arbitration process).

But the question really is how in the larger picture does that player's defense effect the total value you're getting out of the position. Sometimes there may be an obvious way to hide that defender or mimimize their negative impact (moving Jeter to third and A-Rod to short) but often having a premium offensive player at a defensive position (Victor Martinez?, Mike Piazza) has a larger upside. (Dan Fox)
