2020-01-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think teams like the Diamondbacks and Reds have done a good job, or attempt at least, keeping themselves relevant during rebuilds? Or are they just failing to push through to the final stage?
(Bizarro Craig (I have good opinions) from New York)
Diamondbacks yes (they've stayed above .500 for a while now) and Reds not so much. I liked what they did last year but it wasn't really indicative of their performance before 2019. In terms of whether I like both *right now*, yes. I appreciate that they're both making a push and trying to be competitive. I don't fully know what Arizona could do to put them on par with the Dodgers heading into the season (which isn't to say they can't beat them during it), but I suppose I'd like to see Cincy try to address shortstop more meaningfully than Freddy Galvis or "we'll put one of our outfielders there." (Craig Goldstein)
2017-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)will Scott Kingery develop enough to become an everday player? Good numbers, speed, defense for level so far... but Philly could spend it's cash for expensive options. Not to mention Galvis could bump there when Crawford established.
(Roger from Roger)
Jesus, am I about to type "I don't know if Scott Kingery is an upgrade over Freddy Galvis?" Yeah, he might not be. Kingery seems like one of those dudes that is nice to have, but one you generally don't want to have as a starter. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)Need a shortstop in NL-only deep dynasty league, traditional 5x5, and options are running slim: Gregorious, Furcal, Hechavarria, Dee Gordon, Ruben Tejada, Freddy Galvis, Haveabananarama. Not a rebuilding team, should compete this year, but did not keep Gregorious.
(Greg from KC)
Gordon is the guy I'd take a flier on at the moment. OBP risk and could flame out again but he has the upside. Furcal and Gregorius are the next two players on my list but - as you point out - this is a deep NL-only so the options are unsurprisingly uninspiring. (Mike Gianella)
2013-07-29 11:00:00 (link to chat)2014 Phillies. Who gets the most-to-least big league plate appearances? Cody Asche, Maikel Franco, Freddy Galvis, Cesar Hernandez, Delmon Young, Michael Martinez?
(Broken Arrow from Far From Philly)
Cody Asche, just a hunch no real thing to back that up. (Zach Mortimer)
2012-03-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)The kid has looked great! With Mayberry looking strong, the Phils are not the old people's home the press makes them out to be. Agreed?
(Fear Freddy Galvis! from second base)
Freddy Galvis and John Mayberry do not make the Phillies a suddenly youthful team. Age is still a concern. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Jason, really have enjoyed your spring training articles. Was wondering how you'd rate the gloves of three glove-first SS in the news this spring Freddy Galvis, jose iglesias and andrelton simmons? Any 8s here? Any of them have a chance to to be anything beyond an 8/9 hole hitter?
(Matt from NJ)
Thanks. 8s are very rare. You will see some 8s on the glove of Iglesias, but even the best gloves struggle to live up to that elite grade. I don't see anyone in that group that profiles above an 8/9 hole hitter. You can dream of the what-ifs, and there are always what-ifs that take a player from the present to the future, but I don't see the type of stick necessary to hit atop a major league lineup. But if the gloves prove to be 7+ tools, the skill-set in the field will buttress the offensive deficiencies. (Jason Parks)
2011-09-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)Freddy Galvis isn't all glove anymore, is he?
(bp from Philadelphia)
Sure isn't, but all he's really done is prove he can play every day while batting 8th. (Kevin Goldstein)
