2017-03-16 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who is going to ultimately be the starting catcher this season for the Red Sox?
(RDBL2014 from San Francisco)
I don't know. Seems like a huge question to be so markedly unanswerable at this stage, for a team that intends to contend. I guess my money falls on Christian Vazquez. Derek Norris is available... (Matthew Trueblood)
2015-11-05 12:00:00 (link to chat)I feel like Daniel Norris really didn't help Andrew Cashner with pitch framing this year. Is that on point?
(Mike from SoCal)
Derek Norris is actually a good framer according to our data, we have him saving over 12 runs with presentation this past season. Now, I'm not an expert in presentation (ask Harry Pavlidis!) but it's possible that Norris did better with a Kennedy or someone else, and less well with Cashner. I'm not sure about how framing varies by pitcher type, but it's conceivable that a guy who works around the zone and has less loud stuff might be easier for the catcher than someone like Cashner. (Jeff Long)
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat)My dynasty league appears to hate catchers...Derek Norris, Yan Gomes, and Yadier Molina are all on waivers in a very deep 12-teamer, and there is NO trade market (other than when I overpayed for Sal Perez in my first year in the league and didn't know about the value of catchers until Brian McCann was dropped for David Murphy). Is this the case for all dynasty leagues?
(John from Texas)
I don't play in any dynasty leagues. I would assume that given the keep forever nature of dynasty that the finite shelf life of catchers would make this more likely than in a Roto or redraft. But I'd have to ask our dynasty experts.

Bret?

BRET?!?!?!? (Mike Gianella)
2015-05-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)Would you trade Derek Norris for Paxton straight up? League parameters: dynasty standart roto categories 17 teams 40-man roster (10 minor slots) 1 active catcher slot, I have Salvador Perez and Swihart too.
(navarra from Ukraine)
I wouldn't, although it seems that you have the need so it's OK from that standpoint. Can you possibly aim a little higher? (Mike Gianella)
2015-04-13 15:00:00 (link to chat)What's up with Wilin Rosario? Is his potential upside, what's left of it, worth holding onto him or do I cut bait and pick up Derek Norris?
(ramtax from Maryland)
I'm assuming this is a fantasy question? I usually gchat Mau or Craij with my fantasy questions, have you tried that? (Sahadev Sharma)
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat)How should I view Derek Norris moving forward in a dynasty league? Will he have a full time gig next year? Do I want him to have a full time gig when he comes back due to his splits?
(Norris from Chicago)
Hey if you know what the A's are going to do lineup wise next year you have me beat. Bret Sayre and Craig Goldstein share a mutual love for the man and I've grown to appreciate his aesthetic, I WANT him to have a full time gig next year, but regardless he's worth owning. (Mauricio Rubio)

2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you like Derek Norris or Mike Zunino better long term for fantasy?
(Bill from Boston)
Norris. (J.P. Breen)
2014-06-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)Derek Norris or Wilson Ramos ROS?
(Kenny from Milwaukee)
I'll stick with Norris, but it's probably close. I like what Norris can do w/ his counting stats in Oakland. They're a juggernaut this year. (J.P. Breen)
2014-05-15 20:00:00 (link to chat)Derek Norris is getting more starts against righties. Good call to hold onto him.
(RotoLando from Cloud City)
This is not a question, but I'll allow it. May the Jesus Aguilar be with you. (Bret Sayre)
2014-03-19 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Bret, besides Joe Mauer -- who is ending up on your team a lot this season? cheers, k
(Kurt from Tacoma)
Alex Gordon always winds up on a bunch of my teams. Same with Albert Pujols. Then in the later rounds, Martin Perez, Dustin Ackley and Derek Norris (where applicable). (Bret Sayre)
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat)Is Derek Norris worth a pick in 23 round(keeper)?
(dshemie8 from Montreal)
Oh absolutely. He's Bret Sayre's pet but I think he has 15-15 potential and that's crazy valuable out of a catcher. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)My catcher situation in a 10-team AL-only league is ugly. I spent most of last year with Chris Iannetta in my lineup, then I picked up Josh Phegley when he was called up. Will Phegley be usable in such a league in 2014? The next-best available option seems to be Derek Norris.
(Fred from Chicago)
I'd take Norris over Phegley in a heartbeat. (Craig Goldstein)
2013-09-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Josmil Pinto or Derek Norris for 2014 in an AL only league? Can keep either for $1. Thanks!
(Neil from London )
Norris for sure. We might be seeing the best SSS of Pinto. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Paul I'm in a deep dynasty league. Current catchers on my roster are Ramos, Derek Norris, and Austin Hedges. Needless to say I'm screwed. I have two first round picks for new prospetcs this year and usually I just go for best prospect available regardless of positional needs. Should I take Mike Zunino or stick to drafting the best player available?
(JL from Chicago, IL)
Stick to the best. I actually like Ramos this year, though it'll take a while for him to get going as he'll back up Suzuki to start. (Paul Sporer)
2012-05-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Which one (or more) of the A's' non-hitters are closest to running out of chances?
(edwardarthur from Illinois)
Daric Barton comes to mind. A's fans have been frustrated with him for years now, though some of that is his approach more than his actual performance. Turns out that not even followers of Team Moneyball appreciate guys who strike out because they take a lot of pitches. Me, I have a Jack Cust shirsey in my drawer, so I love the guy.

One wonders about the length of Kurt Suzuki's leash, too. He appears to be a good defensive catcher with the blocking of balls, and I don't recall him doing too badly by Mike Fast's pitch-framing studies, either, but a repeat of his 2010 year offensively might open the door for Derek Norris sooner rather than later. (Jason Wojciechowski)
2012-01-20 14:00:00 (link to chat)Derek Norris' ceiling in the majors? .260/.380/.450?
(jamin67038 from Wichita, KS)
I'd take at least 20 points off that batting average and therefore all three. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-10-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Derek Norris? (And by great in a uniform, did you mean that Mitchell's rounding into form again or just that his body is Verduccian)
(JT from Michigan)
Mitchell just looks like an athlete; I didn't get a good look at his face, but I doubt he's Verduccian in that regard. As for Norris, I think he's a damn good prospect that gets mistakenly labeled as a damn great prospect. You have to love the patience/power combo, and the ability to play solid-average defense behind the plate makes him a very valuable prospect. But can he make enough contact for it to matter? The hit tool is better than he showed in '11. (Jason Parks)
2011-06-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)Derek Norris = Mickey Tettleton?
(jamin67038 from Wichita, KS)
That was KG's comp, and I think it makes sense. (Jason Parks)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)Derek Norris drops from 28 to 41- any particular reason?
(jamin67038 from Wichita, KS)
Needs to bounce back from the hand problems, needs to make more defensive adjustments. Ok, I've done two hours, and have 30 minutes left, so keep 'em coming! (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-03-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of catcher logjams, what should the Nats do and what do you think they will do?
(Tim from VA)
I'd really want to let Flores prove that he's healthy. If that strands Ramos in Syracuse in the meantime, so be it, but I was a big Flores fan back in the day, and if he's sound, there's no better way to turn him back into a commodity than show him off first. Tough for Ramos? Sure, but then again, the future belongs to Derek Norris, even if that's coming at the back end of 2012 and beyond. (Christina Kahrl)
2011-01-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)KG - Loving the Top 11's and thanks for the Chat! Derek Norris' write-up really intrigued me, especially with the improvements defensively. Is he on your '11 breakout list and would .280+ avg. with 25+hr's be his ceiling in the majors?
(Shane from Miami)
Yes on the breakout list, but I don't think he's a .280 hitter. More of a .250 type with big power and tons of walks. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-11-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)You and Jason were talking about Derek Norris on the podcast. If he puts it all together is he a .280, 30Hr type?
(Shane from Miami)
I think that's a bit high. I think .260-270 with 20+ HR on a ton of walks. That's incredible offense for a catcher. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-11-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Derek Norris looks great, plenty of people think Ramos is pretty good, and Jesus Flores is ambulatory in Venezuela. Should the Nats be trading one of the catching prospects? Who would matchup well to exchange for a starting pitcher?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Remember when the Rangers had eight million catchers? Now they have none. Don't trade anyone, as you can never have enough catching. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-06-07 18:30:00 (link to chat)Does having a good catching prospect like Derek Norris have any impact on the choice to move Harper to OF?
(Tim from DC)
Not at all. It's just the bat being so far ahead of the glove. The Pirates take Taillon, and I'm very happy for Pirates fans as they took the right guy. Just massive, crazy upside. Best HS righty we've seen for years. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-12-11 13:00:00 (link to chat)True or False, Derek Norris will be at the top, or near the very top, of the list for catching prospects by the end of next season?
(Greg75 from Washington)
That's true now, no? I think he's one of the top catching prospects in the game. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-11-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)With all the hype surrounding Strasburg, I'm interested in Derek Norris. You were pretty high on him coming into the year and he certainly performed. What's his upside and a comparison if you've heard one. Thanks!
(Paul32 from Washington)
I think he could be an All-Star catcher with average, power and walks. Just outstanding. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Derek Norris? Will he be catching for the Nats at some point next year?
(Dennis from Monterey Park)
I think he's fantastic. I also think 2010 is unrealistic. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-05-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Kevin, Derek Norris was a guy you thought might have a breakout and he has looked awfully impressive so far, do you think he'll move quickly?
(Evan from Washington)
His defense will determine his timetable more than his bat. He's still pretty rough around the edges behind the plate. (Kevin Goldstein)
