2017 The combination of added pitching depth and a back injury left Carlos Frias out in the cold.
2016 Frias is your third-favorite pair of jeans or a turkey-and-cheese on white or a Domino's pizza; he lets you get by, but he's never what you want. It seems obvious that the 26-year-old Dominican belongs in the 'pen, yet the Dodgers wound up needing to start Frias 13 times and the results were as expected. Batters hit .303/.369/.404 against him as a starter; that's basically Jose Altuve's slash line. Despite not being terribly effective, Frias logged the fifth-most innings of any Dodger last season, and despite averaging nearly 95 mph on his fastball, he struck out just 13 percent of the batters he faced. Perhaps he can aspire to more as a full-time reliever, but the Dodgers will need to keep him out of the rotation to find out.
2015 When the Dodgers added Frias to the 25-man roster in August, a great "who?" arose in Los Angeles. He signed out of the Dominican Republic in 2007 and made his debut after seven years in the minors. Armed with a low-to-mid-90s fastball, a slider and a changeup, Frias was involved in a couple of memorable games for the Dodgers. He made his first career start against Washington on September 3rd, tossing six scoreless frames, only to see the Dodgers lose in 14 as the bullpen imploded on multiple occasions. Later, Frias drew a start in Colorado and recorded just two outs while allowing 10 hits and eight runs. The Dodgers lost 16-2. Despite that, he has the talent to contribute out of the bullpen.
