2020-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What would you say is the best case outcome for Heliot Ramos? Is there a comp you can think of? (Carl from San Antonio ) | I don't have a specific comp, but something between the Ryan Braun decline years and Yoenis Cespedes seems like a range. (San Francisco Giants Top 10 Chat) |
2017-03-16 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Any guys on the Mets you like more than others? (Carsom from Wentz) | Yes. Yoenis Cespedes seems much better than Juan Lagares to me. (Matthew Trueblood) |
2016-09-23 12:30:00 (link to chat) | What is the article that you came closest to writing but didn't? (Emmett from Chicago) | I was cleaning out some folders this week and found a fully written piece looking at the logic of a WPA-based argument for Yoenis Cespedes' MVP candidacy last summer. I had one sentence that I wanted to make better, so I held it for a day or two and by the time it was ready it was outdated.
The oldest unwritten article idea on my tickler file is called, simply, "Baseball players are salmon," which a pastor suggested to me in 2009. I might still do it. (Sam Miller) |
2016-08-01 16:00:00 (link to chat) | Any thoughts how the Met's Outfield shakes out. No center fielder and it seems like Conforto mainly to the bench. Doesn't make a lot of sense, does it? (Rick from Chicago) | Likely going to be Curtis Granderson, Jay Bruce, and Yoenis Cespedes with Granderson in center. I suspect Michael Conforto cycles in to give all three rest from time to time. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but the Mets haven't cared about defensive metrics - at least not the public ones that we all see - for the last two years. (Mike Gianella) |
2016-01-14 20:00:00 (link to chat) | What would you do if you're the white sox. Sign a big name to plug in the holes or a smaller name or stand pat and hope guys like Tim Anderson and Carson fulmer can contribute in 2016 or a combination of the above? As they stand now they seem unlikely to make the postseason, what should they do to get there? (Jeff from Inland empire) | I'd take the middle road, sign one big bat like Yoenis Cespedes or Justin Upton and then hope that Anderson and others can make an impact. They seem unlikely to make the postseason but they also look a lot like the Mets did entering 2015, with a staff that has the potential to be great and an offense that falls a little short. Of course they're not in the NL East so they can't just beat up on their division and hope to get lucky. But that would be my path for the White Sox. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Which among Alex Gordon, Justin Upton, and Yoenis Cespedes do you think would be the best fit for the Angels and their dire need for a LF? Which one do you think is the likeliest signing for them? (Dennis from LA) | Man, that's a great question. I think Gordon is the least likely of these, but he might be the best fit. I love Gordon. He's one of the best defensive LF I've ever seen and he's not exactly bereft of offensive talent. Yo is the most likely, though. Artie loves dingers. (Christopher Crawford) |
2015-10-19 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Mike -- do me a favor and pick one FA OF for next year -- Alex Gordon, Yoenis Cespedes, Justin Upton, or Jason Heyward. (bgrosnick from Ann Arbor, MI) | Upton though they're all really close. (Tout Wars Champ Mike Gianella) |
2014-10-03 11:00:00 (link to chat) | Adison Russell, Yoenis Cespedes.
I guess this isn't really a question but whatever.
(JP from TX) | I agree. (Jason Wojciechowski) |
2014-08-06 16:30:00 (link to chat) | Explain the name. (Daniel B from KY) | A few years ago when he was still a free agent, Yoenis Cespedes made an amazing showcase video called The Showcase. At the end of his 20 minute workout session there is a clip of him roasting an entire pig over an open fire with his family.
And the rest was history. (Lame and unimportant history, but history nonetheless) http://cespedesfamilybarbecue.com/about/ (Cespedes Family BBQ) |
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat) | Can you ask Yoenis Cespedes if he likes his roasted pork with or without donkey sauce? (Guy Fieri from FlavorTown) | He's with me in Boston now, so I can ask him, yes. That makes me happy. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat) | In a dynasty league would you give up any of Yoenis Cespedes, Jason Heyward, or Evan Longoria for Oscar Taveras? (Shawn from Ballpark) | I would consider Longoria and Cespedes. I'm waiting out Heyward's long term prospects as I think he can be more valuable than Taveras over his career. (Mauricio Rubio) |
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Who do you prefer in a dynasty league between George Springer and Yoenis Cespedes? I have Springer and have been offered Cespedes basically straight up for Springer. Can't decide whether or not to take it. Obviously Cespedes would be safer but Springer could be a monster even if he only hits .250. What do you think? Thanks! (treynay3 from Indy) | This is erring on the side of safety, but give me Cespedes. I don't think everyone really understands just how often Springer is going to strike out. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-01-30 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Who do you prefer in a dynasty league between George Springer and Yoenis Cespedes? I have Springer and have been offered Cespedes basically straight up for him. Can't decide whether or not to take it. Obviously Cespedes would be safer but Springer could be a monster even if he only hits .250. What do you think? Thanks! (treynay3 from Purdue) | In a keeper league that I thought would last a long time, I'd probably trade Cespedes for a top-20 prospect center fielder who's four years younger and almost major-league ready. (Ben Lindbergh) |
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you think Yoenis Cespedes is still a potential 30/20 guy or will nagging injuries continue to hold him back? (Shawnykid23 from CT) | I think he can do it, but I think the injuries you mention will cut the steals down somewhat and make him more of a 25/15 guy. (Mike Gianella) |
2013-10-07 18:00:00 (link to chat) | I own Justin Upton, Yoenis Cespedes, Domonic Brown and Matt Kemp in a dynasty league. Can I count on either of them to make a huge step forward next year to elite status? Thanks! (Derek from St. Louis) | Hi Derek:
I wouldn't think any of them are big "huge step forward" guys, but Brown and Kemp are probably your best bets. Kemp will bounce back assuming health (a big if, though) while Brown is still young enough that he could maintain or get a little better. (Mike Gianella) |
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat) | If you had Kimbrel in a dynasty league, name a hitter who you trade him for. Thanks (rkessl from chicago) | A top-50 bat that could help me win this year, since I want to win NOW in every league I'm in, regardless of format. Kimbrel will help do that more than any other closer, so give me a bat who will also be a difference maker. Let's say, Paul Goldschmidt? Allen Craig? Yoenis Cespedes? Just spitballing some names there.. (Cory Schwartz) |
2013-03-20 11:00:00 (link to chat) | Thoughts on Bryce Harper for this year? How high up would you draft him? Thanks (ganz1080 from CT) | I took him 16th overall in a mock draft earlier this winter, and while I probably won't be that ambitious in a "real" draft, I do think he can be a top-20 player. More realistically let's say he hits .280 with 25 HR, 85 RBI and 20 SB... very similar to Jayson Heyward or Yoenis Cespedes. (Cory Schwartz) |
2013-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Has Chris Young done anything positive in A's camp this year? Do you see him being a contributor to that team? (Steve from IL) | He hasn't done much in the Cactus League at .231/.310/.385, but I don't really care about that. He's a really weird fit on the A's, who have Coco Crisp and perhaps Yoenis Cespedes who can play center field. So he's probably not worth as much to them as he might be elsewhere.
I wouldn't be stunned to see a trade from that outfield sometime this season if they develop a need in the rotation or elsewhere. (Zachary Levine) |
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat) | What do you make of Cespedes this year? Is he a .290 hitter or is he more like .260? Also, how many homers/steals are we getting from this guy? (Ricky from Chicago) | I like Yoenis Cespedes a lot. I think he builds off of last year and think that the batting average is going to stay where it was or maybe even get a little better. I'm looking at a ceiling of 30/20 for Cespedes, though I'd ink him in for less if I were projecting my team totals. (Mike Gianella) |
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Drafted Buster Posey ($8), Yu Darvish ($10), Yoenis Cespedes ($2), Jayson Heyward ($16), Adam Jones ($19), Adam Wainwright ($23) and Sergio Romo ($1). Get to keep 4, values increase by $3 this year. Definitely keeping Posey, Darvish & Cespedes, so who should be the 4th? I'm leaning towards Heyward. (Steve from Milwaukee) | Can you send an AJ Bombers burger in the mail to me, please? I'm keeping Posey, Darvish, Cespedes, and Heyward. (Jason Collette) |
2013-01-14 14:00:00 (link to chat) | How do you project Yoenis Cespedes in his sophomore season with the A's? Could he potentially go 25-25? 30-30? (Tim from Oakland) | I don't know if he'll have the steals, but if he's healthy all year, I could see him hitting 30 homers. (Ben Lindbergh) |
2012-12-28 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Keeper League question: I was offered Yoenis Cespedes for Matt Harvey, Archie Bradley and George Springer. Should I pull the trigger? (Brett from Toronto) | I'm the wrong person to ask on account of my undying affection for Cespedes. I'd probably do it. Harvey and Bradley could be awfully good, but Cespedes is already there. (Geoff Young) |
2012-11-01 13:00:00 (link to chat) | If a player could have 80-grade body aroma, and you were allowed to smell that player's body in person, what would be the scent and who would be the player? (Jason Parks from NYC) | Gotta go Yoenis Cespedes here. You look at his eyebrows and you just know that a man who cares that much about his grooming must also smell wonderful.
He probably smells like a mixture of the spray at Cayo Santa Maria, plantains, and a hint of saffron. (Ian Miller) |
2012-10-30 13:00:00 (link to chat) | given the trade that brought crawford to the dodgers, where does yasiel puig play? i'm assuming puig will be big league ready by the middle of 2013. (temple from madison wi) | Hi Temple, thanks for the question. Puig has 23 minor-league games under his belt and turns 22 in December. The Dodgers signed him to a huge contract, and the easy comparison is to Yoenis Cespedes, but Cespedes played last season as a 26-year-old. I don't think there should be a sense of urgency to get Puig to the big club. Fans may want to see an immediate return on investment, but the real value is in getting him to LA and keeping him there. So for me, a guy like Crawford - assuming he's healthy - provides a nice safety net while the Dodgers evaluate Puig's development as a player and his acclimation to the United States. If Puig is as good as many folks think he is, he will create his own opportunity and "where he plays" will sort itself out before long. (Geoff Young) |
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I know KG loved him, but how did you feel about Yoenis Cespedes prior to 2012? Did he exceed your expectations, and is there an MVP candidate in there? (Kevin from San Diego) | I didn't think anything about Cespedes before 2012. After watching him ST, I knew he was legit, but I didn't think he would be this good this soon. He needs to refine the offensive approach, but the power is so legit that he does have MVP type of promise. (Jason Parks) |
2012-08-07 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I know the sample size is small, but do you think the A's Chris Carter has turned the corner and can be a solid major league bat going forward? A middle of the order of Josh Reddick, Yoenis Cespedes, and Carter has been a pleasant surprise this year. (Tom from Madison) | I was holding on to Carter for one more year, and I'm glad I did. His at-bats this year are so much better, and that's been the big difference for him. I think he'll be solid, to use your word. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2012-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Is there any player in baseball whose name is as fun to say as Yoenis Cespedes? (Mike from Miami ) | Maybe Rougned Odor, but he's still a long way from the bigs. (Ian Miller) |
2012-05-31 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Yoenis Cespedes, vampire hunter? Does your love take it even there? (Evan! from Africa!) | This is asking a lot. I love Yoenis Cespedes with most of my heart (I realize it's rather early for that), but he probably can't sing and Buffy's backup crew is a lot better than Cespedes's. (Except for Josh Reddick, who is Giles, obvs.) (Jason Wojciechowski) |
2012-04-12 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Over/under 200 strikeouts for Yoenis Cespedes? (Greg from Denver) | Assuming he receives the commensurate number of plate appearances, I'll take the slight over. (Derek Carty) |
