2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat) | Will either Fernando Martinez or Kirk Nieuwenhuis be an impact player for the Mets outfield within the next several years? (kernan from Ogden) | Well, I'm bothered by the term impact. Maybe we have different definitions. I think they both could be every day players, and good ones, but is that impact? Take any team, even a first place one, and count the impact guys. I like those two -- but I don't think they'll be impact guys. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Keep up the great work! Love the minor league updates. Any hope for Fernando Martinez? (iorg34 from Mudville) | Hold on... I have to call my psychiatrist. (Steven Goldman) |
2010-03-03 14:00:00 (link to chat) | So Fernando Martinez is younger than Jared Mitchell and has performed in every level of the minors at a young age, whereas Mitchell has had just a hundred or so at-bats in A-Ball, and he's 19 slots ahead of F-Mart? Huh? (Pat from MA) | Well, one is a pure CF and one isn't -- that's a huge difference right there, no? (Kevin Goldstein) |
2009-12-29 15:00:00 (link to chat) | So does Fernando Martinez get traded, or is he a RF? (Chris from Boston) | Trade value is so down I wouldn't consider moving him. Let him get reps in Triple-A, and if he's better than Francoeur by July, get him up. But he needs extended playing time at Triple-A, because he's stalled a bit due to the injuries. (Joe Sheehan) |
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Does this make sense for the Mets and Cubs? Cubs trade Carlos Zambrano and Alfonso Soriano to the Mets for Luis Castillo, Oliver Perez and Fernando Martinez. (Matt from Whippleville, NY) | It might work for the Mets, but there's no way it works for the Cubs. Perez is even more dubious as assets go than the Big Z, and Castillo's somebody only the Mets were willing to afford. Put Milton Bradley in Soriano's place, however, and maybe you make Jim Hendry fidget about personal wish fulfillment. (Christina Kahrl) |
2009-06-05 15:30:00 (link to chat) | Similar to the Phillies question then, shouldn't the Mets be trying to trade Fernando Martinez (a desired prospect they 've shown no intention of playing) for some goodies they can use now? (josher464 from (NYC)) | If they are holding onto him because he is one of their top prospects and they feel they have a relatively small window for actually remaining competitive, then yes. However, I tend to think the Mets have more of a chance of being successful with their core a few years down the road than the Phillies. Remember, Rollins/Utley/Howard/Werth/Ibanez/Victorino are all north of 28. (Eric Seidman) |
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Fernando Martinez for Aubrey Huff and George Sherrill? The Mets seem to be built to win-now, and adding a legit bopper to a struggling lineup AND a solid lefty to bolster a suddenly-struggling Putz would make sense. (Silv from NY, NY) | The Mets wouldn't trade Martinez for Johan Santana, so I'm going to say that they probably won't for a patch at first base and a mediocre lefthanded reliever. Andy, you have to disguise these better than that. (Joe Sheehan) |
2008-11-12 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Turn off the video games, and tell me why I should believe my buddy when he says Fernando Martinez is a better prospect than Tim Alderson. (Phil Bell from Alderney) | Martinez provides more ceiling, Alderson provides more certainty. From what I can tell, most rankers balance those very differently. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat) | Speaking as a Mets fan to an A's fan, what do you suppose it would realistically take to pry Huston Street from Billy Beane's far-from cold, dead hands? And do you think Street poses the best solution to the Mets bullpen woes (from here he seems to be a better solution than paying retail rates for K-Rod and/or Fuentes, or wishcasting on Putz to be healthy)? (wrightfan5 from MD) | I think you can expect Beane to hold out for the best bits in the organization, but I really doubt that the Mets would deal Fernando Martinez for Street, and if I'm the A's, I don't need or want guys like Mike Carp. Danny Murphy's interesting, but basically this would have to involve a lot of low-level pitching to make it worthwhile. I suppose it depends on whether or not consecutive humiliations at the hands of the Phillies adds any additional impetus; at some point, Omar's going to be the guy taking the blame for failure. (Christina Kahrl) |
2008-11-03 13:30:00 (link to chat) | Doesn't it make more sense for the Mets to trade Fernando Martinez than keep him? The window for this team is NOW and by the time he would be ready it seems like the window would be closed. Isn't this a rare case where it's better to trade the future for today? (josher464 from NYC) | I can accept that argument, but the real problem then is what is it you want to get with Fernando Martinez? Huston Street? That's a waste of resources; better to just burn money and sign K-Rod if that's your play. (Christina Kahrl) |
2008-07-29 16:00:00 (link to chat) | How about this then:
Reds get: FMArt, Parnell, Lowrie,
Sox get: Dunn
Mets get: Manny (J.P. from Hartford) | FMart? Please send full names ...
Oh, three way, so that's top Met prospect Fernando Martinez. I don't hate that one. I don't think it works, but I don't hate it. (Will Carroll) |
2008-07-03 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What's your guess at a major's ETA for Colby Rasmus & Fernando Martinez, given their slow starts in 2008? April 2009? (Goldeye99 from Canadian Prairies) | Rasmus - Aug. 08; Martinez - June '09. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Mets play the arbitration-eligibility game, even if Martinez's performance begins to demand a promotion, which it hasn't yet. (Jeff Erickson) |
2008-06-26 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What should the Mets do to improve their playoff chances without mortgaging the future more than they already have? (Jessica from NYC) | I don't think there's much they can do. Maybe improve at the margins at the deadline, but you're not going to see, say, Sabathia or Teixeira (spelled it without looking it up!) added. What are they going to trade? Fernando Martinez's stock isn't exactly rising. (Dayn Perry) |
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat) | Realistically, taking Delgado and Castillo's contracts and the Mets unlikelihood to cut them into account, is there any personnel move (or moves)the Mets can make to improve their on the field production? I look at the roster and see so few tradeable parts. (Kerri Mulqueen from Kew Gardens NY) | I wouldn't trade Fernando Martinez, so probably not. I guess you could see what the market is for Mike Pelfrey, who's a cheap midrotation starter for a few years, but I doubt you'd get much back. You could always sign Bonds, which would be a huge upgrade for the offense and a wash defensively with Alou. (People who complain about Bonds' defense and availability need to consider that Moises Alou is making $7 million this year.) (Joe Sheehan) |
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat) | Help! What should I do??? (Omar Minaya from Queens, NY) | Don't trade Fernando Martinez. Rebuild the bench. Sign Barry Bonds. (Joe Sheehan) |
2008-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | How about Howard to the Mets for Maine, Fernando Martinez, and another pitcher or two? The Mets certainly have the first base hole... (Eric J from Norman OK) | Makes sense, but they'd be at a Tigers level of minor league potential and I doubt the Phillies would deal him within the division. Add in that that might push the Mets over the "luxury tax" and balance that with the new park and ... I dunno. Maybe. It's not the worst suggestion I've heard. (Will Carroll) |
2008-03-07 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I just saw Fernando Martinez take Cliff Lee the other way. I can't take it anymore. I don't want to wait for him to be ready. I want to cuddle with him every night. (big baby from nj) | Well, I hate to say it, but Martinez is a guy that PECOTA is pretty far down on. One of the interesting changes we added this year was to incorporate a variable to account for a player's draft slot. But this leads to a bit of a dilemma with Latin American players, since it's not fair to treat them as though they were American players who got no signing bouns. So what we wound up doing is essentially placing foreign-born players (mostly Latin American) into their own category; PECOTA prefers to compare them to one another. And when we did that, it seemed to hurt the projections for certain kinds of players, particuarly guys like Martinez who's primary claim to fame is their age. This could be for any number of reasons, but I think it's worth remembering that Latin American players may be playing baseball essentially for a living by the time they're 14 or 15. So in some sense, they're effectively a bit older, if age is taken as a proxy for accumulated baseball experience. (Nate Silver) |
2008-01-31 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What caused Fernando Martinez's ranking to drop so much from last year? I realize he didn't light the world on fire in Double-A, but doesn't he get some credit for holding his own there at such a young age? (Jessica from NYC) | In the same tone of many answers, ranking Martinez as the No. 51 prospect in all of baseball DOES give him credit for doing so. Lack of power and the fact that he's going to move to left field is what hurt him significantly in my eyes. (Kevin Goldstein) |
2008-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Will the Mets end up with Johan? (Nick from NYC) | I think they will if they included Fernando Martinez in a deal. It seems that the Twins feel they can really bolster their farm system in a hurry by taking the Mets' offer. (John Perrotto) |
2008-02-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | When do you think Fernando Martinez will play his first major league game? (Zennith from Iowa City) | It would have been a lot sooner had he gone to the Twins instead of Gomez. One wonders how hard Minnesota tried to get him. Did they "settle" for Gomez, or actually prefer him? Hmmm... (David Laurila) |
2008-01-10 13:00:00 (link to chat) | The word on the grapevine for a while has been that that Mets have offered Guerra, Humber, Mulvey, and Gomez for Santana, and that the Twins are holding out for the Mets to add Fernando Martinez.
What would you make of this 5 for 1 trade? Should the Mets jump on it? Begrudgingly accept it?
(big baby from nj) | You're trading for one year of a player and the rights to sign him to a market-value contract for six or more seasons. No, I would not make that trade.
Bill Smith is in a bind. I think he's actually handled it well so far, not accepting a bad offer. He has time, still, to find the right one. It may be the most important decision he ever makes as Twins' GM, no matter how long he holds the job. (Joe Sheehan) |
