DateQuestionAnswer
2020-03-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)In a shortened season, will suspension be shifted?
(spotted cow from Rockford)
This is an excellent question. Several players are under suspension, including Domingo German (63 games) and Michael Pineda (39 games), entering the season. A shortened season clearly lessens their impact if the suspensions are not reduced. I have not heard anything suggesting the suspensions will be reduced. In fact, I imagine they will not. MLB normally takes a hard line on suspensions so I would plan for all suspensions to remain in full force and effect.

Meanwhile, MLB and the players' union are in discussions regarding other important items impacted by the delayed and shortened season, such as service time in a shortened season. Normally, a full year of service is 172 days. A normal season is 187 days. Hence, teams wait until mid-April, or at least 15 days, to call up top prospects to prevent a year of service. A shortened season may, for example, only be 120 days. MLB teams will want to reduce the amount of days for a year of service from 172 in 2020 to, say, 105. Players will not want any changes of course. How service time shakes out will be an interesting development to follow. (Jesse Roche)
2019-08-30 16:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. I have some SP about to be activated as the Fantasy playoffs start so I may need to drop a SP or two in my 20 team H2H league with QS and K/9. Who would you drop from this list: Michael Wacha, Mike Montgomery, Adrian Houser, Steven Brault, Michael Pineda, Steven Matz?
(Festivus from Phoenix)
You are welcome for the chat. Wacha and Monty are the names that stand out here. Montgomery has a sweet two-start schedule next week (DET, @MIA) so I'd probably cut Wacha first. He hasn't gone into the sixth inning in, like, forever (or, since June 28, to be exact). (Jon Hegglund)
2019-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat)My best hitters in a dynasty league are Mike Moustakas and Trey Mancini. My top scoring pitchers are Joe Musgrove and Michael Pineda. Am I doomed?
(Elton from Pacific Northwest)
Hi Elton - or whichever of your leaguemates this is! The good news about dynasty leagues is that you're never doomed the way you are in a redraft. It might take a while to rebuild but Moustakas and Mancini have been really good this year and Musgrove is starting to tap into some of that potential. Flip some of those guys to contenders to rebuild the system, draft well, and don't worry about being doomed. (Darius Austin)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)I could use some help with my last two keeper spots (10-team dynasty). I am currently deciding between Josh Bell, Franklin Barreto, Jurickson Profar, Reynaldo Lopez, and Michael Pineda. Which two will provide the most value over the next 5 years? Thanks!
(Kevin from Alexandria, VA)
Hey Kevin, I'd keep Bell and Barreto. In a 10-team dynasty, there is so much pitching available on the waiver wire that I wouldn't keep a non-ace level starter. I like Barreto's speed, even if he's not at shortstop long-term. Bell is the interesting one for me. Every time I saw him in person, I came away impressed. (George Bissell)
2016-03-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat, Michael. What are the breakout (or breakdown!!) chances for pitchers such as Martin Perez, Kevin Gausman, Daniel Norris, James Paxton, Michael Pineda, Joe Kelly, Kyle Gibson, etc. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
(DJ from Dallas )
Already talked about Gausman. I think Paxton might get squeezed out of a surprisingly deep Mariners rotation. Pineda's already good, Gibson kind of is what he is at this point, as is Kelly, who in a just world would've moved to the bullpen full-time two years ago.
That leaves Perez, whom I've always been down on compared to what appears to be the consensus, and Norris, whom I like to bounce back if only because he's got an open rotation spot in Detroit, to say nothing of it being unlikely that he receives a surprise cancer diagnosis this year. (Michael Baumann)
2015-02-04 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like best for the long haul? Michael Pineda, Danny Duffy or Shelby Miller.
(Gmurphsiu02 from St Paul)
I can't, in good conscience, put Pineda over either of these guys. He keeps teasing and showing flashes, but then pulls the rug out from under. It's frustrating.

I'll very hesitantly take Miller>Duffy. I think the Braves can refine his mechs a bit, and get his CB back to a strike out pitch. Duffy has yet to do it for a full season yet, but I do think he has slightly higher upside, lower floor. (Jordan Gorosh)
2014-09-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Neither New York team (I am not partial to one over the other) has a clear path to return to relevance. The Mets have superb young pitching, but lack any depth of hitting talent- after Duda and Murphy, what is there? As for the Yankees, I can't see them as anything other than Oakland-East, in the absence of any upcoming talent. Where is the Jeter in this system? What do you suggest?
(BeplerP from New York, NY)
I can't remember who said this, it may have been Ben Lindbergh, but the Yankees have a fairly simple path to returning to relevance: sign all of the good players. I think Hanley Ramirez is Bronx-bound this offseason, as is one of the better starting pitchers on the market. They'll need more from Brian McCann than they got this year, but a turnaround doesn't seem THAT unlikely. Provided Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda stay healthy in 2015, they'll contend.

As for the Mets, it all comes down to how much they want to spend on free agents. David Wright should bounce back, and I like Dilson Herrera a lot. If Matt Harvey comes back healthy, there's a lot to like here, too. (Daniel Rathman)
2014-08-19 14:00:00 (link to chat)Roster advice: 10-team/12 keeper league, prepping for the playoffs, currently holding on to Michael Pineda (small sample, hope he's healthy), Taijuan Walker (fingers crossed for another Sunday start), Kevin Gausman (steady contribution), and Jake McGee (slew August) on the pitching staff....looking to add Dexter Fowler for depth at the plate (he'd be first off the bench)...Would you drop any of the pitchers for Fowler? PS: Staff FWIW: Greinke, Stras, Lester, Kluber, Archer, Rosenthal, Robertson, Jansen w/ Wacha on DL
(pmitchell60 from NOLA)
I would stock up on RB/WR first unless you can snag a top QB in rounds 2/3. Really depends on how teams and league scoring. Manning, Rodgers, Brees are head and shoulders above the pack while you can stock pile useful PPR WR/RB late. (CJ Wittmann)
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat)12-team dyno league with 5 DL spots. What do you do with Michael Pineda? Does he ever have a healthy season?
(Rob from Albany)
He's first cut in a 12 tm league. If you're headed towards a roster crunch that's the guy I'm cutting. (Mauricio Rubio)
2014-05-07 17:00:00 (link to chat)Who is a better DL stash in a Dynasty League: Pineda or Medlen?
(teaaker from Seattle)
Probably Michael Pineda because his injury doesn't seem as serious. I hate, hate, hate speculating on injured players. It's such a crapshoot. (Mike Gianella)
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in a 10 team mixed league with QS in place of W. Right now my starters are Strasburg, Sonny Gray, and Michael Pineda. I have an open roster spot I want to fill with another starter to give me a shot at competing in QS. I figure I might as well grab another long shot starter to join Gray and Pineda. I have it narrowed down to Danny Salazar, Jose Quintana, Taijuan Walker, or Roenis Elias. Who's my best bet?
(Kyle from Detroit)
Good god man, step away from Roenis Elias. Out of the options you listed, Quintana is the safest bet while Salazar provides the highest upside. If you're truly just going for QS, I guess I'd go Quintana. I like Salazar a bit more overall, though, even if he's overrated. Walker's injury scares me now, so I'm staying away. (Ben Carsley)
2014-03-14 09:00:00 (link to chat)What's your take on Michael Pineda for this year and long term? I'm looking at him for my deep 35-man 10 team dynasty (keep anyone forever) league where my staff currently is Strasburg, Darvish, Verlander, Cole, Archer, J. Gray, Giolito, Walker, and Haren.
(uvasuperman from Atlanta)
I still don't have a good handle on this. I hear reports about how great the velocity is, but that has never been the issue. What's the secondary stuff going to look like? Can he stay healthy/ He has #2/#3 potential if everything comes together, but I'd like to see some MLB reps before I make a call here. Pineda for Haren in this format is a worthy risk if you believe in Pineda. (Mike Gianella)
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat)Did you see Michael Pineda pitch at all last year? What have you seen or heard about him and what do you think 2014 numbers look like. Could it be him, and not Tanaka that leads a resurgent Yankees rotation?
(brukru from Pittsford, MI)
You have to take a wait-and-see approach with Pineda. There's no way to tell what to expect with him after so much downtime, and you certainly can't bank on him to lead a rotation. I absolutely loved Pineda when he came up and feel like I was one of the early internet prospect guys in on him (humblebrag), but I don't know what to think now. I'd avoid for 2014, there are better gambles. (Ben Carsley)
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat)16 team dynasty league, our batting cats are runs, homers, RBI, walks, K's, steals, average, and OPS, and Pitching cats are K's, QS, wins, saves, holds, era, whip, and k/bb. I got two offers for my 1-1 pick which would be tanaka. Edwin Encarnacion and the 9th pick in the draft or my 1-1 and Michael Pineda for Cano and a reliever or something. Which is the better offer?
(Connor from Alaska)
The first offer (Encarnacion and the pick) is better. EE is pretty close to the top first basemen in the majors while that nine pick should be pretty sweet, even in a keeper. Robinson Cano is obviously really good but I feel like you're getting a 2 for 1 with the first deal and a 1-for-1 with the second one. (Mike Gianella)
2013-08-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)What's up with Michael Pineda?? When will he be called up??
(The minor league guy from Illinois)
The Yankees just activated Pineda from the DL a month ago after the guy was shelved for 18 months, so it could take awhile. Pitchers can be very slow coming back from shoulder injuries, especially with respect to velocity and regaining strength around the joint. The Yanks need help, but the last thing they want to do is rush Pineda back and risk re-injury. At least Montero has been a flop in Seattle, in the challenge trade that broke hearts on both sides.

2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)I traded Michael Pineda, Erasmo Ramirez, my first rounder (the 1-15 at new owners best, 1-20 if I finish in first) in a prospect draft, and all my FAAB all for Zack Wheeler. This is a 20-team dynasty. I know it was a steep price, but if I am making a run for it this year, worth it, right?
(AJ from Phoenix)
That's REALLY steep. You need Wheeler to perform pretty well this year. I probably wouldn't have done that. You might not be happy with it until next year. (Paul Sporer)
2013-06-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Michael Pineda going to return to his old form at some point after his return? That would be neat.
(Tony from Home)
Safe bet says no, but he's a worthy lottery ticket. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is there anyone you are especially interested to scout?
(Alex from Anaheim)
I am most interested in seeing what Michael Pineda has after coming back from his surgery. He was fun to watch pitch in 2011. (Jason Collette)
2013-02-15 12:00:00 (link to chat)I offered Starlin Castro, Ian Kennedy, Glen Perkins and Gary Brown for Adam Jones, Billy Hamilton, and Michael Pineda in 20-team dynasty. The leagues uses LF/CF/RF over OF, and has deep pitching requirements. The manager I proposed this to has McCutchen in CF, Jones is his DH. He has nobody at SS currently (my backup is Segura). He proposes back Robinson Cano, Starlin Castro, and Ian Kennedy for Adam Jones, Neil Walker, Jason Vargas, and Michael Pineda. I'm not off my game when I say this guy is one suit short of a full deck, am I?
(Louis from Glendale)
I'd trade one of my kids before I traded away Billy Hamilton in a league. For him to take Hamilton out of the deal and ask you to throw in Cano is rather entertaining. Who does he think you are, Jeff Loria? (Jason Collette)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm targeting Michael Pineda in a dynasty league. I'm in the position where I can maybe sneak into the playoffs as the #8 seed. Pineda would be great for me because a) his youth/talent makes him a great fit for my young/high ceiling team; and b) He's a potential 2nd half add that I can stash on my DL through the majority of the season. If I am buying, what's a fair offer for him in general (I know rosters would help here, no can do!). If you own Pineda, what are you asking for? Are you selling, or holding?
(AJ from Phoenix)
If I'm contending I'd probably sell, but in a dynasty league he still has significant value. Either a top prospect or a solid contributing MLB asset like a Brandon Belt. (Paul Sporer)
2013-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)I really need a SS and could use upgrades at SP. I own Andrew McCutchen in a league that uses LF/CF/RF. I have been offered Starlin Castro, Ian Kennedy, and Glen Perkins (closer for Min.) for Adam Jones, Billy Hamilton, and Michael Pineda. Should I take this deal?
(Donald from Chicago)
It sounds like you're going for 2013 and this deal really aids your 2013 run so I'm on board with it. Tough to give up that potential of Hamilton, but Castro is a blossoming stud in his own right and I've always like Kennedy. (Paul Sporer)
2012-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)The Grand Rapids Grasshoppers ask that you peek into the future to tell us what will become of Michael Pineda. Should we just release him now, avoiding the frustration of another injury-riddled pitcher? Also, what would you do with a pitching coach who has worked with the likes of Pineda, Joakim Soria, Rich Harden, Joey Devine, Francisco Liriano, Shaun Marcum, Adam Miller, et al? lol
(GR Grasshoppers from Michigan)
Always good to hear from my favorite ex-36er. Being a Cubs fan, I'd send that pitching coach to St. Louis, of course.

You of all people I don't need to tell about the inherent riskiness of pitchers, but as I said before I think Pineda will come back strong. If I were in, say, a Strat league, I'd hang onto him. Unless you'd rather trade him for, oh, I dunno, Matt Capps. (Ken Funck)
2012-04-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thank you for answering my earlier question. Assuming Michael Pineda's shoulder is OK, what do you see as his upside? Chances of achieving that upside?
(Dennis from LA)
NUmber two starter, capable of chewing a ton of innings and blowing people away when it comes together. I'm still a huge fan of Pineda and I hope he is healthy. (Jason Parks)
2012-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you're the Yankees, how panicked are you about Michael Pineda at this point?
(Joe H. from Washington, DC)
If I'm the Yankees, I know a lot more information so my answer would be better. But I don't think they need to feel much panic about this year -- the drop-off from Pineda to Garcia or Pettitte really isn't that big this year -- and I haven't seen anything that suggests he's got anything superduper serious going on. So no panic at all. Might even throw a party this afternoon, and invite all my friends. I'm the Yankees wooooohoooo! (Sam Miller)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Derek, thanks for chatting! Question for you on drafting Yu Darvish. In Yahoo! mocks, he's dropping into a cluster of SPs the likes of CJ Wilson, Madison Bumgarner, Josh Johnson, Adam Wainwright, Josh Beckett, Michael Pineda, Dan Hudson, and Mat Latos. How would you rank these 9 players on your draft board?
(BR from NYC)
Hmm... off the top of my head, I'll go Beckett, Johnson, Wainwright, Bumgarner, Darvish, Hudson, Wilson, Pineda, Latos. (Derek Carty)
2011-11-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)How do you feel about Tommy Hanson, Michael Pineda and Aroldis Chapman in 2012? I can only freeze seven players from my 2011 roster. Hanson's injuries worry me.
(dscala from Durham, NH)
What's the league setup and who else do you have? I think Pineda is a definite freeze, and Chapman is a guy to let go (unless it's a very deep league and your other options aren't that intriguing). Hanson is a keep unless you have some overwhelmingly good options, because if he's healthy, he's excellent, and he'll have had a lot of time to rest up. (Derek Carty)
2011-06-29 13:30:00 (link to chat)I don't think Alexi Ogando's really a rookie...
(Bob from Seattle)
Ogando did not go over the rookie limit of 50 innings last season but he may have surpassed the service time requirements. Anyway, I'll change my vote to Michael Pineda. (John Perrotto)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)ETA for Michael Pineda?
(Kevin from Seattle)
Certainly sometime this year, but let me say this. VERY few prospects reach the big leagues on some set timetable. More often than not, they need a break from above. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-02-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Ken, who would you say has the better chance to succeed in Roto ball Michael Pineda or Matt Moore? What about Brett Lawrie versus Manny Machado? Thanks -
(Touch em all Joe from Toronto)
Pineda vs. Moore is a tough one, and you can't go wrong either way (though in Strat I'd take Pineda, avoiding Moore's incipient leftiness). Gun to my head I pick Pineda, since pitching in Seattle should really help his raw numbers. Machado is more valuable than Lawrie if he can stick at shortstop. If he moves to third base -- well, I STILL think he's likely more valuable than Lawrie in the long run. (Ken Funck)
2011-01-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you rather have in your organization over the next 2-3 years, (A) Michael Pineda or (B) Wil Myers?
(bugthecat from Bella Vista)
B. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-08-20 15:30:00 (link to chat)Should Michael Pineda be a part of Seattle's starting rotation next year? What do you project as his ceiling?
(Mike from Texas)
No. 2 ceiling at least. I'd like to see more consistency out of his secondary stuff, but I bet he spends a good chunk of 2011 in the big leagues. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Michael Pineda a top 50 prospect?
(Paul from Spokane)
My gut says yes. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)Happy Canada Day Kevin! Do you think Michael Pineda is a future frontline starter? He's been fantastic this year.
(Bedley from Toronto)
It's Canada Day? Happy Canada Day. It should be noted, than an apology to Canada is on the agenda for the podcast. Pineda has frontline ceiling for sure. I'd like to see more consistency from his secondary offerings before I go there, however. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-05-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Michael Pineda a top 100 prospect at this point? Top 50?
(Rich from Seattle)
100 maybe. 50? hard to see that. (Kevin Goldstein)
