2014 The thing about a 40-man roster: You can't have more than 40 guys on it. Sanabia is living proof that there is some number of faulty starters too high for even the Marlins to handle, and he was squeezed off (and plucked by Arizona) in October. As someone with fringe-average stuff across the board, Sanabia has little room for error in his control, which evaded him last year. His 10 percent walk rate was his highest since he was a 17-year-old in the Gulf Coast League. He already had low strikeout rates and below-average groundball skills, so that left a guy with a pickoff move. A groin strain in May, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season, not only saved him from erasing all of the positive career WARP he has saved from 2010, but it also allowed the Marlins to move Nathan Eovaldi into the rotation without actually having to make a decision.
2013 Sanabia impressed the Marlins during a three-month big-league stint in 2010, when he was barely old enough to enjoy the Miami nightlife, throwing strikes and fooling his fair share of batters with a plus changeup. But he suffered elbow soreness throughout the 2011 season, and slipped down the depth chart when Beinfest reeled in Eovaldi and Jacob Turner in midseason trades last year. The righty lacks the oomph on his fastball or the bite on his breaking pitches to ever emerge as more than a fifth starter or swingman, but hes an excellent option as far as Triple-A depth goes, and should compete alongside the aforementioned higher-ceiling arms for a major-league spot in spring training.
2012 Elbow soreness sidelined Sanabia for the first half of last year, but he made it back to the majors for a pair of starts at the end of September. Had he been healthy, Sanabia likely would have been called on to plug leaks that sprung in the Marlins rotation with Josh Johnson's shoulder injury and Javier Vazquez's early ineffectiveness. Still only 23, he'll enter spring training with plenty of competition for the fifth starter's job from Brad Hand, Wade LeBlanc, and Chris Volstad.
2011 A 32nd-round pick in 2006 at the tender age of 17, Sanabia has simply made his way up through the system with moxie and surprising inexorability, showing fine command of a sinking fastball and touch on a slider. His changeup could use work, but for an utterly untouted 21-year-old to make the majors and not get eaten alive says something nice about the system's underrated depth. For now, the lanky control fiend will be in the mix for the fifth slot, with some hoping that he'll add velocity and better fade on his change as he fills out and matures.
