2013 Andrew Carpenter is a low-velocity sinker-slider guy who doesn't walk or strike anyone out in the minors, but has done a whole bunch of both while also giving up numerous long balls in brief stints in the majors.
2012 Claimed on waivers from Philadelphia in September, former second-round pick Drew Carpenter didn't impress in a cameo with the Padres and remains a fringe right-hander with good control but little else.
2011 This is what it looks like when a prospect hits a wall in Triple-A. Carpenter was a second-round selection for the Phillies in 2006, but he has been mediocre since climbing from Clearwater to Lehigh Valley in 2008. In 2010 he took no steps forward, which in reality is a step back for a pitcher without the strikeout stuff to impress the front office. Add to that the fact that he faced an average of three fewer batters per outing and walked an extra batter every third start in comparison to the previous year, and Carpenter’s path to the big leagues looks hazy at best.
2010 After struggling in Double-A in 2008, Carpenter had a fairly good season last year, but his command still isn't where it needs to be. When called up to the big leagues to make an emergency start, he struggled to find the strike zone, which is the essential prerequisite for making it as a finesse pitcher. Carpenter throws a number of different pitches, but the problem is that none of them are terribly good. He does a good job of striking some hitters out in the minors by hitting his spots, but if he is going to be successful in the big leagues, he is going to need to have good control. Even then, his fly-ball rate is tailor-made for self-destruction in CBP, and the upside's that he winds up as fourth starter material, probably elsewhere.
2009 Carpenter has five pitches, but the problem is none of them are especially good. He's a command/control type with little margin for error, and that margin disappeared when he moved up to Double-A at got hit around for a .305 batting average. Once seen as a possible back-end rotation piece, he needs to figure out some kind of something—better control, different pitch sequences, a trick offering—to recover even that modest status in a pivotal year in his development.
