2012-04-12 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Derek, thanks for the chat. Many people know I am better performer in the second half of season career-wise. Would you mind name more players you consider worth monitoring or even prospects who could have a big showing?
(Adam Laroche from National Capital)
Sorry, Adam, but I don't buy the whole first-half/second-half thing for most players. As far as prospects that could be recalled and make an impact go, there are a lot of guys that could fit the bill. To name a few: Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, Trevor Bauer, Joe Benson, Joe Wieland, Robbie Erlin, Leonys Martin, Tyler Skaggs, Jacob Turner, Brad Peacock, Jarrod Parker, Nolan Arenado, Danny Hultzen, and Brett Jackson. (Derek Carty)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)I had Leonys Martin penciled in as a keeper for a starting OF spot this year, but Ron Washington now says otherwise. Any thoughts on AL minor leaguers who might be making an impact come June/July?
(ChuckR from Chicago)
Wash said as long as guys stay healthy, which is impossible for Josh Hamilton and Nelson Cruz. Martin is very near the top of such a list. Also, Mike Trout's a possibility given injuries or trades, Joe Benson in Minnesota, Jacob Turner (if he doesn't start the year with the team), the Oakland pitchers (Peacock, Parker, Milone to a lesser extent), and Danny Hultzen for Seattle. (Derek Carty)
2012-02-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)What would you estimate for the number of times out of 100 that Joe Benson has a better all around career than Jaff Decker?
(goiter6 from MN)
Big big edge to Benson. (Kevin Goldstein)
2012-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)So assuming the Twins outfield is Revere/Plouffe, Span and Willingham, any thoughts on how that all changes when Joe Benson noses in? Would you expect Benson for late this year and for good starting next year?
(ssp833 from Twins Territory)
There are certainly ways for Benson to nose in this year. Span is both an injury and trade risk. Willingham is an injury risk (CHIPPER gave him all reds coming into 2011). I like Revere, but he has a non-zero demotion chance. Doumit is also an injury risk, and if he's lost for a long time, it's possible the team shifts Willingham to DH most days and plays Benson in the OF. I think by Opening Day 2013, the team will have found room somehow for Benson. (Derek Carty)
2011-10-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is there any chance the Twins do something big in the offseason? Would you let Cuddyer and/or Kubel walk if you're Billy Smith?
(richardkr34 from Saint Paul, MN)
When was the last time they did anything big that was acquiring as opposed to deacquisitioning? You would like to think they are finally ready to invest and rebuild, because I'm not sure how this team avoided losing 100 games. In an ideal world, Cuddyer and especially Kubel would walk, because they just don't give you that much bang for the buck, but you have to put SOMEONE on the field next year. Joe Benson can only take one spot. Between their habitual complacency and the tragic injuries to Mauer and Morneau, this team is really in a bad place. (Steven Goldman)
2011-09-02 14:00:00 (link to chat)When do you believe Joe Benson will reach the majors? Is he a genuine power/speed guy? A starting OF? What's his upside?
(Lloyd Cole from Chicago)
Where are the Commotions? I think we'll see Benson in 2012 and he still has some development in him. The power, the speed and the arm are all true plus tools, I just don't think he'll ever hit for a high average. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-02-28 13:00:00 (link to chat)How close was Joe Benson to the top 101?
(Klochner from MN)
VERY close. One of the last cuts. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-01-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)four years: Joe Benson or Aaron Hicks
(Cris E from St Paul, MN)
B. (Kevin Goldstein)
2010-10-12 12:00:00 (link to chat)The Twins OF is looking mighty crowded. With guys like Ben Revere and Joe Benson (to a lesser extent) knocking on the door, who do think they might try and move in the off-season?
(Tobias from Minnesota)
They've got the option on Kubel at just under $5MM, which is nowhere near the lock it looked like it would be after 2009. There's also the question of Jim Thome, who is just totally and completely awesome in pretty much every way. One possible solution would be to let Kubel DH and make room in right. But that means no more taters for Jimmers. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-05-07 14:00:00 (link to chat)Joe Benson = this year's Dom Brown for an uber-toolsy guy who puts it together en route to becoming a higher-end prospect?
(George from Ft Myers)
Not convinced. (Kevin Goldstein)
