2014-06-17 20:00:00 (link to chat)Everth Cabrera: Swing rate up, contact rate down, BB% waaaay down, K% back up to where it was in 2012, SB% not great, and he can't even blame is craptastic batting average (.223) on bad luck (BABIP .290). In a 12-team 5x5 mixed, he's droppable for someone like JJ Hardy, Owings, or even Brad Miller, right? If we needed Steals, Villar would actually be an upgrade, right?
(Beam Me Up Scotty from London)
Your logic sounds good to us. We confess to being excellent at finishing 4th in our roto leagues, so we probably aren't the best source of advice for a 5x5 question. We will say that we don't love Cabrera in Scoresheet, and we would definitely prefer the other guys that can post a better OBP and may have some defensive value as well. (Scoresheet Chat with Ben, Jared, and Ian)
2014-05-07 17:00:00 (link to chat)Hi Mike, two questions. First, how many AB's do you give players before moving on in fantasy? Also, time to dump Everth? He or Aybar ROS? Thanks!
(Higdldini from NY, NY)
It depends on the format obviously, but if you're talking about a standard mixed probably anywhere from 150-250 depending on what the FA pool looks like. A lot of this discussion revolves around what your replacement will look like. So if you're in a 15-team mixed and you're annoyed at Everth Cabrera and Brandon Crawford is your best option, you just might want to sit tight. But in a 10-team mixed, you might have plenty of options that make sense.

I'd stick with Cabrera over Erick Aybar. Aybar offers some power upside over Cabrera, but he doesn't run the way he used to and I'd rather have Cabrera's 40-45 SB potential. (Mike Gianella)
2013-10-07 18:00:00 (link to chat)Would you rather have Tulo or Hanley next year in fantasy? Also, approximately where would you rank Everth Cabrera for next year, especially compared to guys like Reyes and Segura? Thanks!
(Joe from NYC)
Hey Joe.

I think I'd go with Hanley Ramirez. He earned $26 in 304 ABs to Troy Tulowitzki's $26 in 446 ABs. Even if you don't believe in Hanley maintaining that pace, the move to LA seems to have woken him up. Tulo could be traded, and while he's still a great player, a move to any non-Coors venue is going to have a negative impact. I like Hanley.

Hard to rank Cabrera coming off of his suspension. For all of the talk of how PEDs impact power, there is more of a proven connection to speed/endurance for players using PEDs. Jose Reyes and Jean Segura both have power and Cabrera doesn't. Even in a best case scenario for Cabrera, Reyes and Segura rank ahead of him. (Mike Gianella)
2013-08-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)There is speculation in the Detroit media that the Tigers won't take Peralta back, despite the obvious boost he gives them at shortstop, because of "image" concerns. I think that, if they don't play him and lose at any point, their image is tarnished forever. The Giants got to the WS because of a huge contribution from Melky. What do you think?
(Tigerdog from Orange county CA)
Well, they did trade for Iglalasis.

Tigerdog, hijacking your question to run this. It's official:

Major League Baseball issued the following discipline today for violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program in relation to the Biogenesis investigation. Players receiving 50-game suspensions without pay for their violations of the Program are:

Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Antonio Bastardo;
San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera;
New York Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli;
Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz;
• Padres pitcher Fautino De Los Santos, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A San Antonio Missions of the Texas League;
Houston Astros pitcher Sergio Escalona, who is currently of the roster of the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League;
• Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinez, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the International League;
Seattle Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League;
• Free agent pitcher Jordan Norberto;
Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta;
New York Mets outfielder Cesar Puello, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A Binghamton Mets of the Eastern League; and
• Mets infielder/outfielder Jordany Valdespin, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s of the Pacific Coast League.

Norberto's suspension will be effective immediately once he signs with another Major League organization. All other suspensions are effective immediately. None of the players will appeal their discipline.
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera, Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon and Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal, all of whom already have served 50-game suspensions as a result of their violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program stemming from their connections to Biogenesis, will not receive additional discipline.
Major League Baseball's investigation found no violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program by either Washington Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez or Baltimore Orioles infielder Danny Valencia.

STATEMENT FROM THE TIGERS:
The Detroit Tigers today issued the following statement regarding the suspension of Jhonny Peralta:

"We recognize the suspension of Jhonny Peralta for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program as a measure taken in the best interest of the game. The Detroit Tigers continue to fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from our game. Per the protocol outline by Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, the Tigers' organization will provide no further comment on Peralta's suspension."

STATEMENT FROM PERALTA:
"In spring of 2012, I made a terrible mistake that I deeply regret. I apologize to everyone that I have hurt as a result of my mistake, including my teammates, the Tigers' organization, the great fans in Detroit, Major League Baseball, and my family. I take full responsibility for my actions, have no excuses for my lapse in judgment and I accept my suspension.
I love the fans, my teammates and this organization and my greatest punishment is knowing that I have let so many good people down. I promise to do everything possible to try and earn back the respect that I have lost." (Maury Brown About Biogenesis and Business)
2013-07-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)Is Everth Cabrera officially an above average shortstop now?
(Jeff from Bay Area)
Not official until it's notarized, but I would be comfortable putting him there, especially if you consider how much Petco suppresses offense. On a related note, I'm sad that my dreams of Juan Pierre winning another stolen base title as an old man appear to be dashed.

Bonifacio, and not particularly close. (Bret Sayre)
2013-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat, R.J. Please rank the following infielders by 2013 fantasy upside: Josh Rutledge, Logan Forsythe, Jed Lowrie, Everth Cabrera, Chris Nelson, Adeiny Hechavarria, and Donovan Solano.
(Todd from Oakland)
Hey Todd,

I'm not too good at fantasy (as Marc Normandin can attest) but I'd rank 'em something like:

Lowrie - Hurt often but probably the best hitter of the bunch
Cabrera - Should swipe a ton of bags and he has the positional advantage over Forsythe
Rutledge - Not as good as last year but he can hit and that park will help
Forsythe - Park hurts
Nelson - Park should help
Solano - I think I undersold him last year, but I don't know that I can put him higher
Hechavarria - Not sold that he's a fantasy contributor (R.J. Anderson)
2012-10-04 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on these hitters for next year (for fantasy purposes) - Seagar, Gomez, Frazier, Mayberry, Snider and E. Cabrera?
(Adam from Rochester)
Bullish on Everth Cabrera, as kind of a poor man's Elvis Andrus who won't kill you anywhere but will help big-time with steals at SS. Also like Seager with the Safeco fences being moved in. Not crazy about either Snider or Mayberry, and the rest are somewhere in between. (Daniel Rathman)
2012-07-03 14:00:00 (link to chat)Second base has very few attractive free agents in my 12 team mixed league, as you would expect. Anyone I might be overlooking?
(Alex from Anaheim)
Hmm... Seager, Daniel Murphy? Scutaro seems underowned right now, maybe he's available. Espinosa is just 25% in Yahoo! leagues. Chris Nelson. Everth Cabrera for cheap speed? (Derek Carty)
2012-05-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Everth Cabrera? NL only. Need steals. Worth a pickup? Wait til this legal mess clears up? Thanks
(josh from seattle)
I'd probably just wait unless it's a really deep NL where you can stash and there is literally nothing else of merit on the wire. (Paul Sporer)
2010-12-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mingled joy and pain. Some fans think that last offseason proves Hoyer can build a contending Padre team for 2011. I look at the roughly 60 VORP, plus other losses, and can't see us winning more than 72 games. Any hope for next season other than watching a good front office evaluate its options for the future?
(Geoff Young Fan from San Diego)
I really do think the Padres could contend in 2011 even without Gonzalez, but things have to break very, very right for them. If Wade LeBlanc gets a lot of starts, or they don't sign a solid replacement at first base, or Everth Cabrera can't do anything for them at all, then things have not gone right and they are probably stuck at .500 at best.

The problem is, it's going to be tough to evaluate that until we see who the new shortstop and first baseman are. I'm convinced Cabrera would make a fine second baseman with his strong arm and defensive instincts, so if they can nab a shortstop then they are fine there. None of the pieces the Padres lost from the 2010 season are irreplaceable except for Gonzalez, but losing him doesn't automatically make them a terrible team if they play the rest of their cards right. (Marc Normandin)
2010-10-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which of these guys is most likely break camp as a starter next April - Jerry Hairston, Bonifacio, Bogusevic, Burress or Nady?
(Adam from Rochester)
Jerry Hairston. The Padres are looking to bring him back, and since they aren't sure what to do about Everth Cabrera yet (send him back to Triple-A? Time share?) Hairston very well may end up as the starting shortstop. (Marc Normandin)
2010-02-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)JJ How Ya doing??? Everth Cabrera ?? The Next Furcal ? or just a guy ?
(Jim from Philly)
Cabrera had a nice little season for the Padres last year, particularly for a Rule 5 pick who had never played above High-A. Furcal comes up as one of his PECOTA comps (Jimmy Rollins, Wally Backman, Rafael Furcal and Bip Roberts are the top four in the current weighted means spreadsheet). I'm not convinced Cabrera's got the plate discipline to match Furcal (who's not all that great in that regard) (Jay Jaffe)
2010-01-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Some folks seem to think that Everth Cabrera won't be particularly productive because of his lack of size. He's 5-9. 170. How does his size affect his future as a major leaguer?
(Steve N from Delaware)
I don't buy it for a second, and I don't think his listed size is a handicap to his having a fine career. He's bigger than David Eckstein or Jody Reed or Mike Gallego. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-01-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who will be more valuable this season at SS? Yunel Escobar, Alcides Escobar, or Everth Cabrera?
(Ozzie Smith from HOF)
I wish it would be Everth Cabrera, but it's going to Yunel Escobar. I like Alcides potential quite a bit, but if we're talking 2010 then I'm going with the good Yuni. (Marc Normandin)
2010-01-26 14:00:00 (link to chat)I was talking with some friends about Everth Cabrera. I thought that he looked like he could be very good. They said that he was just too small. (5-9, 170) How important is size in evaluating a players future? (Please, no size jokes.)
(Steve N from Delaware)
I'm not a scout, so I can only go with what I know. But Everth Cabrera is an extremely fun player to watch, he's got great speed, decent contact skills, and will at least get an opportunity to prove himself. All he has to do now is keep his batting average up while playing in Petco. (Tommy Bennett)
2009-10-09 13:30:00 (link to chat)So this Everth Cabrera kid... is he for real?
(Chauncey from SD)
As long as we're agreeing that "real" is a .250-.270 hitter with no power, 40-50 walks, and plus defense, sure. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Some love for KT and his young guys in San Diego? You saw them at 60 wins this year.
(JC from Hoboken)
Yeah, they've played better than I expected them to. They play the park well, finding relief pitchers who can be effective there. Chase Headley has started to come around, and Everth Cabrera isn't that bad. I'm just wondering how many guys responsible for the decent season are good enough to contribute to a real contender. Is Will Venable or Kevin Correia someone you build around? I doubt it. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)"Rule 5 pick Everth Cabrera is a pinch-runner, not a baseball player." Care to revise or extend your remarks?
(JC from Hoboken)
Not really. He's a non-power hitter who strikes out in 20% of his PAs, is living off a .341 BABIP and whose walk rate outside of the #8 slot isn't good. I don't know enough about his defense yet to make a strong statement. He's played well for six weeks. Doesn't change a whole lot. (Joe Sheehan)
