In a 12-team 5x5 mixed, he's droppable for someone like JJ Hardy, Owings, or even Brad Miller, right? If we needed Steals, Villar would actually be an upgrade, right?
(Beam Me Up Scotty from London)		Your logic sounds good to us. We confess to being excellent at finishing 4th in our roto leagues, so we probably aren't the best source of advice for a 5x5 question. We will say that we don't love Cabrera in Scoresheet, and we would definitely prefer the other guys that can post a better OBP and may have some defensive value as well. (Higdldini from NY, NY)		It depends on the format obviously, but if you're talking about a standard mixed probably anywhere from 150-250 depending on what the FA pool looks like. A lot of this discussion revolves around what your replacement will look like. So if you're in a 15-team mixed and you're annoyed at Everth Cabrera and Brandon Crawford is your best option, you just might want to sit tight. But in a 10-team mixed, you might have plenty of options that make sense.

I'd stick with Cabrera over Erick Aybar. Aybar offers some power upside over Cabrera, but he doesn't run the way he used to and I'd rather have Cabrera's 40-45 SB potential. (Mike Gianella)

I think I'd go with Hanley Ramirez. He earned $26 in 304 ABs to Troy Tulowitzki's $26 in 446 ABs. Even if you don't believe in Hanley maintaining that pace, the move to LA seems to have woken him up. Tulo could be traded, and while he's still a great player, a move to any non-Coors venue is going to have a negative impact. I like Hanley.

Hard to rank Cabrera coming off of his suspension. For all of the talk of how PEDs impact power, there is more of a proven connection to speed/endurance for players using PEDs. Jose Reyes and Jean Segura both have power and Cabrera doesn't. Even in a best case scenario for Cabrera, Reyes and Segura rank ahead of him. (Mike Gianella)

I think that, if they don't play him and lose at any point, their image is tarnished forever. The Giants got to the WS because of a huge contribution from Melky. What do you think?

Major League Baseball issued the following discipline today for violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program in relation to the Biogenesis investigation. Players receiving 50-game suspensions without pay for their violations of the Program are:

• Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Antonio Bastardo;
• San Diego Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera;
• New York Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli;
• Texas Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz;
• Padres pitcher Fautino De Los Santos, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A San Antonio Missions of the Texas League;
• Houston Astros pitcher Sergio Escalona, who is currently of the roster of the Double-A Corpus Christi Hooks of the Texas League;
• Yankees outfielder Fernando Martinez, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders of the International League;
• Seattle Mariners catcher Jesus Montero, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers of the Pacific Coast League;
• Free agent pitcher Jordan Norberto;
• Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta;
• New York Mets outfielder Cesar Puello, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A Binghamton Mets of the Eastern League; and
• Mets infielder/outfielder Jordany Valdespin, who is currently on the roster of the Triple-A Las Vegas 51s of the Pacific Coast League.

Norberto's suspension will be effective immediately once he signs with another Major League organization. All other suspensions are effective immediately. None of the players will appeal their discipline.
Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera, Oakland Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon and Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal, all of whom already have served 50-game suspensions as a result of their violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program stemming from their connections to Biogenesis, will not receive additional discipline.
Major League Baseball's investigation found no violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program by either Washington Nationals pitcher Gio Gonzalez or Baltimore Orioles infielder Danny Valencia.

STATEMENT FROM THE TIGERS:
The Detroit Tigers today issued the following statement regarding the suspension of Jhonny Peralta:

"We recognize the suspension of Jhonny Peralta for violating Major League Baseball's Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program as a measure taken in the best interest of the game. The Detroit Tigers continue to fully support Major League Baseball's policy and its efforts to eliminate performance enhancing drugs from our game. Per the protocol outline by Major League Baseball's collective bargaining agreement, the Tigers' organization will provide no further comment on Peralta's suspension."

STATEMENT FROM PERALTA:
"In spring of 2012, I made a terrible mistake that I deeply regret. I'm not too good at fantasy (as Marc Normandin can attest) but I'd rank 'em something like:

Lowrie - Hurt often but probably the best hitter of the bunch
Cabrera - Should swipe a ton of bags and he has the positional advantage over Forsythe
Rutledge - Not as good as last year but he can hit and that park will help
Forsythe - Park hurts
Nelson - Park should help
Solano - I think I undersold him last year, but I don't know that I can put him higher
Hechavarria - Not sold that he's a fantasy contributor (R.J. Anderson)

2010-12-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mingled joy and pain. Some fans think that last offseason proves Hoyer can build a contending Padre team for 2011. I look at the roughly 60 VORP, plus other losses, and can't see us winning more than 72 games. Any hope for next season other than watching a good front office evaluate its options for the future?
(Geoff Young Fan from San Diego)		I really do think the Padres could contend in 2011 even without Gonzalez, but things have to break very, very right for them. If Wade LeBlanc gets a lot of starts, or they don't sign a solid replacement at first base, or Everth Cabrera can't do anything for them at all, then things have not gone right and they are probably stuck at .500 at best.

The problem is, it's going to be tough to evaluate that until we see who the new shortstop and first baseman are. I'm convinced Cabrera would make a fine second baseman with his strong arm and defensive instincts, so if they can nab a shortstop then they are fine there. None of the pieces the Padres lost from the 2010 season are irreplaceable except for Gonzalez, but losing him doesn't automatically make them a terrible team if they play the rest of their cards right. (Jim from Philly)		Cabrera had a nice little season for the Padres last year, particularly for a Rule 5 pick who had never played above High-A. But Everth Cabrera is an extremely fun player to watch, he's got great speed, decent contact skills, and will at least get an opportunity to prove himself. Chase Headley has started to come around, and Everth Cabrera isn't that bad. I'm just wondering how many guys responsible for the decent season are good enough to contribute to a real contender. Is Will Venable or Kevin Correia someone you build around? I doubt it. (Joe Sheehan)

(JC from Hoboken)		Not really. He's a non-power hitter who strikes out in 20% of his PAs, is living off a .341 BABIP and whose walk rate outside of the #8 slot isn't good. I don't know enough about his defense yet to make a strong statement. He's played well for six weeks. Doesn't change a whole lot. (Joe Sheehan)
