YearComment
2013 We're as flummoxed by Burnett as the rest of you. He throws hard enough, but doesn’t strike anybody out. For two seasons, he posted the 5.00 ERA you would expect, but last year did a better job of keeping balls on the ground. So even as his strikeout rate dropped for the second straight season, his results were pretty phenomenal. Burnett led the Twins in relief innings, stranded runners at an above-average rate, and had a sparkling ERA. Obviously, if current trends continue, he’s unlikely to repeat this success, and there is a real danger of the Twins signing him to an unwise contract extension to buy out his arbitration years.
2012 While this hard-throwing, 2005 12th round pick spent most of the year in the Twins' bullpen, and ranked second on the team in appearances—32 of which were less than an inning—the results weren't pretty. Relying on a 92 to 94-mph fastball and a slider, Burnett got swing-and-miss strikes on only 5.4 percent of his pitches, the league's 10th-lowest rate (50 IP minimum). He also walked too many. He was particularly tattooed in his limited chances at medium or high-leverage duty (.298/.389/.491 in 95 PA), which isn't going to help him reach his ceiling as a late-inning reliever. He is certainly young enough to turn things around, but so are a lot of pitchers.
2011 Burnett made the jump from Double-A to the major leagues last season after earning a roster spot in spring training, and experienced some initial success with a fastball that sat at 92 mph and a hard slider. However, when big-league hitters quit chasing the slider out of the strike zone, Burnett became tentative and started throwing fewer strikes. He didn't fare much better after being demoted to Triple-A, which suggests that some additional minor-league learning would not go amiss. Although he lacks closer stuff, he could become a solid set-up man once sufficiently seasoned.
2010 Alex Burnett went from organizational arm to real prospect with a move to the pen, where his fastball/slider combination played up.
2008 The Twins have brought right-hander Alex Burnett along slowly with good results. He's a performance prospect so far and a good one. The Florida State League should be a good test.
