2013-08-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Cardinals are about to sign Kelly Shoppach FYI. The cardinals were supposedly looking for SS but had no luck. Pete Kozma, Ryan Jackson, nor Greg Garcia are the answers so who is?
(Bubba from STL)
I thought Alexei Ramirez made sense for them before the rumors of their interest popped up. It's really hard to find a MLB-quality shortstop out there (which is something that we perhaps don't take into account enough when talking about the Iglesias and Gregorius deals). Maybe they reunite with Brendan Ryan, or Arizona decides to move Cliff Pennington for some reason? I don't know. St. Louis may not have a choice but to roll with what they've got. (R.J. Anderson Trade Deadline Wrap Chat)
2012-03-06 13:00:00 (link to chat)Cliff Pennington a top 10 AL SS?
(Abe Froman from Chicago)
Well, there are only 14 starting SSs in the AL, and some that aren't very good, so yeah, Pennington is 9 or 10. (Derek Carty)
2011-07-13 12:30:00 (link to chat)With the A's season is over, what offensive players should be brought back? The only ones I definitely bring back are Jemile Weeks and Scott Sizemore.
(Tom from Madison)
Well, Kurt Suzuki isn't going anywhere, Chris Carter will be worth playing, and maybe Daric Barton will have hit his way back to the majors by then. Other than that--I was going to say Cliff Pennington (who was actually Oakland's most valuable player last season, according to WARP), though it would be better if the A's could arrange to bring back his glove and substitute someone else's bat. However, I've just noticed that FRAA seems to hate him this season as much as it loved him in 2010. Anyone noticed any big change in Pennington's play in the field? (Ben Lindbergh)
2010-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)True or false: This season, Derek Jeter is Cliff Pennington with a worse glove?
(Eric from Denver)
I just really, really wanted to see this in print. (Marc Normandin)
2010-09-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)True or false: This season, Derek Jeter is Cliff Pennington with a worse glove? ================== Should have read: This season, Derek Jeter is *Chad* Pennington with a better arm?
(dianagramr from NYC)
A winner is you. (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)How good or bad should A's fans feel about Cliff Pennington at short in 2010?
(Ryan from Utica)
OK, a more substantive A's question. ;) I'm happy to see Pennington get a chance, because it's clear he doesn't have much left to learn in Sacramento, but guess I worry about what it'll mean for the A's pitching staff, given that the expectation's always been that he makes a better second baseman than a shortstop. His arm's pretty good, but scouty comments about his range don't jibe with some of the statistical metrics (Plus/Minus in particular). Still, it isn't like we're talking about Luis Hernandez. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-02-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)With the AL West appearing so winnable, can the A's really afford to give Bobby "Bones" Crosby a season's worth of at-bats? And what better options are still out there (either in-house or via FA) besides the obvious one in Orlando Cabrera?
(Adam from Italy)
It really does seem to be down to Cabrera, especially since so many of the Kathy Griffin D-listers (I'm looking at you, Adam Everett) are already under contract. But I guess I'm a little more sanguine, in that I'd be willing to risk Cliff Pennington for long stretches. The problem's more one of the additional questions over Eric Chavez's playability and availability, and how well Mark Ellis bounces back from his latest spin with the injury bug, because that's an entire infield's worth of unknowns that no amount of happy thoughts get to go away.
