DateQuestionAnswer
2012-06-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Picture this: Dickey deserves to make (and possibly start) the ASG. However, none of the presumed NL all-star catchers have experience catching a knuckler. Dickey lobbies to have Josh Thole added to roster as his "personal catcher". Request is turned down because now ... "the game counts" and Thole is not worthy of a spot on the roster. Comments?
(dianagram from VORGville)
Personally, I want Zack Greinke to start the All-Star Game just because it's in Kansas City. Others, like Dickey, are more likely candidates though.

As for the scenario, it's interesting. I can see it being a possibility, complete with Thole not making it. And I wouldn't be too saddened by it. Catchers may not be used to catching the knuckler, but I bet they can if necessary (especially for 2 innings). the more important consideration, though, is what La Russa thinks about catchers catching the knuckler. I bet he'd be happy to give Yadier Molina that chance. If Brian McCann is the starter though, he might think differently... (Larry Granillo)
2012-05-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Josh Thole is off to a blistering start. Is there any chance that he will add power to his game?
(Steve N from Delaware)
No, I don't see it. Power is reputed to be the last tool to develop (though I tend to vote for either "wisdom" or "perspicacity"), but Thole's already 25 and nobody has ever projected him to hit for power. If he goes deep ten times this year, drop me a line and I'll send you a prize, so long as I can find a shipping box that can hold perspicacity. (Ken Funck)
2011-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)I have the following four catchers in a 16 team Strat-O-Matic league where you can keep a guy forever if you like. Which do you like long term: Chris Iannetta, Ryan Hanigan, Josh Thole, Jason Castro? I'd love to have a stronger catcher, but that's not a possibility until next year's draft.
(jhardman from Strat-O-Matic land)
Unfortunately I haven't had the opportunity to play a strat-o-matic league before, so I'm not sure how all the specifics work, like how catcher defense is factored in. Hitting wise in regular roto terms, I like Iannetta the best. (Derek Carty)
2010-03-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Two pitching questions: 1) What are the chances of Bumgarner finding that missing velocity? 2) Jenrry Mejia, 8th inning or Triple A? And Happy St Pat's
(Jquinton82 from NY)
Happy St. Pat's to you too, especially when it's such a gloriously beautiful day (here in Chicago, at least). I think Bumgarner's going to be fine, and would refer you to some of the things Kevin Goldstein has said about how, last year, he'd been allowed to throw too much between games, and that was the problem. I'd love to see Mejia stick around, in part because he'd be another guy to count among those story-changing youngsters that the organization does have almost ready. However, like Josh Thole, I can see taking their time and easing him in later on this season. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)Are you a believer in Josh Thole? He cant be worse than Schneider and Santos, right?
(brian from Brooklyn NY)
If that's your litmus test in me believing in him, then yet. Not a great defender, but can hit. Best comp I've heard from a scout is Darrin Fletcher. (Kevin Goldstein)
