2011 Brandon Erbe paid the ultimate price for his helter-skelter mechanics when he underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum in August. Despite a good fastball, Erbe was always a long-shot due to a delivery conceived by Picasso. Post-surgery, his chance has gone from a “Hail Mary” to that of a snowball in hell.
2010 The live-armed Erbe's fastball usually runs at 91-94 mph and can occasionally reach 96. He's got a hard slider which rates plus, and he's improved his changeup to average. What he absolutely cannot do is pitch from the stretch: his empty/runners-on split in the minors has been about the same as the difference between Alexei Ramirez and Manny Ramirez, a .259/.334 chasm that has held him back. There's also been talk of switching him to relief for his entire career, because he's got a complex, unrepeatable delivery, a history of arm trouble, much better heat than off-speed stuff—but he's still a starter for now.
2009 The optimistic will look at Erbe's repeat of the Carolina League and see improvement across the board, a pitcher who's still pretty young, and one who has a strong fastball and a plus slider. The less charitable will point out that it still doesn't rate as a good performance, the fastball is rated 3-4 mph lower than a couple of years ago, the home runs are way too frequent, and there's no third pitch. That's a description of a guy who should be shifting to the bullpen.
2008 Youth is still on Erbe's side, but 2007 was a terrible year for Baltimore's 2005 third-round pick. His control deserted him, which is not the most surprising thing given that he's a tall, skinny kid who's still growing. His fastball was still reaching the upper 90s, so he hasn't lost any velocity, his slider bites (and we mean that in a good way) and his changeup is decent, but he was always behind in the count and hitters sat and waited.
2007 Erbe, like third baseman Billy Rowell last year, was just 17 when he was drafted, giving the generally over-age Birds a pair of extremely young and talented prospects. The slightly-built Erbe throws in the mid- to upper-90s and was kept on a tight leash all season as the O`s want to bring him along slowly, to allow him to work on his pitches and command and polish up his delivery. Above all, they want to keep him healthy. Erbe`s biggest challenge might be learning to work from the stretch; he was far less effective with men on.
2006 Yes, it was a great start to a career, and the strikeouts were especially eye-popping. It`s still just the Appalachian League, and it was only 23 innings, and he`s only a 17-year-old kid, albeit one with a 97-mph fastball. With that kind of arm, you only worry about whether he can stay healthy and whether he can maintain control, which can often amount to the same thing: good mechanics means better control and less arm strain, while control also means fewer pitches and less chance of overuse-related injuries.
