As much as we've railed on them (myself included), they're four games over .500! They're probably not catching the Twins, but that's more about how good Minnesota's been. I don't know that supplementing with useful retreads like Adam Jones or even taking a flier on Derek Dietrich stops them from being behind Minnesota, but they'd be closer, right? Long term, you mean, they have to execute what they've done in the past to compete. They were in the World Series in very recent memory! I don't think that they are unwilling to spend and I actually don't really doubt that the Dolans have operated at a loss some years because of Cleveland's market and size. I just think they should be willing to run it at a loss because, as Rob Mains has argued, it's not a normal business or investment. It's fine to run losses and then sell the team for a massive profit down the line. (Craig Goldstein)

Peralta is safe and after that it probably hurts everyone at least a little. Add them to Cruz, Benintendi, Brantley, Sano (Bryant already is at thrid), Inciarte, and Adam Jones and I have a crowded OF. We only have 3 OF spots. I've been trying to move some OF for pitching but am getting impatient. Do you think Pillar and Altherr are legit and I should look at trading one of my studs? Or should I keep trying to sell high on these two? Should we adjust our expectations for the rest of the season on any of these guys or just write it off to a small sample size in some cold weather? Jones' health concerns me a little bit: not because he's seriously hurt, but because he was banged up a lot last year and this tends to start repeating for players his age. Freeman worries me; I wonder if maybe there's a more serious injury lurking and the Braves would shut him down in July if they're out of contention. Heyward is a notorious slow starter. (Ryan from Texas)	First things first, I have to ascertain what Peter Angelos is going to be willing to do for me. The Orioles have three years before they lose Manny Machado, and nothing like a championship core around him at the moment. I'm either going to get wild and crazy and surround Machado and Adam Jones with a team I think can realistically win the AL East pronto, or tearing the thing down to the studs. The wiser course is the latter, I think, but it's hard to find as good a franchise-starter as Machado. I wouldn't want to waste that, either. (Nick from Dallas)	For me, they're pretty different players, especially from a fantasy sense. Jones has been a very consistent .280-ish hitter the last half-decade or so and Brinson, even with the improvements in his hit tool, doesn't project to do that at the major league level. Even outside the average, I think Brinson's fantasy value sits more on the speed side than the power side right now, unlike Jones, who is the opposite. That said, the upside is a fantasy stud, no matter how that value breaks out. (Bret Sayre)

He's swinging and missing a ton, largely because he has trouble identifying average to plus break. Schoop has the plate discipline of an Adam Jones, but the lightning bat speed and plus raw power are excellent. His defense has solidified the middle for Baltimore, as Hardy and Schoop have been terrific. I think Schoop is a second division 2B down the road, and is largely the same type of player moving forward with 20+ HR potential but a low OBP and solid defense. (Tucker Blair)

His defense is otherworldy, but the bat is really underrated. I think some forget how young he is. Barring anything unforeseen, Machado is going to have a few .300 25+ HR seasons in the works. Adams is clearly the better hitter right now, but it's not like Oscar Taveras doesn't have a track record of being the best hitter in the minor leagues or anything. Since when did Cardinals fans decide to turn on top prospects so quickly? I thought you were supposed to be the best fans in baseball? This is a very Cubs thing to do. I like Matt Adams for what he is. He's a very good hitter, but he offers no defensive or base running value. He's also a big-bodied hitter, and we know those don't age well. The history is not kind for big hitters as they enter their 30's. Look at Ryan Howard, Prince Fielder, etc. The list goes on and on. He's got plenty of time before that, but if we're looking at the long-term picture, it's not close between the 22-year-old outfielder with a 7 hit tool and a strong minor league track record and the slow-footed first baseman who is probably enjoying his career year and has maybe 3 years of his prime left in front of him. Also, has anyone noticed that Matt Adams has 9 walks this season? 9!?! That's less than Adam Jones! If he isn't hitting .330 he's making a TON of outs. Regression is going to be rough in St. Louis. I think there's some shock value because you traded young for old (excepting Jones) but, speaking from my experiences, prospects get overvalued in keeper leagues. I think that deal is "fair" in that you are getting more talent back for this year, but even in a Roto league I would be given pause at dealing Baez in a deal like this without getting more back. I can usually pull a 2-for-1 or at least a 1.5-1 (MLB players for the farm player) for a quality prospect like Baez. The tough thing is that a full year of stat's from a MLB player like Kolten Wong isn't something to dismiss lightly. But Wong isn't an elite like the other hitters you're getting. And the more I look at this the more I don't like it. Jones/Giancarlo Stanton are better than Jose Bautista/Hunter Pence but not by a wide margin. I'd hold here. (Mike Gianella)

He is also swinging at fewer pitches overall, which suggest a change of approach. He could be sitting dead-red on certain pitches early in the count and laying off anything that does not fit a certain profile until he gets two strikes, and perhaps he has picked up no a particular trend that pitchers had established against him. This is another area where batters who do their homework can reap an advantage. As Crash Davis said, "If this guy starts me off with the breaking ball ... Frustrated with Detroit for giving up on Sizemore a month ago or so, I traded Boesch - who wasn't hitting at all and looking like his 2nd half of not hitting last year and Sizemore for Mark Ellis. A few days after the trade Ellis hit the DL, Boesch went on a tear, and Sizemore was traded to Oakland where he was better appreciated. Recently, I almost offered Jennings for Kipnis, but decided not to mess up my team any further. Meanwhile, Ellis came alive in Oakland for a bit and now my Carlos Guillen is up and seemingly pretty acceptable. I still have Granderson, Adam Jones, Melky, Delmon, and Trout for outfielders - not to mention one Jose Bautista, if I didn't need him at first until Butler starts hitting again. Should I make that deal anyway on the assumption Guillen and Ellis will be injured again - or is Jennings' upside too great? (We can keep 13 non-prospects at the end of the season.) (Dan from Maryland)	This has been pretty much a lost year, as just about all of the key youngsters on whom the Orioles' future hinges has taken a step backwards - Adam Jones, Matt Wieters, Brian Matusz, Chris Tillman... In retrospect, I think the team waited too long to pull the plug on Dave Trembley, because the situation has just festered, but keep in mind the Orioles' poor standing also has to do with the fact that the other four teams in the division are especially strong; the O's are 8-25 (.242) against them, which is worse than the 1962 Mets' pace. In terms of contention, I think a lot depends upon whom they hire as a manager. Buck Showalter might be able to get them playing respectable baseball by sometime next year, but contention will take some front office smarts, and I'm not sure the guy who signed Garrett Atkins need apply. For Jones, he's swinging at all types of pitches out of the zone-- 41%. For comparison, the league average is around 25% and Jeff Francoeur is at 43%. So, Jones needs to work on pitch recognition because he's not swinging that much overall. I don't know if demoting him to recognize inferior pitches builds him up to recognizing MLB quality pitches. Still, Matt Wieters is making progress, as is Brian Matusz, and Chris Tillman appears to be coming around at Triple-A. Just remember that a turnaround for an organization with such a back history of losing takes time, and probably a change at the helm -- I'd have bet that Dave Trembley would get the axe before Trey Hillman, and I doubt he'll be around for much longer. Jones has just two years in the majors under his belt, but he isn't even 25 yet. I'd be reluctant to infer there's something he can't do, given that we're dealing with fragments of seasons, and differing measures of health. When in doubt, I refer to the master; Earl Weaver usually gave a guy 20 at-bats against a pitcher before he judged him, and in point of fact Jones has yet to face any single lefty 20 times. I can't believe once the Twins decided they "had" to move him, that that's all they got. I agree with people who say - take Adam Jones straight up (other than maybe the psychological impact of making him the "1" to pair up for comparison). It seems like the Dodgers could have given them something better if they really wanted to switch leagues... It really feels like they just decided - "Hey, we can say we took the best of Team X's farm system. Combined with ours, we're in good shape." But it ignores the fact that Team X has a weak system. Most teams are trying to get the money from fans who know major leaguers, and while the top of the pyramid knows that there's a difference between Adam Jones and Carlos Gomez, the average fan doesn't. So getting four guys is a better sell. To answer the actual question...no. Teams are savvy enough to evaluate prospects on their merits, and not in the context of a specific farm system. The Mariners would get Bedard for two years, while the Expos only had him for three months before they had to send him packing. It's a bad deal for Seattle, but not that bad. Baltimore will not compete in 2008 nor 2009 and the team probably can't sign Erik Bedard to an extension anyway. Kevin Goldstein is very high on Adam Jones and Chris Tillman. I do not get the George Sherrill-part of the trade, but maybe the O's are going to trade him right away (to the Braves for Brent Lillibridge?). But to add in a pitcher who I think might become a top 20 prospect next year, and a kid that really reached historic levels by hitting in High-A last year, this trade becomes lopsided quickly.
