2013-05-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which former Rays outfield prospect will have the better year? BJ Upton, Josh Hamilton, Delmon Young, or Rocco Baldelli?
(Tim from NYC)
Elijah Dukes. (Paul Sporer)
2012-03-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)NL-only, limited keeper, OPS instead of BA. The following 1b are kept: Sanchez, Berkman, Belt, Votto, Freeman, Posey, Morse. What guy should I target out of the scrap heap that's left? Should I pay overvalue for one of the few decent guys left to make sure I don't end up with James F. Loney?
(batts40 from IL)
Oh joy of joys, the smoke detector in my room is going off. Who let Elijah Dukes in here?

You're talking to the wrong guy - I like Loney out of what is left in your league unless the Ike Davis story doesn't scare you. A 100% healthy Ike Davis would be the guy to get (Jason Collette)
2011-11-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Why are people touting John Jaso as a Carlos Ruiz-esque catcher and already declaring the Mariners the winner in the Lueke/Jaso trade? Lueke's good K/9 and solid BB/9 numbers to go with his decent FIP make it seem like he'll be good RP with right defense behind him. Character issues are the only concern and Rays have had their fair share of questionable people in past. Jaso is a horrible defender(shoulder surgery in the middle levels of his minor league career) and while his BABIP makes one believe he'll rebound from bad 2011, good bet that he won't return to 2010 levels either.
(jlarsen from Chicago)
The Mariners win the deal simply because they get rid of the rapey reliever. Seriously, there's never been a player I've more rooted for a career-ending injury than Lueke. As for the comparisons to assholes like Willy Aybar and Elijah Dukes, I recall that those guys were Rays properties before their major transgressions came to light, so it's a different story in terms of how they were handled by the org. I don't think they went out of their way to acquire either knowing as much as they know about Lueke.

Jaso has some offensive ability for a catcher, but I think we've pretty much seen the spectrum of his 90th and 10th percentiles. He can be a decent bat for the position, albeit with sketchy defensive ability. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-02-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)There seems to be something missing from the Elijah Dukes story. Guys is still young enough, the skills/tools are immense (ceiling seems higher than say Lastings Milledge). Besides smoking a little reefer and the odd lover's quarrel what did he do to fully poison the well? I mean Milton Bradley is still in the league (nominally).?
(WilliamWilde from Boston)
If bad makeup were a tool, Dukes would be an 80 for sure. Absolutely worse than Bradley. Here's hoping him the best of luck in his incipient rap career. (Tommy Bennett)
2010-03-26 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see any free agents with solid fantasy value out there? Jermaine Dye, Elijah Dukes, Pedro, am I forgetting somebody?
(dangor from New York)
John Smoltz, at least as a reliever, is somebody who can help if he's so inclined, though I guess he's content to go the broadcast route for the moment. A healthy Jarrod Washburn can certainly sponge up a useful number of innings. David Weathers is a handy reliever to have around even at his age. Carlos Delgado might still have something left once he recovers from hip surgery. Gary Sheffield is still a badass who can be a useful bench bat if so inclined, and Joe Crede can pick it at the hot corner if his back is right. (Jay Jaffe)
2010-03-18 14:00:00 (link to chat)Hi John ... thanks for the chat ... 1) Which team would be the best fit for the nomadic, enigmatic Elijah Dukes? 1a) Which team will actually sign him?
(dianagramr from NYC)
That's a great question. There is no question he is talented. There is no question he is troubled. I wonder if the Mets might not take a shot on him. I think Jerry Manuel would be the right guy to manage Dukes with his patient and positive approach. (John Perrotto)
2010-02-25 15:00:00 (link to chat)What do you foresee the future holding for two enigmas - Elijah Dukes and Lastings Milledge?
(BallparkFan from Phoenix)
Dukes is his own worst enemy and I fear his career is not going to end on good terms. Milledge, on the other hand, seems to have started the game seriously since being traded to Pittsburgh last summer and I think _ and PECOTA does, too _ that he is on the verge of a breakout season. (John Perrotto)
2010-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mark- BP is my bible and I took your rankings last year as the Gospel of Marc. After throwing away a keeper slot on Lastings Milledge and trading for David Wright, I picked Corey Hart, Elijah Dukes, Nalasco, Matt Weiters and several other disappointments. Needless to say it wasn't a great season for me. Why should I be more believing this year? Help me restore my faith. Thanks, Dan ps feel free to answer this privately if you felt it came across too critical.
(dandaman from Sea Cliff)
Nope, this is exactly why I did that review of my rankings, because I felt like you. It seemed like I drafted every major mistake I made, so I wanted to learn from my mistakes to keep it from happening again. I think the 2010 rankings will be better for it. (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)Elijah Dukes confounds scouting and statistical analysis. Can you spot what he'll do this coming season in your crystal ball?
(Scoresheetwiz from the big city on Lake Ontario)
Not wind up on the Cubs, although they could use him. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-09-24 14:00:00 (link to chat)Is Elijah Dukes still an unresolved question? Do the Nats have any better choice than playing him next year?
(XXpo from DC)
I'd like to see him get one year as the everyday RF to answer that question, because I honestly don't know. He never seems to be the same player in consecutive seasons. It's frustrating. The Nationals need upside, and he has enough to warrant the job. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-08-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thoughts on Elijah Dukes for the second half of this season? I watched the game last night and he hit the ball hard, saw like a thousand pitches, and looked generally like the Dukes of second half of 2008.
(Charlie from Bethesda)
Must be because I dropped him in my league! If he's once again patient and hitting the ball hard, then there's no reason not to like him--hell, I liked him a lot at the beginning of the season for those same reasons--but I would like to see him replicate that a bit before I make room on my roster for him (again). (Marc Normandin)
2009-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)How real are the Giants?
(beta461 from SF)
Very. It's easier to find offensive help than get a pitching staff you're comfortable with. I'm interested in seeing which direction they take this. See if Brandon Wood could be a latter-day Matt Williams? Get Elijah Dukes in time for Jeff Leonard Bat Day? Audition the most foul-mouthed first basemen who are active to get themselves a Will Clark flashback? Beats me, but they really need to do something and take that shot at the NL Wild Card seriously. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who would you rather have for the long term: Elijah Dukes or Adam Jones?
(mike from maryland)
Adam Jones, for being a bit younger, a true center fielder, and a bit less risky in non-baseball areas. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-10 16:30:00 (link to chat)Austin Kearns over Elijah Dukes or Josh Willingham? What is Manny Acta/Mike Rizzo thinking?
(dwiest12 from NoVA)
I think Marc hit the nail on the head today in his piece; economic factors and a need to see if there really is a sucker born every minute, and how relentless population pressures might necessarily put one in a GM job somewhere, so that said sucker might go all Bowden on the notion of employing Austin Kearns... it's not the best gig for a busker on the make, but you can't blame the Nats for trying. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Elijah Dukes, Lastings Milledge, Ryan Zimmerman, Adam Dunn et al. Some of those Nats are worth drafting this season. What about my Pirates.....
(mhixpgh from Pittsburgh)
Well uh, you've got...um...that guy...you know...Oh! It's Nate McLouth, Ryan Doumit, and maybe Adam LaRoche. I wouldn't touch your rotation with someone else's roster though. (Marc Normandin)
2009-01-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Who's better Felix Pie or Elijah Dukes this year??
(Hawkeye from Grafton, ND)
Sticking with the Pie-man theme... amid his injuries, Dukes certainly showed he could hit major league pitching last year, and in a tough offensive environment. He gets the nod for the moment. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Speaking of the Nats - what's your best guess about Elijah Dukes 2009?
(HL from Rockville, MD)
Flip a coin. I think he could become a star but, sadly, he is his own worst enemy and could possibly implode at any time. (John Perrotto)
2008-10-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you think will be the better player in two years, Ryan Zimmerman or Elijah Dukes?
(Scott from DC )
Zimmerman. He's a year younger, has a more refined approach at the plate, much greater defensive value, and no known makeup issues.

That's not to say that Dukes didn't make some pretty impressive strides this year. He's got a lot to live down, but so far as I recall he didn't add to his woes this year. I liked Bowden's gamble on him at the time, and I like it even more now. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-10-06 14:00:00 (link to chat)When will Bowden be fired? Why hasn't it happened already?
(Robert from DC)
Lastings Milledge and Elijah Dukes. That's a better year than a whole lot of people had.

Lightning round. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-09-09 13:30:00 (link to chat)So after starting out 1 for 32 this year, Elijah Dukes is hitting .300/.400/.540. Do you think he can be a legitimate star, assuming he keeps behaving himself?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Yes, I do. He has tremendous raw talent and a very good idea of what he's doing at the plate and in the field. Setting aside all non-baseball issues, I'm not sure who I'd take between Dukes and Lastings Milledge. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-09-08 13:00:00 (link to chat)Since starting out this season 1-32, Elijah Dukes has hit .305/.402/.540. Is he going to be a superstar?
(Charlie from Bethesda, MD)
Has the problem with Dukes ever been his ability? I don't think he quite turns into Albert Belle if he gets his life in order, but it's pretty hard to have a career if you don't. (Derek Jacques)
2008-06-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)Hear about Matt Garza seeing a renowned sports psychologist? Do you think he's as "excitable" as Carlos Zambrano or did the Rays just replace one hot-head(Dukes or Delmon, take your pick) for another?
(jlarsen from DRays Bay)
Yeah, I read that. I don't think he is in Elijah Dukes' class (I mean who is? Not even Milton Bradley) or will do something as dumb as Delmon Young did in Class AAA. I'd say he's "excitable" like the Big Z. (John Perrotto)
2008-06-17 15:00:00 (link to chat)Enough chatter about those teams hogging the top 10. What about my beloved Nationals? Is this the worst hitting lineup in recent times? Also, on the Dave Duncan theme, I think Randy St. Clair is underappreciated for getting decent pitching out of a staff of 89 mph retreads and kids.
(macman from dc)
Whew, 2:30 into this I think I've blown past my pitch count and am into a Category V start. This question and one more....

Good point about St. Clair and the Nats, particularly their rotation. If Shawn Hill could remain healthy it would be even more impressive.

As bad as the lineup's hitting has been, it's fundamentally not as awful as, say, the Mariners'. Injuries have taken their toll, limiting Nick Johnson and Ryan Zimmerman or knocking them out of action for extended periods. The important thing is that there's a lot more upside here than a place like Seattle. Lastings Milledge, Elijah Dukes and Wily Mo Pena may not live up to they hype, but I'd rather see what they can do than watching the death throes of Richie Sexson's career and the half-dozen battles to get OBPs over .300 in that lineup. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-03-17 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is it ever a good idea to just pack it in from day 1 and start building for next year? In my (very competitive) NL-only standard 5x5 keeper, I had a terrible, terrible auction. I had a full $30 leftover, my best starting pitcher is probably Shawn Hill, my only hitters of note are D. Lee, Zimmerman, and Franceour, and 4 of my 6 outfield+util spots are guys who probably won't start (Rajai Davis, Nyjer Morgan, Felix Pie, and Elijah Dukes). Oh, and the closest thing I have to a closer is either Bob Howry or Tony Pena. If you were me, would you take up the challenge of trying to compete this year through trades and fa, or just shoot for '09?
(Ameer from Bloomington, IN)
Ameer,

I could never pack it in on the first day or first half in a season. One time I got done in by dial up in a crappy hotel room in Florida for a draft. Honestly part of the fun was digging my way out of the mess the auto pick dealt me. Give it the first half and embrace the challenge. After the first half is over then evaluate and decide if it's time to look to 09'. (Mike Siano)
2008-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)do you think Elijah Dukes can get his head screwed on strait and have a breakout season in 08?
(tycobb from ga)
Here's another one I'll double up on. We're soon entering the lightning round... (Derek Jacques)
2008-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)"MLB and its fans are pretty tolerant of off-field legal issues, and spousal abuse in particular. It's a stark difference to the moralizing we do about PEDs." Not so much, some Rays fans are already comparing Aybar to Elijah Dukes. Guess the "good character" players code allegedly set by the Rays FO is thrown out the window, huh?
(jlarsen from DRays Bay)
Dukes played for Licey early in their winter league season, and his temper issues seem to still be in full effect, so I'm not sure if he can get his head screwed on straight. So long as you can hit, you get lots of chances to show that you can get your stuff together in the majors--but you have to make some effort to reform. Dunno that Dukes has it in him.

The Rays need to weigh their good character code against the fact that players with problems are often available at a discount--like dinged-up soup cans in a supermarket. It'll be interesting to see what they do when (and if) Aybar gets past his legal troubles. (Derek Jacques)
2008-01-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Wily Mo Pena or Elijah Dukes?
(doog7642 from Blaine, MN)
Dukes, and not just because it's the sort of thing that makes people wonder why karma isn't a bitch in his case. He's simply younger and more talented, and I think the Nats are being proactive in helping him get straightened out and have a real career. (Christina Kahrl)
