Lueke's good K/9 and solid BB/9 numbers to go with his decent FIP make it seem like he'll be good RP with right defense behind him. Character issues are the only concern and Rays have had their fair share of questionable people in past. Jaso is a horrible defender(shoulder surgery in the middle levels of his minor league career) and while his BABIP makes one believe he'll rebound from bad 2011, good bet that he won't return to 2010 levels either. (jlarsen from Chicago) | The Mariners win the deal simply because they get rid of the rapey reliever. Seriously, there's never been a player I've more rooted for a career-ending injury than Lueke. As for the comparisons to assholes like Willy Aybar and Elijah Dukes, I recall that those guys were Rays properties before their major transgressions came to light, so it's a different story in terms of how they were handled by the org. I don't think they went out of their way to acquire either knowing as much as they know about Lueke.
Jaso has some offensive ability for a catcher, but I think we've pretty much seen the spectrum of his 90th and 10th percentiles. He can be a decent bat for the position, albeit with sketchy defensive ability. (Jay Jaffe) |

Good point about St. Clair and the Nats, particularly their rotation. If Shawn Hill could remain healthy it would be even more impressive. As bad as the lineup's hitting has been, it's fundamentally not as awful as, say, the Mariners'. Injuries have taken their toll, limiting Nick Johnson and Ryan Zimmerman or knocking them out of action for extended periods. The important thing is that there's a lot more upside here than a place like Seattle. Lastings Milledge, Elijah Dukes and Wily Mo Pena may not live up to they hype, but I'd rather see what they can do than watching the death throes of Richie Sexson's career and the half-dozen battles to get OBPs over .300 in that lineup. In my (very competitive) NL-only standard 5x5 keeper, I had a terrible, terrible auction. I had a full $30 leftover, my best starting pitcher is probably Shawn Hill, my only hitters of note are D. Lee, Zimmerman, and Franceour, and 4 of my 6 outfield+util spots are guys who probably won't start (Rajai Davis, Nyjer Morgan, Felix Pie, and Elijah Dukes). Oh, and the closest thing I have to a closer is either Bob Howry or Tony Pena.

I could never pack it in on the first day or first half in a season. One time I got done in by dial up in a crappy hotel room in Florida for a draft. Honestly part of the fun was digging my way out of the mess the auto pick dealt me. Give it the first half and embrace the challenge. Not so much, some Rays fans are already comparing Aybar to Elijah Dukes. Guess the "good character" players code allegedly set by the Rays FO is thrown out the window, huh? (jlarsen from DRays Bay) | Dukes played for Licey early in their winter league season, and his temper issues seem to still be in full effect, so I'm not sure if he can get his head screwed on straight. So long as you can hit, you get lots of chances to show that you can get your stuff together in the majors--but you have to make some effort to reform. Dunno that Dukes has it in him.
The Rays need to weigh their good character code against the fact that players with problems are often available at a discount--like dinged-up soup cans in a supermarket. It'll be interesting to see what they do when (and if) Aybar gets past his legal troubles. (Derek Jacques) |
