2008 Signed on the cheap, Fultz was assigned the job of getting left-handers out, and he did it well, depending mostly on his fastball/changeup combination. The Indians were happy to pick up his cheap 2008 option, as chances are he'll do it again.
2007 If Fultz pitched on a team with a well-stocked bullpen, he`d be a situational lefty and have an ERA about a run lower. Reserving him for his best matchups was a luxury the lackluster Philly pen didn`t have last year, so Fultz was merely alright, reversing his BABIP luck from the year before. The free agent took his arm to Cleveland, where he`ll try to shore up a bullpen that ranked among the majors` worst in WXRL last year.
2006 Throws an average-plus sinker, cutter, and curve, an average-minus slider, and a plus turned-over change. Fultz`s repertoire should have produced far greater success than it did before 2005. Some of his struggles were due to a bruised shoulder he suffered in Texas in 2003, and it could be that his career year was simply the apotheosis of a veteran pitcher losing his sharpness for two seasons. With much improved control, Fultz allowed an astonishingly low hit rate and less than a runner per inning, retiring both lefties and righties with aplomb. While he`ll regress toward the mean in 2006 as surely as South Philly cheesesteaks will clog arteries, Fultz has probably reached a level where he can contribute as a setup pitcher and not just as a situational lefty.
2005 Despite never posting an ERA under 4.50 in any of his five big league seasons, Fultz is now pretty well established on the LOOGY gravy train, which is a better thing than it sounds. Your basic moderately serviceable second lefty, he was snagged off waivers by the Phillies.
2004 OK, maybe the Ranger pitching staff is jinxed. Even when the team makes a decent pitching acquisition, something goes freakishly wrong. Fultz was one of the best left-handed relievers in the majors for the first half of the season, but then he hurt his shoulder by running into the outfield wall shagging flies in batting practice, and he was never the same after that. He'll be a solid situational lefty again in 2004; Fultz's .218/.289/.311 against left-handed batters was one of the better lines in the AL in 2003, and it wasn't out of line with what he's done the rest of his career.
2003 Don’t read too much into Fultz’s 2002 decline. Yes, he was genuinely awful at the beginning of the year before being sent down, but that stretch covered only 34 innings. He pitched very well in Fresno after the demotion, and was terrific in September after being called back up to the Giants. Chances are he’ll regain his 2000–2001 form and be a reliable situational lefty again in 2003. Signed with Texas, where lefty relievers go to die.
2002 Unlike many pitchers who are shoehorned into the job, Fultz is a situational lefty who actually is suited for the role. He's not real effective against right-handed batters, is effective pitching back-to-back days, and tires pretty quickly.
2001 Aaron Fultz rocks. He's a left-hander with decent stuff who gets a lot of ground balls and occasionally leaves an 87-mph pitch in the middle of the plate at approximately mid-thigh. The result is extremely entertaining baseball. You may get to watch the defense make a graceful play, see Fultz strike out someone by getting them off balance, or gaze in awe as Brian Giles hits a pitch at 185 mph into dead center field.
2000 The Giants liked what they saw of Fultz last season, adding him to the 40-man roster in October. It's easy to see what they liked: a left-handed starter/reliever who struck out 151 in 137 innings in Triple-A. If he has just one good season in middle relief for a major-league team, he'll play in the bigs for a decade. Of course, he may never get that chance.
1999 Former starter, converted to the bullpen a couple of years ago. Fultz has decent control, but hasn't shown enough of anything else to suggest he'll ever be more than a mop-up man in the majors.
1997 Strikes out enough guys to be successful, and walks enough not to be. Something has to give, but it probably won’t happen for a couple of years. Will start and spend the season in AA.
