YearComment
2006 Boston traded Perez and pitcher Kyle Bono to the D-Backs in exchange for about ten minutes of Jose Cruz, Jr. Arizona didn`t have many middle infielders with any plate discipline to speak of, so Perez is a welcome addition. He doesn`t generate a whole lot of oomph with his bat, and was demoted from Triple-A Pawtucket all the way down to High-A Lancaster after changing organizations. Perez moved from shortstop to second base, so watch out for budding signs of the "utility" label.
2005 How many shortstops are too many? With Edgar Renteria in place in Boston, the continued rise of Hanley Ramirez and the drafting of Pedroia, Perez's status has taken a big hit in the past year. He's more athlete than ballplayer and while the Sox do love his physical tools, he still hasn't developed the power or patience required to be a serious prospect. He's still young and held his own in Portland this year, but the Sox moved him to second when Ramirez arrived. With all the talent in front of him and young but talented players like Christian Lara and Luis Soto coming up behind him, his future is with another organization.
