DateQuestionAnswer
2011-04-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)How much of a problem is it for the Orioles to lose Matusz and Hardy to the disabled list?
(TGisriel from Baltimore)
Given that Matusz's injury gave the Orioles an excuse to call up Zach Britton, not a huge one. Hardy's was a tough loss, plunging the O's back into the dark days of "Cesar Izturis, starting shortstop," but he'll be back in six weeks or so. (Ben Lindbergh)
2011-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat)What the hell happened to Chin Lung Hu? I get the .900 OPS at Vegas was a PCL-driven mirage - but can he still be a serviceable MLB SS, given how awful the average really is?
(RC from Amazing Race Commercials. Ugh.)
Actually, that career year (2007, I believe) came mostly at Jacksonville, not Vegas. That in theory should make it look even better, and it did get him up on the prospect charts, but he's never been able to match it. I think he gets a bad rap because of his atrocious 2008 filling in at the big league level when every Dodger shortstop was hurt (they actually had to go out and get Angel "of Death" Berroa, for chrissakes), but he'll never be more than a below-average hitter.

Still, his fielding is so good that if he's less than league average at the plate, that's a shortstop who can at least be a placeholder until you find someone better. It's the Cesar Izturis career path. (Mike Petriello)
2010-12-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)What type of ceiling do you see for Starlin Castro?
(Matt from Chicago)
In a few years he'll be able to afford whatever type of ceiling he wants – tin, mahogany, mother-of-pearl, his choice. He's not going to develop Hanley-esque power, won't steal plenty of bases, and isn't a superlative shortstop. However, the kid can flat-out hit, and should maintain enough of an average to keep his OBP acceptable. In this day and age, when Cesar Izturis still has a job and Ryan Theriot is viewed as a SS upgrade by a contender, he's got a well-rounded skill-set that will soon be worth millions. Peak of Edgar Renteria, maybe? (Ken Funck)
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)I'm staring at using Alex Escobar or Ian Desmond every day at SS in an OBP/SLG redraft league. Maintain the course with two of my favorite preseason SS sleepers, or upgrade quickly?
(Will from Mactaquac)
I would upgrade if you can, but SS is an easy position to punt as well. I have Cesar Izturis in an AL-only league and don't even feel bad about it. (Marc Normandin)
2009-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)As an A's fan i'm tired of cabrera/crosby, they are horrible. I see cliff pennington in AAA doing well, any chance he can be a starting SS in the ryan theriot/pre 09 bartlett type till grant green is ready?
(eric from sacramento)
I'd certainly rather see that, although admittedly is of a piece with my scientific curiosity as far as Eric Patterson's utility. If Pennington can play short well enough in the interim, that's better than winding up with the odd Cesar Izturis type, which at this point given Cabrera and Crosby's feckless performances, seems relatively like high-grade feck to me. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Robert Andino is ready to be a starter,or is back-up his peak?
(TGisriel from Baltimore)
He can be Cesar Izturis next year, a starter on a bad team that doesn't have many other options and has no need to spend money on the hole. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-12-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)Did the Orioles make any attempts to fix the situation at SS? You think they'll miss Rocky?
(Corkedbat from Dallas)
They are on the verge of signing Cesar Izturis to play shortstop. While I love his name, I don't think Rocky Cherry will be missed. (John Perrotto)
