2012-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)I understand it's still not that large of a sample size to go off of, however, is Billy Hamilton the real deal or is there a real chance he turns into Joey Gathright? On a scale of 1 to 10, your thoughts on his chances to stay at SS or 2B?
(Nevy72 from Staten Island, NY)
He's way better than Gathright, and faster. Almost zero chance to stay at SS, and I think they should move him to CF today. (Kevin Goldstein)
2011-06-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Alcides Escobar is showing that there is some production in his bat. Can he keep up being not terrible on offense for a good part of his career?
(Jerry from Bass Boat)
A guy like that is always tough to project long-term. He's a classic high-speed, low-walk guy. Some of these guys get lots of chances to play regularly (like Juan Pierre). Others don't (like Joey Gathright). Lucky for Escobar, he is a plus defender at a premium position, so I would wager between that, his speed, his youth, and his ability to hit for a decent enough batting average that he'll get his fair share of chances. As long as he plays, he'll be a fantasy asset, especially if a team lets him leadoff. (Derek Carty)
2010-07-01 14:00:00 (link to chat)I've read scouts say that Bryce Harper has "off the charts" power which I equate to 80. Please put that into perspective. Who in the MLB, past or present, would have 80 power? Who would have 80 speed, throwing arm, batting eye, fastball, curveball, etc...
(redsoxin2004 from Columbia, CT)
We talked about this on the podcast! 80 power guys are Howard, Stanton (at least two that come to mind). 80 speed is Joey Gathright, Gary Brown. Ichiro has an 80 arm, Feliz has an 80 fastball, can't think of an 80 curve, batting eye is NOT a tool, no matter what anyone tells you. (Kevin Goldstein)
2009-02-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)Christina, I'm a long-time fan of your work but a first-time emailer. Do you see Fukudome bouncing back for the Cubs? I like the idea of his arm in center, if/when Bradley is healthy. Reed Johnson just doesn't do it for me as an everyday CF. Thanks!
(MoJo from Washington, DC)
Hi MoJo, glad for the compliment, so many thanks. Yeah, there's something specifically Cubby cuddly about how Reed Johnson was taken to be a speed guy and a regular center fielder, two things he most obviously is not. I'm less excited about Fukudome in center than resigned to it, because there's nothing else to be done with him. It says something about how nova his star has gone that I think he's got to be the favorite over guys like Johnson and Joey Gathright. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-02-10 14:00:00 (link to chat)I don't like much of what Jim Hendry has done this offseason but what confuses me is letting Henry Blanco walk? Are koyie Hill and Paul Bako the left handed hitting messiahs? What am I missing? Was Blanco too expensive? Is he injured?
(ced from chicago)
I can understand a desire to get a backup for Geovany Soto who's an opposite-side hitter, but yes, I'd rather have spent the money to retain Blanco than spend it on Bako (or Joey Gathright, for that matter). (Christina Kahrl)
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat)The Royals are going to cut Justin Huber, a young power hitter, which is something they are desperately in need of, in favor of Ross Gload and Joey Gathright. Is there any hope for this organization?
(Bearfrog from Dallas)
Well, I may be no big booster for Gload or Gathright, but if you want to scapegoat somebody, how about Ryan Shealy? I still don't get why people got all that worked up about Shealy. Similarly, I think my fellow statheads need to wrap their heads around the idea that Huber really isn't all that. He's not really that patient, he doesn't really have that much power, and physically, he really is only a first baseman. If you want to have him around instead of somebody else, pick on the older, just as right-handed first baseman who only ever mashed in Colorado Springs, and even that was off of thrice-cooked Triple-A lefty mound fodder. (Christina Kahrl)

As for Fowler, let me know when he can jump over a car like Joey Gathright.
