2010 Traded to Texas in the ill-fated Eric Gagné deal, oft-injured Kason Gabbard was bought back by the Sox in April, only to land back on the DL.
2009 Gabbard spent a good chunk of the season sheathed by surgery to remove a bone spur from his pitching elbow. You can hope that this means he'll be healthy and recover a modicum of his control and make a solid bid for a spot in the rotation, but he wasn't able to participate in the initial round of the much-discussed "Nolan-style" winter workouts. If he's sound, he'll be in the running for one of the three open rotation slots in camp, but he'll have to be effective to stay ahead of the pack of youngsters nearing readiness.
2008 Gabbard exceeded his ability in seven starts for Boston last summer, creating some trade value for the Sox. After coming to Texas in the Gagn? swap, he pitched like most scouts expected him to, getting plenty of groundouts, but not much else. Gabbard is a mismatched, platypus of a pitcher, a finesse guy without plus control, but his sinker is good enough for fifth starter-dom. In a testament to how over-the-top the game's love of relief pitching has become, Gabbard finished tied for fifth in the AL in shutouts-with one.
2007 Gabbard Gabbard Hey! Improved command helped this unprepossessing lefty finally break out of Double-A, and with Boston`s injury woes, it wasn`t long before he was making big league cameos. While he had trouble staying in the strike zone, Gabbard was a worm-killing machine, generating a ton of grounders and escaping jams with double plays. In a system that doesn`t lack for pitching prospects, he`ll remain a sleeper, but there are worse things the Sox could have stashed away.
