2011-03-02 13:00:00 (link to chat)I was surprised I haven't heard more from you on the Philly roster construction - they seem tailor made to go with a 10 man staff and give Cholly all kind of platoon options to create some value in the line-up. Is it because their "adds" don't point that way, or are you just afraid to put your hopes in writing and see them dashed again?
(Brecken from Chicago)
I think it's a sign of the times that we ought to be able to celebrate the Phillies dialing down to six relievers this season, and making space for a sixth bench player. Of course, there's the bit about being careful what you wish for--if it's for Brian Bocock's benefit, that's sort of sad for everyone but Bocock. John Mayberry Jr., Jeff Larish... Robb Quinlan? A Larish/Quinlan matched set? See, part of the problem is that beyond notionally carring a RF platoon if Domonic Brown splits the job with Ben Francisco is that they'll have their lefty PH in Ross "Three Bricks Shy of a" Gload, and with that rotation, it isn't like they'll have a ton of PH assignments in the first place. They could use the 25th slot on just about anything, and whoever he is, he won't play much. (Christina Kahrl)
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Two Questions What is the most the Phillies can get for Joe Blanton and how much of his salary can they eat? Do you think Dominic Brown will start the year in the major leagues or will the Phillies sign a veteran bat like Jermaine Dye.
(John from Philadelphia)
Dom Brown I say starts in the majors, but isn't an everyday player until the end of May. Going with a platoon of Brown/Francisco should be fine. I don't see what Jermaine Dye could provide that Ben Francisco can't, and the latter makes like $500,000. As for Blanton, the Phillies need to wait. There is no rush to trade him. Once Pavano signs, Blanton is the most attractive trade target, a 180-200 IP pitcher with a talent level in that 4.10-4.30 ERA range. If they traded him right now I would say they eat $9 of the $17 million and get prospects we never hear from again in return. Come February I would venture to guess they eat $6 million and get a couple prospects, one of whom will have some type of impact. (Eric Seidman)
2009-06-08 14:00:00 (link to chat)Why am I in central Ohio and not northern Ohio? I hate Columbus.
(Matt LaPorta from Columbus)
Because 49 ABs are fantastic information. And Ben Francisco looks athletic. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)Matt LaPorta is raking at AAA: what do you estimate his ETA to be and who will he be taking PT from?
(KO from Pittsfield, MA)
Ben Francisco isn't an everyday player, more a fourth outfielder, so you could start there. An offense/defense platoon makes some sense with those two. LaPorta can also get time at 1B for Ryan Garko and ... well, Travis Hafner isn't quite ready to cede DH, it appears.

I'd get LaPorta up pretty soon. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-12-23 14:00:00 (link to chat)Who should start for Cleveland's outfield this year? Should LaPorta be starting in left with Choo in right?
(SaberTJ from Cleveland, OH)
I figure LaPorta gets into the left-field picture at some point, with Ben Francisco holding the fort in the meantime before moving to right and platooning with Choo once LaPorta's up. (Christina Kahrl)
