2010 Useful with the Braves in 2008, Jeff Bennett was most notable in '09 for breaking a bone in his non-throwing hand by punching a wall, then going back out to pitch through it. Released after rehabbing, but re-signed to a minor-league deal.
2009 Bennett dislocated his pitching shoulder in early July, but missed just three weeks and was better after he returned than before the injury. Despite the time on the shelf, he appeared in 72 games, starting four and adding 80 2/3 innings out of the pen, a workload similar to the one he bore for Triple-A Richmond in 2007. That durability and flexibility combined with a tight slider and a spike in his ground-ball rate (opponents slugged just .333) made him a very valuable pitcher to have on staff. If Bennett can reduce his walks and keep inducing grounders, he could have a breakout season in 2009—if those workloads don’t make it a breakdown season.
2008 Jeff Bennett keeps the ball down and could be a back-end-of-the-rotation solution.
2006 Another of Melvin`s Rule 5 explorations, Bennett got real playing time in an `04 mop-up role, then failed to impress with a season spent in the PCL. Signed to a minor league deal with the Braves, who will give him more chances to flash his mid-90s heat after he was repeatedly passed up by the Brewers last summer.
2005 Bennett pitched well enough in 2004 to justify the Rule 5 pick that the Brewers made to acquire him from Pittsburgh, but probably not well enough to guarantee himself a spot on the 2005 staff. He still lacks a true out pitch, with just an average fastball and a mediocre slider, but his command is better than most players his age. He has enough usefulness to stick around as a cheap middle reliever, but there isn't a compelling reason to keep him once he reaches arbitration eligibility.
