2016-04-21 19:00:00 (link to chat) | How is it possible for the Angels to be putting this horrible of a roster out there despite having a $140 million payroll and emptying out the last of their farm system for Simmons? (Kristen from Canada) | $140 million isn't really a lot in this day and age, and they have such big chunks invested in players like Albert Pujols, who is still solid but not the superstar he was, and C.J. Wilson on the DL. They simply couldn't spend anything this winter on even marginal upgrades like Howie Kendrick over Johnny Giavotella and it shows on the active roster. They overpaid for Andrelton Simmons but even before that trade their farm system was just so bad. They are at the end of a success cycle that didn't offer a lot of success and likely have to consider rebuilding if they can't spend more money. (Mike Gianella) |
2014-08-06 16:30:00 (link to chat) | 12 team roto dynasty league. Standard 5x5 keep whole roster. Guy wants give me Bogaerts and Archie Bradley for Baez. Do I have to do this? Fluctuating between 1st and 2nd right now. Already have D. Gordon, Dozier, and Utley. Only Hanley at SS. Would probably drop Calhoun, J.D. Martinez, Duda, or C.J. Wilson. (Scott from SC) | Pull the trigger. Baez won't have a good WHIP for the rest of the year. (Cespedes Family BBQ) |
2014-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Will C.J. Wilson continue to disappoint in 2014? (Alex from Anaheim) | I have been pessimistic on CJ Wilson for years, so "disappoint" depends on your expectations. He exceeded my expectations last year. His arm action (highly pronated early in the arm path) and C-level mechanics limit the ceiling in my view. (Doug Thorburn) |
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat) | Angels rotation: Jered Weaver, C.J. Wilson, Garrett Richards, Hector Santiago, Tyler Skaggs
Any strong opinions as either Buy/Sell for 2014? (Robert from California) | Hi Robert:
No, not particularly. A lot depends on your league. Weaver's declining strikeout rates make him a sell if people still value him like the pitcher he was 3-4 years ago, but everyone else is probably valued appropriately. I think Skaggs might be overvalued if people see him as the prospect he was a few years ago. Richards could sneak in cheap, but I'd like to see more refinement of his secondary stuff (not only the pitches but the sequencing) before buying in on him. (Mike Gianella) |
2013-05-24 14:00:00 (link to chat) | 1) Who was the player; 2) did he give you suspicious eyes? (Sarge from Philly) | So it was C.J. Wilson, but in the few minutes before I had to shake his hand I tried to wash my hands with water from the dugout water cooler. Only I accidentally used the Gatorade cooler and got Gatorade all over my hands and pants. I'm a real winner. So at that point I almost faked my own death and fled the scene. But, no, no suspicious eyes. (Sam Miller) |
2013-05-22 18:00:00 (link to chat) | Need to trade a SP for a power hitter out of the following: Cueto, Iwakuma, Medlen, C.J. Wilson, Haren, E. Jackson, Phelps and now Gausman. Who would you deal and who would you target? 5x5 OBP. Thanks... (LoyalRoyal from Kansas) | If you want a power hitter, you're going to have to deal Iwakuma. If I'm the other team, I'm not giving up a big bat for the other guys the way they're looking. (Jason Collette) |
2013-04-16 20:00:00 (link to chat) | What do u do with segura when hanley comes back whats a pitxher i can go after? (Dhale243 from San diego) | If he's playing well at that point, you can target a solid starter who's off to a bit of a slow start. Possibly a Homer Bailey or C.J. Wilson - just keep your eyes open as to who needs MI help in your league. (Bret Sayre) |
2012-11-09 14:00:00 (link to chat) | There was an idea that C.J. Wilson was a "young" 31-year-old starter when he hit the market because most of his career had been spent as a reliever. Was that idea too simplistic and, whatever your answer, does it tell us anything for Wilson going forward? (Jerry from Anaheim) | I thought that the Angels overpaid for a guy who had a ton of question marks, and throwing fewer innings in the 'pen did not necessarily excuse him from workload concerns. Wilson relies on angles and deception, and generally has issues with hitting his spots, and combined with the durability concerns I felt that 5 years and $78 million was too much of a commitment for a 30-year old with two good seasons of starting under his belt. But the Angels can apparently afford to make such mistakes (insert Vernon Wells joke here).

2012-03-15 12:00:00 (link to chat) | What frontline starter that changed teams this year do you think will most impress his new team? Most depress them? (Mark Fidrych from The Nest) | Impress: Pineda. I think we're ignoring that he entered last season with 25 starts above A-ball and fared well in the majors.
Depress: I still worry about what the Rangers know (or don't know) regarding C.J. Wilson. If Trevor Cahill or Gio Gonzalez count I could see their teams being a little disappointed too. Oh, and Jonathan Sanchez. But I don't think anyone actually thinks of him as a frontline starter. (R.J. Anderson) |
2011-10-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Say the Yankees make a big splash in FA (grab Fielder and/or SP (C.J. Wilson?)), they pretty much force themselves to trade Montero, right? (faztradamus from couch) | Yep. Still an excellent trade chip. (Jason Parks) |
2011-05-23 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Looking at CJ Wilson and Alexi Ogando, I'm curious which relievers out there do you feel have adequate secondary stuff to succeed as starters? (Teenwolf from Vancouver, BC) | I was a big fan of the C.J. Wilson switch to the rotation, as you know. In general, I fall with the camp that likes to see good pitchers in the rotation where they can maximize their value.
However, as a way of ducking your very good question, one thing near the top of my research list is learning what it really takes for pitchers to succeed at the relief-to-starting switch. There are so many sample biases that it makes for a difficult to study to undertake. (Mike Fast) |
2010-10-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | How do you think Texas will do in games 1 and 2 with CJ Wilson and Colby Lewis on the hill? (SprungOnSports from Long Island) | Huge, huge C.J. Wilson fan. I think the Rangers are going to surprise a lot of people and take down the Yankees pretty swiftly thanks to those two arms, never mind Cliff Lee. (Marc Normandin) |
2010-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | The Tigers have a lot of money coming off the books. Do you see them finding a big bat like Dunn, or will they concentrate on completing their rotation? (do you buy Phil Coke starting btw?) (lemppi from Ankeny, IA) | I do see them making a play to stay in the AL Central picture, in no small part because I don't think Dave Dombrowski and Jim Leyland are hanging around for the pleasure of it alone. And I do buy Phil Coke starting--in the monkey-see, monkey-do competitive ecology of the game, the Rangers' success with C.J. Wilson this season is sure to find emulation in other organizations. Which I'm glad for, because who knows how many starting pitchers we've lost over the last generation to the unwillingness to take a few risks with a player already successful in one role or another.
The problem for the Tigers is that the stakes in the Central are higher now, as the White Sox discovered this season. Gunning for a title and <90 wins avails you little if there's a better ballclub than that above you in the standings. If the Twins stay up there, the standards are higher than what the Tigers and Sox were able to get away with the last few years. (Christina Kahrl) |
2010-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I'm in a shallow 8 team league with some friends. I drafter Chipper, but grabbed Headley on the waiver wire. Do I drop Chipper and grab a pitcher? Jaime Garcia, Brad Penny, Phil Hughes, Brett Cecil, and Wade Davis are all available.
Bonus round: I already snagged CJ Wilson off the wire. Do you like any of the guys I listed better than CJ? Thanks! (Gregjitsu from Cal) | I like C.J. Wilson a lot. I think he's like Buehrle with more strikeouts (more walks too, though). I wonder why he started out as a reliever, because he's got the stuff and repertoire to be a starter.
Hughes, Cecil or Davis would all be worthwhile IMO. Cecil will probably give you the fewest wins though, when the Jays remember they are the Jays. (Marc Normandin) |
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat) | I read previously in this chat that Brandon Mccarthy among others was in the rotation next year when in reality Neftali Feliz and/or C.J. Wilson will be included in the Rangers rotation next year. Am I right or wrong? and won't this make their rotation at least on par with the other teams in the division? Thanks (Tim Barta from Dallas, Texas) | They're considering Wilson, and we'll see if it takes; more often than not, they get explored, discussed, maybe even tried out in spring, and then they don't happen in the real season. They might have enough viable candidates that Feliz-as-reliever makes sense as well. The key to my way of thinking is as I said on Saturday is that they have eight plausible starting pitchers, McCarthy, Feliz, and Wilson among them. (Christina Kahrl) |
2009-04-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Why can't I be next in line for the Nationals saves? (Joe Beimel from Washington) | It's rare that the lefty setup guy makes that jump. Sherrill did, I guess, but he's not really an endosement. Same for C.J. Wilson. You just end up giving up the platoon advantage in too many spots. (Joe Sheehan) |

2010-10-06 10:00:00 | 2010 Playoffs Day One | So, tomorrow is Pavano vs. Pettitte and Shields vs. C.J. Wilson... any strong feelings about how that's going to turn out? (Christina Kahrl) |
