2009-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)While I'm usually a JP supporter I'm growing tired of his inability to fill the LF/DH hole. Shannon Stewart, Brad Wilkerson, Dave Dellucci, Kevin Millar and Russ Adams clearly aren't the answer so what would you do?
(Bill from Toronto)
I think he absolutely had the right idea with Travis Snider at the outset of the year, but it hasn't worked out yet. He didn't hit in ~100 PA, he had some back problems, he's missed a month. He's only 21, so it's far too early to give up hope that he can be the long-term solution there. (Jay Jaffe)
2009-06-11 14:00:00 (link to chat)What gives with the Blue Jays dealing with Boras, going for high ceiling guys, and being less predictable/ossified with draft strategy? Can I finally forget the Russ Adams experience?
(Jim Clancy from Exhibition Stadium)
Yes you can. I don't think this is any kind of instant transformation, it's been more of a slow burn away from the pure Moneyball strategy. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-12-05 14:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for chatting Jay - two part question. 1) Would the following be an equitable trade - Jays send Lyle Overbay and Russ Adams to the Mariners for Jarrod Washburn and some cash? 2) What possible excuse could JP Ricciardi put forth this year for not having Travis Snider in the opening day lineup?
(rawagman from Toronto)
No, it's not enough going to the Mariners, as Adams is without value given his shortcomings on both sides of the ball.

As for Snider, he had a very nice cup of coffee last year and he's not far off, but he's got less than 150 AB above Double-A, and just 500 above A-ball, so I don't think there's harm in some seasoning at Triple-A. But I look forward to an obfuscation from J.P. nonetheless, as those are worth the price of admission. (Jay Jaffe)
2008-03-11 12:00:00 (link to chat)Joe. Remembering back to all the hope and excitement that existed upon JP Ricciardi's hiring from the Beane braintrust, even with '08 yet to play out, a lot of his sheen seems to be long lost. His hubris regarding Russ Adams development in particular seems to have really underminded the club he could have built (ie. the non drafting of Tulowitzki). When his tenure's concluded (when ever that is) what would be your evaluation? Thanks.
(Shane from Saint John, NB)
I go back to the winter of 2004, when the Jays were coming off that injury-riddled season. Had Ricciardi just said, "injury year, core is good, plan is fine," the Jays would have been in pretty good shape. Instead, they signed Koskie, made the mistake in the draft, and generally got away from what was working.

Misidentifying the problem in '04 was where it went wrong. This team, the '08 one, could be good, but then again, they can't even identify the best shortstop for the team, so... (Joe Sheehan)
