2014-01-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat, Paul. Do you think the Angels would be better off not overpaying the likes of Matt Garza and focusing on acquiring cheap starting rotation depth (e.g. Capuano, Jeff Francis) and more pen arms (Balfour, etc)? Or is that important to have a decent #3 starter, even if you have to overpay?
(Dennis from LA)
No, I think they need a big arm. I'm advocating them for Tanaka heavily. I think it'd be the perfect move. In the absence of that, Garza is a nice fallback. They're trying to buy the key wins, so overpaying a bit is OK. They were near .500 in a disaster season, they'll be better this year. (Paul Sporer)
2010-05-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will Brandon Webb's shoulder see any action in Phoenix this year?
(Paul from DC)
I'm leaning yes. The way Jeff Francis came back has to make Webb's fans happy, though looking at the comparitive timelines isn't that good for the Dbacks and their one-year deal. (Will Carroll)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Let's assume for arguments sake that O'Down lets Marquis walk, trades Hawpe for a prospect and non tenders Atkins. That would free up nearly $20MM for 2010. Where would you spend that money? I guess 2B is an obvious upgrade spot, but beyond that, I'm not sure O'Dowd could spend that amount money effectively in free agency. Maybe they could allocate it to the draft and Venezuala?
(Dan from Denver)
It's never that simple. Betancourt's on the books for next season if they pick up his option, so that's a big chunk of change ($5+ million). Huston Street's arb-eligible, so is Jorge De La Rosa and Chris Iannetta and Ryan Spilborghs; all will get raises. Tulo's salary goes up a couple of million; so does Jeff Francis' and Manny Corpas'. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't go big-game hunting, beyond seeing what they might get out of a Hawpe deal, whether win-now help or a prospect with near-term value on the big-league team. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-04-10 16:30:00 (link to chat)Hey Christina, any thoughts on Ubaldo Jimenez and Franklin Morales so far this year? They've thrown a combined 13IP 8H 1ER 4BB 1HR 14K. Sample size + control problems. But those K numbers look pretty good.
(Jason from Devner)
You don't need me or even Kevin to tell you those guys are talented; it's just a good bit of news for the Rox that in the year Jeff Francis is out, those two might be squared away to join Aaron Cook and give the team a trio they can project playing key roles years into the future. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-05-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Did I just make a big mistake cutting Jeff Francis? And is it worth hanging on to Clay Buchholz, especially with Colon pitching well?
(Yatchisin from Santa Barbara)
Francis is a good pitcher, but he's not a good fantasy option. I hope the Sox wouldn't be silly enough to keep Colon on the major league roster in favor of Buchholz, when he's ready to come back. That would just...gah. Bad Sox. (Marc Normandin)
2008-01-29 16:00:00 (link to chat)What kind of production can we expect out of Pedro this year? Should I succumb to my man crush on Pedro or should I go with a safer guy like a Jeff Francis?
(Shipoopi from Quohog, RI)
Pedro is the new Luis Tiant - who hurt his arm, looked washed up, then resurrected his career with the Red Sox in the early 1970s. Pedro is older than Tiant, but like Tiant, while he may have lost his best stuff, he still knows how to pitch.

Like Tiant, he still has the ability to reach back and put something extra on the ball when he needs to, and he still has the urge to shove the bat up the hitters' ass - he's not giving in to nobody. The Amazing Pedro Experience is over, but Twilight Pedro is still going to be fun to watch. It's just going to be at 170 innings a year, not 210. Three hundred wins is not out of the question.

Inning for inning, Pedro will be better than Francis in 2008. Francis may have more overall value because he'll pitch more. (Rany Jazayerli)

2009-06-09 14:30:002009 Draft CoverageOne of the great things about being at BP is having great help just a few keyboard clicks away. I asked Rany, who did his fantastic series on draft history, if he remembers a draft that was better 11-20 than 1-10. Rany jumped into action for me, and found just one in 15 years: 2002.

Top Ten: B.J. Upton, Zack Greinke, Prince Fielder, Jeff Francis.
11-20: Hermida, Joe Saunders, Scott Kazmir, Nick Swisher, Cole Hamels, James Loney, Denard Span.

The best example is 1994, where Garciaparra, Konerko and Varitek went 12-14. Needless to say, the top 10 that boasted Paul Wilson, Ben Grieve, Todd Walker and Jaret Wright wasn't as good. (Bryan Smith)
