2010-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat)Pick two of these for my final keepers? Tulo, Adrian Gonzalez, Mark Reynolds. I'm leaning Tulo and Adrian. (already keeping Miguel Cabrera, Lincecum and Kemp)
(malmstorm from Minneapolis)
Tulo and Adrian is how I would pick as well. Reynolds did much better last year than I ever expected him to, but I would have a hard time giving him a keeper pick based off of just the one season. (Marc Normandin)
2009-12-15 14:00:00 (link to chat)How available is Miguel Cabrera and what haul would he need to bring back? Seems to me that due to the money involved, teams will only really give up 2, to use Kevin Goldstein's rating system, 4 star players. Is that accurate?
(Nick Carter from London, UK)
Between his coming down a peg in terms of stardom, his personal embarrassment at the tail end of last season, and the expense of employing him, I don't see a lot of teams getting in on him, were the Tigers even shopping him around. A lot of what's going on with the Tigers for 2010 seems to be about enduring/making the most of the last year of the current deals with Bonderman, Willis, Robertson, Ordonez, and Inge, and then turning the page. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-12-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)From John Perrotto's column: "If the Red Sox fail to sign Bay, they are expected to vigorously pursue a trade for Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera." Um, why not just forget about Bay and go for Cabrera?
(Ryan from Denver)
Because one costs money (lots less, too) and the other costs talent and money. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)What teams do you see lining up to trade for Miguel Cabrera?
(Greg from St. Louis )
I wonder if he would be the backup plan for the Red Sox if they cannot land Adrian Gonzalez. They could certainly stand to part with talent and absorb Cabrera's contract, and they are known to be seeking another bopper. (Eric Seidman)
2009-11-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Assuming the Giants could even absorb the extra payroll, would Posey & Bumgarner be too much to give up for Cabrera?
(Rob from Oakland)
Yes, especially given the cost, the surrendering of a top-tier catching prospect, and Cabrera's track record of, well, staying out of shape. It would seem to be more in their wheelhouse to revisit those Cain-Fielder discussions and see what comes from that. Given Posey's potential, the question becomes, would you rather have Bengie Molina and Miguel Cabrera or Buster Posey and either Nick Johnson or Russell Branyan? I'd spring for the latter. (Eric Seidman)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)The talk in MN is now about an extension for Mauer. Any idea about what would be a reasonable length and amount to offer?
(collins from greenville nc)
Mauer's one of the people you do turn a blind eye to market developments and price as if the economic downturn didn't happen. If Miguel Cabrera could get eight years and $150 million once upon a time, that doesn't seem like a bad place to ballpark the conversation. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-10-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Aiyyo Xina. So Mr. Sheehan was SO GLIB AND SNARKY when I asked him via chat whether Miguel Cabrera had boozed his (Cabrera's) way off the MVP ballot. Please please tell him to rethink this, and please please tell me you agree that it's a serious question. Thanx, g-mo.
(g-mo from West Bumpus)
Yo g-mo, whaddup? (I will now cease to be 'fresh,' or whatever it is the kids call it these days. I mean, really, I tell Charge of the Light Brigade anecdotes--does it get *less* cool or contemporary than that?)

My thought? Voters are human beings, and respond viscerally. I don't think Cabrera had all that great a shot in the first place, but I wouldn't rule out that this hurt him as far as some down-ballot inclusiveness. (Christina Kahrl)
2009-08-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)Does Texiera really deserve MVP consideration ahead of Miguel Cabrera? Their numbers look similar to me, and Miggy means a lot more to the bad Tigers O (agree this is Mauer's year).
(ct tiger from connecticut)
Probably not. And there's other hitters you could mention. Again, I like Teixeira, but he shouldn't be such a big part of the conversation. (Ken Funck)
2009-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Joe: What player(s) (non-Pujols division), if any, with less than 10 years of MLB service could retire at the end of this season and be a pretty good bet for the HoF? (If Albert pulled a Jim Brown, he would still be a shoo-in, right?)
(Matt from Chicago)
Tough call. Does Miguel Cabrera get a look? I don't think any pitchers do. Chase Utley on peak value? (Joe Sheehan)
2009-06-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)I know you already answered a Montero question, but does he have a reasonable shot at being Miguel Cabrera?
(willjosh09 from Poughkeepsie)
Clay's peak translations for Montero's Florida State League partial season is .333/.409/.634. I take that with a grain of salt, but he just might be that good. It's always dangerous projecting exactly linear growth in one so young, but we'll know a lot more the further Montero gets into his Double-A campaign. Again, the question is, even if he is that good, where and when do the Yankees make room for him? (Steven Goldman)
2009-03-19 15:00:00 (link to chat)What's your view on Wilmer Flores? Is he compared to Miguel Cabrera because it's appropriate, or because it's convenient?
(joalryan from Chicago)
Obviously, anytime you are comparing a guy out of short season with an established superstar, it's dangerous. Still, it's a very promising bat for a teenager, and like Cabrera, he's got a thick lower half that's going to limit him defensively down the road. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-03-31 13:00:00 (link to chat)Woo-hoo... Yankees rainout, Royals-Tigers on all afternoon! What's your best comp for a player of Miguel Cabrera's level of ability and accomplishment playing for a new major league team at/before age 25?
(BL from Bozeman)
I'm sure we could do a systematic check on this, and no doubt y'all will hit me with dozens o' obvious choices after I answer, but the obvious choice would be A-Rod, going from the M's to the Rangers. (Steven Goldman)
2008-03-18 17:00:00 (link to chat)What sort of numbers do you think Pujols will put up this year? Who will challenge him among National League hitters?
(Tim W. from Austin)
I see no reason why his EqA won't be in the high .320s/low .330s, regardless of his troubles. One of the men most capable of challenging him is now in Detroit. The departure of Miguel Cabrera to Detroit makes him a bit safer, but Ryan Braun can challenge. If Chipper Jones approximates his 2007 and stays healthy, he's right there in MLVr with Pujols. Ditto Matt Holliday and Chase Utley. (Jim Baker)
2008-02-28 14:00:00 (link to chat)Miguel Cabrera or Gary Sheffield in Detroit's 3 spot? How much of a difference would it make having one in the 3 spot over the other assuming the other hits in the 5 spot?
(Ben from Ohio)
I'd rather have Cabrera up there, because I don't think you can let him get too many at-bats with which to positively smoke pitches. (Christina Kahrl)
2008-01-25 13:30:00 (link to chat)Whats your take on the Brandon Inge soap opera in Detroit.
(joe from n.y.)
Well, given his three straight years of offensive decline, his age (he'll be 31 in May), and what he's owed ($6.2M, $6.3, $6.6 for a total of $19.1M) it's not so surprising that the Tigers have found few takers and with his defensive prowess seem to be looking at him in a super-sub kind of role. The question will really be whether he'll accept that role or turn into a clubhouse cancer that forces them to eat much of the remaining salary.

As far as the soap opera around his asking to be traded and not speaking to a reporter recently, I certainly don't blame him. He's in a pretty tough spot and any competitor at that level wants playing time

As an aside, defensively (using SFR) I have him at -6, +4, +20, +9 since 2004 at third base which pretty much parallels FRAA (+6,+15,+25,+14). Miguel Cabrera, on the other hand, I had at +0, -1, -5, -10 in 2003, and 2005-2007 at third base. (Dan Fox)
2008-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)John, which is likely more important for Detroit this year: Miguel Cabrera's added offense over Brandon Inge, or Dontrelle Willis successfully adjusting to the AL and posting numbers at least similar to '06 (if not better). Thanks for your thoughts.
(Yoop from Ankeny, IA)
Cabrera's offense. No slight to Willis, who could really help the Tigers, but Cabrera is one of the game's premier hitters. He makes an already-dangerous lineup downright scary. (John Perrotto)
2008-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Miguel Cabrera's weight will affect his performance in Detroit in the near future?
(mbeu79 from Chicago)
No. Already hearing he's dropped weight and someone emailed me saying that he thought the veterans in Detroit would hold Cabrera more accountable for things like conditioning. What's the worst that happens, he becomes David Ortiz? (Will Carroll)
2008-02-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you had to choose between Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols for a 3 year keeper league, which one would you take?
(mbeu79 from Chicago)
Cabrera on age, but it's very, very close. (Will Carroll)
2008-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat)Will the following players still be at the same position in 3 years: (a) Jay Bruce--CF, (b) Ryan Braun--3B, and (c) Miguel Cabrera--3B.
(jwr from Chicago)
A. Leaning towards yes, but not in five years.
B. No.
C. No. (Kevin Goldstein)
