2016-06-27 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Earlier in this year when discussing Eloy Jimenez, one site noted that disparate SO and BB rates have been stumbling blocks for young RH corner players like Joel Guzman, R.Liriano, Willy Mo Pena, etc. Would you lump Jimenez into that group? (Nick from Chicago) | "When in doubt, stat 'em out" was a piece of advice I received early on in my baseball career and strike out to walk ratio is definitely one to keep an eye on. I wouldn't lump Jimenez into that group yet because he is still in A-ball and he shows the ability to make adjustments with his swing and approach. Let's give him some time to make adjustments and then we can revisit the conversation. (James Fisher) |
2010-12-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | When does a prospect/young player cross the line and become a bust?
Would you consider Alex Gordon, Brandon Wood, Cameron Maybin, Andy Marte, and Joel Guzman busts? (Steve from Las Vegas) | Andy Marte - yes. Brandon Wood - yes. Cameron Maybin is approaching that territory though he could still be a somewhat useful major leaguer. Alex Gordon is only going to be a bust relative to expectations. He can still be a productive major leaguer, unlike say Andy LaRoche, but he is not going to become the perennial all star many originally thought. To me, there is no clear line of demarcation but rather a situation that has a certain feel to it. Wood has shown no signs of improvement, nor has Maybin. Gordon has. (Eric Seidman) |
2008-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | With Aybar detained & it looking like Longoria might start the season in Durham, is this Joel Guzman's last chance to prove to be the stud everyone thought he was and not just a fringe MLB player? (Tommy from TheStatPack) | Guzman's been a good body with middling-to-poor results for too long--if the Rays stop looking at him as a thirdbaseman, he doesn't get on base enough to even merit consideration anywhere else. Between Longoria and Iwamura, the Rays are stacked at the hot corner. (Derek Jacques) |
2008-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | It's looking like Willy Aybar/Joel Guzman will open the season at 3rd base for the Rays. Do you think Longoria needs more AAA Ab's or is he ready to start opening day? (Tommy from TheStatPack) | Now that they've acquired Aybar, who could be a real surprise if he has conquered his personal demons, I have no problem with Longoria getting some development time. However, I wouldn't have had a problem with Longoria starting in the big leagues either. However, it can't hurt to buy him a little more time. (John Perrotto) |
2008-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat) | In the case Longoria starts the year in Durham, do you think Joel Guzman will be an adequate stopgap 3B for the Rays or would we be better served by signing a Free Agent 3B? (jlarsen from DRays Bay) | I don't think Joel Guzman is even an adequate stopgap at 3B for Durham at this point. (Kevin Goldstein) |
