2011-11-30 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Why are people touting John Jaso as a Carlos Ruiz-esque catcher and already declaring the Mariners the winner in the Lueke/Jaso trade? Lueke's good K/9 and solid BB/9 numbers to go with his decent FIP make it seem like he'll be good RP with right defense behind him. Character issues are the only concern and Rays have had their fair share of questionable people in past. Jaso is a horrible defender(shoulder surgery in the middle levels of his minor league career) and while his BABIP makes one believe he'll rebound from bad 2011, good bet that he won't return to 2010 levels either. (jlarsen from Chicago) | The Mariners win the deal simply because they get rid of the rapey reliever. Seriously, there's never been a player I've more rooted for a career-ending injury than Lueke. As for the comparisons to assholes like Willy Aybar and Elijah Dukes, I recall that those guys were Rays properties before their major transgressions came to light, so it's a different story in terms of how they were handled by the org. I don't think they went out of their way to acquire either knowing as much as they know about Lueke.
Jaso has some offensive ability for a catcher, but I think we've pretty much seen the spectrum of his 90th and 10th percentiles. He can be a decent bat for the position, albeit with sketchy defensive ability. (Jay Jaffe) |
2009-02-11 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Speaking of Andy Marte, is there any chance he can become a Willy Aybar type of player, or is he a complete loss at this point? (Rich from Akron) | Complete loss. (John Perrotto) |
2008-03-25 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Which is the more egregious demotion of a young 3b this spring, Josh Fields or Evan Longoria? (Andrew from Overland Park, KS) | I'll go with Longoria, even if I think it's silly to demote a player as already ready as Fields; at least Fields was demoted because of the existence of an established worthwhile veteran ballplayer. Longoria's being sent down *for Willy Aybar*. There was a point in time where I loved Willy Aybar, and I still think he has some upside--at second base--but there's no way I send Longoria back down. (Christina Kahrl) |
2008-03-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | If you were going to take one 3B upside pick late in the draft, would it be Willy Aybar, Wilson Betemit, Morgan Ensberg, Dallas McPherson, or someone else altogether? (Fantasy Manager from Scoresheet League) | Third base is loaded this year, but it's also kind of cut and dry. I'm not particularly fond of anyone on that list, though taking a late, late flyer on Ensberg is tempting. (Marc Normandin) |
2008-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Willy Aybar went from decent prospect to missing a year and now to jail (did not pass go either), is he the next in a long line of players who let alcohol ruin their career? (R.J. from Beyond the Boxscore) | A couple of questions on this, so I'll answer them together... (Derek Jacques) |
2008-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | After reading many of your "Stupid Lawyer Tricks" articles, I was curious to know if you are a lawyer (like how Rany is a doctor), or if law is just a field you know a lot about. If you are a lawyer, I assume that you're no longer practicing, considering your covering the Caribbean World Series (unless of course, you're Willy Aybar's lawyer). (Rich from Columbus, OH) | I think we've already covered the fact that I'm not Wily Aybar's lawyer, but yes, I am a lawyer. I used to be in private practice but quit when I figured out that working as a writer and editor actually paid better, and would give me the liberty to do cool stuff like this. (Derek Jacques) |
2008-01-24 13:00:00 (link to chat) | It's looking like Willy Aybar/Joel Guzman will open the season at 3rd base for the Rays. Do you think Longoria needs more AAA Ab's or is he ready to start opening day? (Tommy from TheStatPack) | Now that they've acquired Aybar, who could be a real surprise if he has conquered his personal demons, I have no problem with Longoria getting some development time. However, I wouldn't have had a problem with Longoria starting in the big leagues either. However, it can't hurt to buy him a little more time. (John Perrotto) |
