2017-03-22 20:00:00 (link to chat) | I guess this is more rhetorical at this point, but where the hell did *this* Lugo slider come from? (Nick from Albany) | When we say Dan Warthen's responsible for an entire staff of 60 sliders, we're not joking. (Jarrett Seidler) |
2014-04-17 12:00:00 (link to chat) | What are your thoughts on Steven Matz of the Mets? I recently heard Dan Warthen comparing him to Kershaw, which to me sounds crazy, but coming back from TJ, he did pitch well last year. Do you think he'll shoot up prospect lists this year? Could he form a nasty set of pitchers in NY with Harvey, Wheeler, Syndergaard, and Montero sometime in the future? Thanks in advance Matt. I really appreciate the help. (Jeff from New Hampshire) | First, how perfect is it that Matz plays for the Metz, er Mets? I personally find it perfect.
Comparing anyone, let alone a minor-leaguer coming off TJ surgery to Clayton Kershaw sounds foolish to me. From what I know about Matz, he might be better off in the pen (high stress delivery and undeveloped secondary offerings). Still, it never hurts to have a young guy who can miss bats with his fastball. I feel comfortable saying he's not Kershaw, but he could help the Mets in a few years and we all know they can use all the help they can get. (Matthew Kory) |
2010-06-18 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Given Dan Warthen's diagnosis of Johan Santana's strikeout struggles--that the problem is a bad-but-correctable mechanical habit he developed while pitching injured--can we expect Johan's K rate to improve over the rest of the season, at least back to where it was in '08-'09? (David from CT) | At least to 08-09 for sure -- he'll never be a 10+ K/9 guy again, but he is still a very, very, very good pitcher. But he's not a 6 K/9 guy. Maybe 7.5-8.0 if Warthen's diagnosis is valid. (Eric Seidman) |
2008-07-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Dan Warthen for president! Supposedly managers and batting order don't have that much impact, how about pitching coaches? Coincedence that the Mets pitching has been great or is Warthen the real deal? (pjfsks from morristown, nj) | Pitching coach's influence is different from coach to coach I'd think, with some being better at their job than others and able to pinpoint and remedy more subtle problems with mechanics, etc. We haven't seen enough of Dan Warthen to make a judgment either way yet, but if he had anything to do with Santana and his recent drop in homers, then he's already started to earn his paycheck. 2008-07-09 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Mike Pelphrey- Just getting it, was tipping his pitches and now is not or Dan Warthen has cleaned up the delivery because the curve and slider looked decent to good last night. I always thought his mechanics were "clean" and repeatable. And of course the hot chicks show up after I leave... (JKiersky from Memphis) | I've heard from too many people that he was tipping, as was Pedro Martinez. Hmm. I like the very little I've seen of Warthen. And let this be a lesson ... never leave my party early! (Will Carroll) |
2008-06-18 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Any thoughts on the Mets new pitching coach, Dan Warthen? Should Mets fans be concerned? (David from NJ) | I'll be honest here -- I know nothing about Warthen aside from his being the Triple-A coach. I think the Mets just hope a "new voice" will help. This isn't the most coaching intensive group anyway. The one guy I do worry about is Ollie Perez, but I'd bet Pedro Martinez does more for him than any coach anyway. (Will Carroll) |
