2005		Before the All-Star break: 1-8, 7.23 ERA, 80 IP, 126 H, 30 BB, 30 K, 19 HR After the All-Star break: 5-4, 4.17 ERA, 86 IP, 91 H, 23 BB, 40 K, 14 HR In this case, the All-Star Break isn't just an arbitrary cutoff: Mike Mason, who had just replaced John Cumberland as the team's pitching coach, noticed a few mechanical flaws in Anderson's delivery and worked with him over the three days off to fix them. Anderson's second-half numbers are almost perfectly in line with the rest of his career, so it does appear that his first half was the outlier. There's a lot of value in a pitcher who can give you 32 starts and an ERA of 4.50; pitchers little better than that were getting $7 million a year or more this winter, and Anderson's contract calls for only half that. Still, PECOTA is not optimistic.
2004		Like White, Anderson's one-month audition with the Royals impressed the team enough that they wanted to re-sign him, and his one month in the low-stress atmosphere of Kansas City impressed Anderson enough that he shocked everyone by not returning to his native Ohio. Anderson's career-best ERA is an illusion created by 27 unearned runs, nine more than anyone else in the majors. He is what he is: a .500 pitcher who gives up tons of flyballs, relying on his defense and good control. There's value in that, but the Royals already have such a pitcher in Darrell May, and it's an open question whether they really need two of them.
2003		A fascinating pitcher to watch: Anderson makes hitters without a solid game plan and discipline look more frustrated than Bill O’Reilly without a mirror. He’s a tough guy to root for, because he can go 15 hitters and look unhittable, give up a squib hit or two, and then leave a “breaking” ball at Sammy Sosa’s thigh that goes souvenir at escape velocity. Nevertheless, he can be a solid back-of-the-rotation starter if healthy and affordable. The Indians nailed affordable and will hope for healthy.
2002		Anderson wasn’t healthy all season, and it showed in his disappointing performance. Back spasms and a groin strain cost him most of April and June. He couldn’t keep the ball down at all, and he had a hard time putting hitters away on the rare occasions he reached two strikes. Anderson looked like a breakout candidate after a strong finish in 2000; if he’s healthy this year, he could easily be the Snakes’ #4 starter.
2001		Brian Anderson is an example of how a pitcher who’s hittable and homer-prone can do everything else well enough to make himself a fine third starter. In addition to the outstanding control, he’s got a great pickoff move and can handle the bat well enough to help himself. His career isn’t about to reach critical mass and turn him into a star; he’s just a guy who locates pitches and changes speeds so well that he’ll be a very good third starter.
2000		He pitched like a man possessed in spring training; the Diamondbacks probably should have traded him then, because he started getting roughed up as soon as the games counted, and needed a good second half to make his numbers look passable. Anderson is a useful pitcher and a reliable spot starter, but this team certainly doesn’t need the pitching depth. Anderson is good at helping his outfielders work off the clubhouse buffet.
1998		Tremendous control, gives up lots of hits but not a lot of baserunners. Vulnerable to the long ball, and you’d like to see him strike out more hitters. The Diamondbacks made him their first pick and plan to drop him into the rotation. He could luck into a hot streak at any time, but the long-term prognosis is iffy.
1997		After being rushed by the Angels, Anderson was left in the rotation at Buffalo and looked good. Unfortunately, Anderson is that breed of pitcher who has it especially rough in the AL, the flyball-tossing lefty. Cleveland is one of the better places for this type of pitcher to pitch, but it may not be enough. With Martinez’ departure, Anderson is one of the top candidates to get a regular rotation job next spring, barring any major free agent pickups.
1996		Probably just an adjustment year, which wouldn't have mattered much if the Angels had performed to expectations. But their presence in a race forced them to jerk Anderson out of the rotation and bury him in the bullpen in September. Gave up a homer every 4 innings, which is Ackerian, but still had a 2-1 K/BB ratio, and his hits/9 IP wasn't unreasonable. Highly recommended in 1996 and beyond. Traded to Cleveland after the Angels violated the rule about cutting his salary by more than 20%. He should emerge as a 15-game winner in 1997. Highly recommended.
