2014-04-24 13:00:00 (link to chat)Please rank these pitching coaches and managers in order of who would be most likely to get a strikeout if they had to pitch in a game today: Roger McDowell, John Farrell, Bud Black, Dave Righetti, Mike Harkey and Chris Bosio
(ChoppertoChipper from Edmonton)
Rags, McDowell, Black, Harkey, Farrell, and Bosio (Paul Sporer)
2012-11-09 14:00:00 (link to chat)What pitches did Ryan Vogelsong learn or improve upon during his 3 years in Japan that made him return to MLB as an above average starter?
(Paul from DC)
Vogey was hit hard in Japan, and I don't know that he made any specific adjustments on the other side of the Pacific that turned him into a sudden All Star. Dave Righetti played a big role in getting Vogelsong back on a big league mound, and his intriguing mix of pitches that run in the 89-91 mph range are key to his success by changing batter eye levels.

On the jukebox: Primus, "John the Fisherman" (Doug Thorburn)
2012-10-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Okay let’s say you’re on a desert island with the rest of the original members of the Scorpions and they offer to have their private jet pick up one member of the 2012 San Francisco Giants to enjoy a nice evening of rocking and rolling. Who do you pick?
(Lil' Sebastian from The Barn)
I bet Brian Wilson is amazing in private. He's craaaaazy annoying in public, but I think we're only at the tip of the iceberg in decoding what is real and what is not. Based on what some of the reporters and teammates say about him, it seems like he's smart and sensitive in real life, and I do appreciate his willingness to be different.

I'd really like to get to know Dave Righetti, too. And Dave Flemming, the announcer, who is just so so undernoticed because of the company he's in. (Sam Miller)
2011-07-07 13:00:00 (link to chat)Seriously, what is going on with the Yankee decision makers and their ability to develop pitching? You'd think Kennedy's success elsewhere plus how Joba and Hughes turned out would be instructive.
(Rob Gee from Philly)
It's not something they've done within living memory for most people, so they get nervous and paranoid about how to handle young players. Under the Steinbrenner family ownership, they've gotten Ron Guidry, Andy Pettitte, Dave Righetti... It's not a long list, so they're inexperienced. (Steven Goldman)
2011-06-14 13:00:00 (link to chat)Dave Righetti no-hit the Red Sox on Independence Day of 1983.
(dianagramr from NYC)
He was probably really pumped up from watching the Bill Pullman speech toward the end of Independence Day. Yes, I know Independence Day hadn't hit theaters yet. He had an advance copy. (Ben Lindbergh)
2008-05-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)What were you doing when Dave Righetti threw his July 4th no-hitter? Not as interesting, do you remember Andy Hawkins' no-hitter (since redacted).
(dpv from TN)
I was 12, and about to go out, don't remember what I was heading to. I checked the score before leaving, and he was in the fifth. I grabbed and put on a Yankee sweatshirt and stood the whole rest of the game, jumping around my living room. Then I ran out to tell people, this being back when you often learned of information via other people.

Great memory. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-02-27 13:00:00 (link to chat)More likely scenario; Joba Chamberlain never starts a game in the Majors Joba Chamberlain moves into the rotation around the All Star break Personally, I've got the former.
(Joe from Tewksbury, MA)
You might be right. I worry about a Dave Righetti scenario here. It's very easy to imagine Chamberlain pitching well in the pen and the Yankees saying, "We don't want to mess with success." To invoke Nate for about the umpteenth time this chat, last year he did a good bit of analysis (on Unfiltered, I think) trying to find the break-even point for Jon Papelbon-as-starter vs. as-reliever. We need to ask him to do that again for Chamberlain. My guess is that the threshold for the reliever argument has got to be pretty high -- Joba has to be spectacularly good in the pen, not just really good -- to justify giving up the high-side expectations of what he can do in the rotation. (Steven Goldman)
