2005 The Enrique Wilson Era lasted approximately 1,200 fewer games than the Horace Clarke Era, but still almost managed to surpass it in terms of negative value. Going into 2004, Wilson had batted .218/.266/.336 as a Yankee, and the team's belief he could start at second base was an act of blind faith inspired by a few lucky at-bats against Pedro Martinez. The Yankees' insistence on paying Wilson a premium for replacement-level abilities is yet another example of how this big-picture team often misses the little stuff. In an act of supreme hubris, Wilson bitched about his playing time during the stretch run. Some people live in a world without mirrors.
2004 The depths of Yankee-fan frustration with Boone and Soriano in October were illustrated by the calls for one of them to be benched in favor of Wilson, who hasn't had a .300 OBP since 2000. Other than the weird Pedro Martinez thing?Wilson's at .500/.524/.700 against the Sox ace in 21 PAs?he's a player of minimal value. He'll be back in '04, however.
2003 One of Visagate’s big losers, Enrique Wilson celebrated an extra couple of birthdays. As a result, he went from somebody you might argue could fill in at short for a year or two if they wanted to move Jeter to somebody who now isn’t automatically worth a spot on the 40-man roster. He should have to fight for his job, but probably won’t now that he’s nearly old enough to be confused with Clay Bellinger.
2002 A one-time hot middle-infield prospect for the Indians, Wilson has demonstrated many skills at various levels. It's entirely possible that given 400 carefully selected at bats, he could put up some numbers that would really surprise people. If not, he's a good bench guy and should have a long career as a utility player.
2001 Freedom? Maybe. The Pirates now have Enrique Wilson, Warren Morris, Aramis Ramirez, and Pat Meares spread among second base, shortstop, and third base. There’s no guarantee they’ll sit the right guy (Meares). Still, getting Wilson in the Cordero deal was a coup; he has a slick glove at shortstop, should hit .280-.290 with decent pop, and will cost the Pirates close to the minimum salary. He's a sleeper.
2000 On the subject of criminal waste, Enrique Wilson is a better shortstop than half of the guys starting in the AL. Unfortunately, he spends his time hoping Vizquel raises such a stink over his contract that the Indians finally trade Little O and hand him the job. His 1999 numbers look worse than they had to because he played through a jammed thumb that crippled him at the plate. He took one for the team: Fryman was already on the disabled list, and the Indians were afraid of letting Russ Branyan play.
1998 A year after being named the best defensive shortstop in the Eastern League, Wilson was anointed the best defensive second baseman in the American Association, a good thing given Omar Vizquel’s contract. His OBP took a nice jump as well. He could play in the majors right now without embarrassing himself, and he’s only 22. Should have a long major-league career.
1997 Just when you thought that the last thing baseball needs is another great shortstop prospect, Enrique Wilson starts clawing his was through the higher levels of an organization. Wilson is an excellent shortstop, switch-hits and can run a little. Unfortunately, the Tribe is committed to Omar Vizquel through 2002, so Wilson will be moving up to Buffalo in ’97, and no farther. Because of Vizquel, there’s been some offseason experimentation with moving Wilson to second, but so far he’s still a shortstop. Named the best defensive shortstop in the Eastern League, with the best infield arm.

2010-10-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)So what did you think of the fans' involvement in the Yankee run production last night?
(Peter Q from San Diego)
Hey, Pete. I owe you a phone call... I think until they build ballparks with the appropriate setbacks, that stuff is going to happen and I don't get too exercised about it. I've never quite understood what the appeal of catching a ball is anyway. It's... a ball. Sure, Enrique Wilson fouled it into the stands, but does that really make it that special. Are you going to tell your grandkids that you caught the ball that Ramiro Pena hit? Your grandchildren are going to be living underwater anyway, and won't have any idea what you're talking about. (Steven Goldman)
2009-08-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)When do you see Ruben Tejada making an impact in the majors and what kind of impact do you see him making?
(Carl from Buffalo, NY)
Ruben Tejada is going to be a big leaguer, but not an impact one. For me, he's kind of a future Enrique Wilson kind of player. (Kevin Goldstein)
2008-10-20 13:00:00 (link to chat)If you had a gun to your head, would you say that Torre 1. got the Yankees and extra WS or two through cool-headedness; 2. Cost them one or two through his bullpen usage; 3. Probably had no effect. Substitute other reasons for 1 & 2 if I'm off. Thanks!
(Tony from Brooklyn, NY)
Do I have to have a gun to my head? Can I say that it was sometimes 1 and sometimes 2, depending on the year? Let us also say that in both 2001 and 2003 his decision-making was influenced by pathetic roster construction--if you look back at our last playoff roundtable, you can find Joe and I talking about this. In 2001, the bench was Enrique Wilson, Clay Bellinger, Randy Velarde. In 2003, as Joe memorably said, they had more lefties in the pen than the Marlins had lefty hitters. I don't know who gets responsibility for those calls. But in 2007, his "coolness" led him to sit on his ass while Joba was eaten by bugs, and I know very well that Casey or Billy Martin or Leo Durocher or John McGraw or Dick Williams would have been out there pulling his team off the field. I don't know if they would have gotten to the World Series, but his coolness became passivity there and justifiably cost him his job. (Steven Goldman)
