2005 Sometimes good ideas lead to bad outcomes. The two-year contract the Royals gave Relaford after the 2002 season appeared to be a fine use of $900,000 a year; Relaford was a 29-year-old middle infielder who had hit .284 over the previous two seasons. He was hitting .288 at the All-Star Break in 2003, when he hurt his wrist, and has since hit .216 over a span of more than 600 plate appearances. He'll continue his attempt to duplicate Mark McLemore's career as a Rockie.
2004 A wrist injury which prevented him from swinging the bat right-handed for the season's second half ruined his season, and maybe the Royals' year too: Relaford hit just .207/.279/.293 after the break. With a healthy wrist before in the first half, he hit .288/.341/.435, which is right around his performance level in 2001 and 2002. Relaford's talents are still more suited to a super-utility role than as the starting second baseman, but if he's the worst regular in the Royals' lineup, it will be their best offense in a while.
2003 Does anyone in baseball have cooler sideburns than Desi Relaford? Relaford got spot starts throughout the year, and Piniella eventually used him to replace Cirillo at third during September, another opportunity to tweak a high-level Gillick mistake. Relaford offers an average bat and glove in part-time duty, which makes him a strange bench player, since he’s not strong as a pinch hitter or as a defensive replacement. Now a Royal, he may be their starting shortstop.
2002 Relaford's offense in 2001 was a surprise to just about everyone. He was far more aggressive at the plate, and that approach paid off as he hit with far more authority than he had in previous major-league seasons. Defensively, Relaford is acceptable at second base and third base, but definitely subpar at shortstop. Traded to the Giants, he should get a lot of the playing time at third base and will outhit that projection.
2001 Desi Relaford suddenly learned how to take a walk. He also forgot how to field his position in a frustrating season that saw him waived by two teams in three months. Relaford established a career high with 75 walks, but 31 errors was a pretty good indication of his defensive play. He was claimed by the Mets; if they’re executing Plan B of Operation Alex Rodriguez, expect fans to be mildly disappointed.
2000 He rushed back from his hand injury and consequently was not very effective in September. Of course, his production wasn’t that spectacular before he was injured. He walks enough to be not completely useless as a #8 hitter, but the Phillies shouldn’t hesitate to replace him if a better option comes along.
1999 In April, he was a star; after that, he was Desi Relaford. Okay, that's disingenuous; his slump reached epic proportions and clearly destroyed his confidence. I think he could be an adequate all-around solution at short on a team with offense in the right places.
1998 Very small at 5'8", 155, Relaford bounced back from a horrible 1996 and finally brought a halt to an offensive slide that has followed his ascent through the minors. He’s terriffic defensively, with excellent range and a strong arm, and went back to shortstop this year—the Mariners had been trying to make a second sacker out of him, thanks to Alex Rodriguez. He appears to be the Phils’ starting shortstop for 1998, though, despite being completely overmatched in two September trials (.190 EqA).
1997 What is a minor league shortstop to do when the parent club has a phenomenal hitter who’s younger than you? You can try to play second base, but that wasn’t going too well. Or you can get traded, which is what happened here. He’s very quick in the field, but he’s hardly bigger than Ricky Otero, at 5' 8", 155. He’s shown some ability to hit for average and work a walk; he’s had trouble adjusting to every change in leagues, and his walks are down and strikeouts up since reaching AAA. He may simply be overmatched.
1996  Slick fielding middle infielder who's young, durable, and can hit. What's not to like? Most franchises would kill for the "problem" of having a guy like this stuck behind Rodriguez or Pozo.
