2011-08-26 16:00:00 (link to chat)With Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez done, the Tigers have an extra $20M/year to play with in the offseason, I say go get Jose Reyes, put him at second, then you can run out an infield of C Alex Avila, 1B Miguel Cabrera, 2B Reyes, SS Jhonny Peralta, 3B Nick Castellanos. Sound like a plan? If not who should the Tigers go after with the $20m?
(DetroitDale from Florida (eternal spring training))
I would check with Dave Dombrowksi on that stuff -- he seems to have Tigers going pretty good these days (John Coppolella)
2011-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Do you care to expand on your worries over the Tigers' future....weak farm? Iffy everyday lineup? The rotation is locked up for a long while. Thank you.
(lemppi from Iowa)
Weak farm; Kevin had them 27th in the organizational rankings this spring. They'll have some financial flexibility after this season, and while Mike Ilich isn't afraid to spend, they absolutely have to avoid the entanglements that produced so much dead salary over the past few years. Carlos Guillen, Magglio Ordonez, Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson, Jeremy Bonderman - I can't think of a team that had so many contracts of $10 million per year blow up on them all at once. (Jay Jaffe)
2011-07-21 16:00:00 (link to chat)I 've been reluctant to make a trade since my last one was so stupid. Frustrated with Detroit for giving up on Sizemore a month ago or so, I traded Boesch - who wasn't hitting at all and looking like his 2nd half of not hitting last year and Sizemore for Mark Ellis. A few days after the trade Ellis hit the DL, Boesch went on a tear, and Sizemore was traded to Oakland where he was better appreciated. Recently, I almost offered Jennings for Kipnis, but decided not to mess up my team any further. Meanwhile, Ellis came alive in Oakland for a bit and now my Carlos Guillen is up and seemingly pretty acceptable. I still have Granderson, Adam Jones, Melky, Delmon, and Trout for outfielders - not to mention one Jose Bautista, if I didn't need him at first until Butler starts hitting again. Should I make that deal anyway on the assumption Guillen and Ellis will be injured again - or is Jennings' upside too great? (We can keep 13 non-prospects at the end of the season.)
(hotstatrat from Scoresheet fantasyland)
Kipnis has good upside as well relative to his position. Grandy, Jones, and Trout work for me but I don't see Melky repeating and I have a hate/hate relationship with Young because I see little skills growth and fluctuating states based off short-term success mixed in with long slumps. (Jason Collette)
2010-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)What is your opinion of Dave Dombrowski? His deal is up after '11. Do GM's go into seasons as a lame duck often or is an extension looming? Thanks.
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
It's pretty hard to denigrate the job Dombrowski has done. He walked into a real disaster zone and got the club to the World Series. We just ticked off some of the mistakes that Omar Minaya has made, but how many of those contracts has Dombrowski handed out? The Magglio Ordonez deal gets criticized, but how bad has Ordonez been? Bonderman imploded, but he was signed coming off a good year at 23. The Carlos Guillen deal was questionable at the time (2007) and you would have liked to see them being more aggressive in searching for a catcher this year. Overall, though, I think he'll be back if he wants to be. The only question is, if, as Sparky Anderson suggested about certain managerial firings, "They just get sick of seeing you." We don't know about those relationships, obviously. (Steven Goldman)
2010-05-19 13:00:00 (link to chat)Carlos Guillen's not the most durable cat around already, and now he's going to be moved from the outfield to 2nd base after he returns from the DL. Is there a concern that he will be susceptible to other injuries due to the position change? Is it wise to make a move like this in-season?
(Phil from NJ)
It's an interesting one. There's some short-term position change risk, but Guillen's played there before. I'm sure the Tigers thought this one through and said this was the best way to get Guillen into the lineup and maximize what they had. I'll be watching to see how it works out. I do think they're going to need to buy him some rest and I don't know how Leyland's going to do that yet. (Will Carroll)
2009-07-13 14:00:00 (link to chat)Most believe the Tigers need a bat. Does one bat solve enough of their issues? Or does getting a rotation piece help fortify the formula of pitching/defense that has worked so far? Thanks.
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
That may depend on what they can get from Rick Porcello the rest of the way. Do they have three starters now or two? And is last year's Armando Galarraga anywhere to be found? On the flip side, how much would a healthy Carlos Guillen change the mix? Finally, what do they have to trade? Throw it all in a hat, and I think they'll be pretty quiet. (Joe Sheehan)
2009-05-21 14:00:00 (link to chat)At roughly 40 games in, could you handicap the AL Central? Can the Tigers still go the distance w/o much from Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, and Placido Polanco?
(lemppi from Ankeny, IA)
The best single unit is the Tigers' rotation, which has been very good. I don't think Dontrelle Willis is the solution in the #5 slot--I'd rather see Bonderman replace him than Galarraga--but Verlander/Jackson (11 walks!)/Porcello is a great way to start. They need some bullpen help and maybe a lefty bat, although Larish could fill that role. (Joe Sheehan)
2008-06-20 13:30:00 (link to chat)What's your feeling about Harang? Will he rebound? Needing a 3B in a keeper, should I deal him for Atkins or Carlos Guillen -- and if so, which one?
(Dan from Brooklyn)
The peripherals are pretty good. It was pointed out to me that he's been terrible since the relief appearance, but I don't know if I want to draw a causal line there. It's one theory. Anyway, I suspect he'll be OK, although dealing him for Guillen is an acceptable idea. How good is Atkins if he gets traded away from Denver? (Joe Sheehan)

2008-09-29 10:30:00Tigers/White Sox Play-In GameAdmittedly, I haven't seen a lot of Tiger games this year, but is Inge just bad catcher? I can't see his bat being strong enough for 3B. What is the motivation behind that decision and where does Carlos Guillen play next year? (William Burke)
