BP Annual Player Comments

YearComment
2017 The changeup is going to be the determining factor for which innings Phil Bickford ultimately calls home in the majors. If he finds a feel for the changeup, the former first-round pick acquired from the Giants for Will Smith has the delivery and arm strength to work through a lineup multiple times as a starter, and the third pitch will give him another offering to sprinkle in there. If it doesn't, Bickford will still have the stuff to pitch in the majors, albeit in a relief role where his slider could play up. His development will be on hold for 50 games following a "drug of abuse" suspension.
2016 Bickford flunked a marijuana test days before the draft, but his control and athleticism convinced the Giants to look past that transgression and make him the first JuCo first-rounder in the organization's history. While he looks more like a Santa Cruz surfer than a San Francisco pitcher, he wields a fastball with explosive late life, a potential plus weapon even when it sits 90-91. Scouts also see the makings of a plus slider. Some voice doubts about Bickford's future as a starter, citing a downtrend in his velocity within outings and a still-fledgling changeup. Following in Beede's footsteps as an ex-Jays draftee who wound up in orange and black, Bickford carries more upside but also more risk. Despite an outstanding debut in the Arizona League, he probably won't sniff the majors until 2018.

2016-08-15 22:00:00 (link to chat)Hello Wilson! You might know me. Who will have a bigger impact in the long run between ex-Giant prospect Phil Bickford and current Giant prospect Tyler Beede? Thank you?
(WBG from Philippines)
I like Beede by a decent margin there. Was a fan of his arsenal's depth last year, and reports I've seen from this season suggest he's started to implement the physical adjustments he needed while maturing with his sequencing and game management. I think he's a relatively high floor guy rounding out a quality a rotation. I didn't really see it in my brief looks at Bickford, and I know David Lee wasn't convinced earlier this spring at Augusta either. The delivery's kind of stiff and he's got a low drop that discounts his height and leaves the fastball wanting for plane. That's okay to a degree, as he's got deception and some late oomph to get over barrels. But it leaves a thinner margin for error, and he needs to be pretty fine consistently with it because the secondaries weren't all that impressive. Slider showed average movement but he struggled to command it, change didn't do a ton. I'd like him better as a two-pitch guy where the FB could hopefully gain another tick or three over the 89-92 range I saw him sitting. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-06-15 20:00:00 (link to chat)Grant, Have you seen Phil Bickford and what is your opinion of him and his chances of staying in the rotation.
(Arthur from Vegas)
I have not, but fortunately we have a recent eyewitness report on him here. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=370 (Grant Jones)
2016-05-12 13:00:00 (link to chat)What have you been hearing about Phil Bickford so far this year? Not walking many and striking quite a few out in Low-A.
(Mike from CA)
Much more good than bad. Still needs to show more consistency with the slider and the change is hit and miss, but more good than bad is good. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-05-31 19:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks James. Could you rank these Low-A starters in terms of ceiling? Cody Reed (Ariz), Mitch Keller and Phil Bickford...
(Keith from Farmington, CT)
Lots of questions on the D-Backs Cody Reed so far so I'll start off by saying I think he's legit and will touch on him in more depth later on but give me Bickford, Reed, then Keller. (James Fisher)
2016-04-12 18:00:00 (link to chat)Is Phil Bickford a stud or scrub?
(Victor from San Fran)
No. I think he's inbetween those. He had a fantastic debut, though, and his upside might be the highest of any of the Giants pitchers, including Tyler Beede. (Christopher Crawford)
