2020-08-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)For leagues that separate Ohtani into two players (ugh), how would the Ohtani (P) and Ohtani (B) individually rank on the Dynasty 500?
(beringstorm from Tacoma )
Ohtani question No. 2!

Ohtani (B) slots in at 60 (right behind Eugenio Suarez)

Ohtani (P) slots in at 214 (right behind Michael Kopech) (Jesse Roche)
2020-08-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Please give me your best 5 dynasty buy-low targets right now!
(Timmuh from Tampa)
I think any top-50 hitter (Yelich, Bellinger, Lindor, Devers, etc.) who is struggling is a solid buy right now. Some owner overreact to small samples, especially in this shortened season where a few bad weeks is killer.

Five particular buy-low targets are Walker Buehler, Shohei Ohtani, Matt Olson, Blake Snell, and Victor Robles.

Players who have not played much due to COVID-related reasons like Cardinals players are solid buys right now.

I also think opt outs (Michael Kopech, Eduardo Rodriguez, David Price, etc.) are solid buys right now if you can stash them. They are out for 2020, but it is not injury-related, and they are taking value hits similar to injured players. (Jesse Roche)
2020-08-14 14:00:00 (link to chat)Michael Kopech sitting out the season dropped his ranking from 214 all the way down to....214? Missing a year of dev time doesn't have any impact at all?
(Paul from Dallas)
I actually thought we were a bit low on him in April so this balances it out a bit. An opt out allows him to be even further removed from Tommy John surgery and hopefully return to form. He always carried a lot of short-term risk anyway so little additional risk is added due to the opt out. (Jesse Roche)
2020-05-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Last years july2 class aside from Rodriquez, puasaon, and j Dominguez - anyone else standout this early or creating buzz?
(John e from Quest)
Erick Pena, Maximo Acosta, and Hedbert Perez have stood out, impressing in instructs and flashing big tools. Pena could develop into a 6/7/5 bat (hit/power/speed) who may stick in center field. He notably ripped a single off of a Michael Kopech heater. Acosta has received comps to a young Gleyber Torres, which is high praise. He has a well-regarded hit tool with potential average-to-above power and some speed. Perez is the son of former big-leaguer Robert Perez. He has a Tyler O'Neill-type physique (the kid is jacked), and probably similar FV grades for his tools with maybe a bit more hit. (Jesse Roche)
2020-01-13 13:00:00 (link to chat)Given the expected innings restrictions, how do you see Michael Kopech faring in his actual rookie season?
(Unagi from The Hills)
So this is one of those questions where I need to see how he actually looks now, but assuming he's back to the pre-injury form--and he'll be over 18 months off surgery by Opening Day--I'd expect 120 innings of good stuff, command wobbles and an ERA somewhere in the 3.50-4.00 range. (AL Central Top 10 Chat)
2019-09-06 12:00:00 (link to chat)Is Michael Kopech a top-30 SP next year?
(Simple from Question)
I think the only young pitcher that were that good coming off TJ was Harvey and he had previous established baselines of that type of performance. Oh, maybe Stras is the comp here, but he was a generational pitching prospect, and I also expect the White Sox will be very conservative with Kopech's usage, so you probably aren't getting their on bulk counting stuff. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2019-02-25 16:00:00 (link to chat)I'm a White Sox fan. Was. I don't know anymore. Talk me off the ledge.
(Redacted from Redacted)
I totally get it after the tease of Machado (and I guess Harper to a lesser extent). But your pain is relative. I'm a Giants fan, I would trade my team for yours in 2019. I get to watch 30-something players break down while the roster is spackled with the likes of Cameron Maybin and Yangervis Solarte. But back to the White Sox. There's still hope for Yoan Moncada, eventually you'll have Michael Kopech, maybe Lucas Giolito comes good, and Luis Robert is coming down the pike. And your team doesn't hate BP. (Jon Hegglund)
2019-01-23 12:00:00 (link to chat)How good can Nate Pearson be, is there a comp you think is somewhat in the ballpark?
(Ted from Ohio)
He's a tough comp (which can make him a tougher ranking). It's. bit of the Michael Kopech problem where literally nt starting pitcher in MLB actually throws this hard, so you end up with like Jordan Hicks or Edwin Diaz. (And hey, if he turns into Edwin Diaz, that's a great outcome). He's also JuCo guy so a little bit older than you think, and hasn't pitched significant time in even A-ball yet. So this is a long way of saying, there isn't really a comp but he could be extremely good. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-06-22 13:00:00 (link to chat)Should we be worried about Michael Kopech? Can he still be a bonafide SP1?
(Kam from Chi-Town)
I made a comp during list discussion that was wildly unfair and that Craig will kill me if I repeat here. Suffice to say, yes you should be a little worried. (Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-02-05 12:00:00 (link to chat)Who is the best pure reliever prospect in the minors (as in, someone presently a minor league reliever)? Would you consider a pure reliever for the 101 like Kimbrel and Reed were years ago?
(Mike from Nevada)
If Burdi was healthy he, well may have graduated, but he'd be considered. I like Jimmie Sherfy, but he is what he is at this point. I would never say never, but it's a tough road to hoe when like Michael Kopech could be the best reliever in baseball this year or something (Top 101 with Jeffrey Paternostro)
2018-02-13 20:00:00 (link to chat)Is Michael Kopech a top 30 MLB starter going into 2019?
(Joel from Lawrence)
doubtful. (Mike Gianella)
2018-01-31 14:00:00 (link to chat)Do you see either or both of Eloy Jimenez and/or Michael Kopech being relevant in re-draft leagues in 2018?
(nschaef from NYC)
I think Rick Hahn said last week that Eloy could hit enough to force the issue in 2018. Injury permitting, I would expect to see Kopech in 2018, yes. (Mark Barry)
2017-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)My farm consists of Gleyber Torres, Vlad Guerrero Jr, Franklin Barreto, Austin Meadows, Scott Kingery, Mickey Moniak, Blake Rutherford, Michael Kopech, Mitch Keller and Tyler Mahle. Plus recently graduated Amed Rosario, Bradley Zimmer and Clint Frazier. Is there any positions or areas I should focus on as I work to be competitive in 2019?
(Trip from SC)
Trip. Dude. You're kidding me, right? That is a ridiculous farm system, and seems pretty well-timed for your 2019 target date. I mean, really.

Just to be sure, I checked with Scooter Hotz of our prospects team. His take: "I agree with your assessment. I would also add that with prospects, don’t worry about positional need. Focus on getting the best prospects regardless of position. If you end up with a surplus of players at a position in the majors, use the trade market to re-organize your roster positionally. That will give you more value than prioritizing positional need over getting the best player available."

(I will note that Scooter and I are in a fantasy league together. I've spent the entire year with a surplus of OFs and a lack of RPs, and he had a surplus of RPs and a lack of OFs, and we never got it together to make a trade. So do as we say, not as we do) (Rob Mains)
2017-07-19 17:00:00 (link to chat)What's up with Michael Kopech? Is his control getting worse, or are the hitters getting better? His walk rates keep getting worse every year. He seems to be a great example of an overrated pitcher who everyone got enamoured with his fastball. To me he's maybe a closer at best.
(Jason from Austin )
It's probably a combination of both, but his previous high in innings pitched in a season was 65. He's over 84 innings this year already. You throw 100 with his arm action, and there's no way you don't tire after a while. He's getting a lot of strikeouts, avoiding line drives, and inducing a lot of pop-ups, so it's not all bad, but those ideas about him becoming a starter should probably be filed away for now. (Brett Cowett)
2017-03-29 14:00:00 (link to chat)Juan Soto, Ronald Acuna or Mickey Moniak? Hunter Greene or Michael Kopech?
(RDBL2014 from San Francisco)
Soto in fantasy, Moniak in real life. Kopech for both because he's just closer. (Trevor Strunk)
2017-03-23 20:00:00 (link to chat)Who are the top 5 prospects in 2018? Who are the top 5 prospects in 2019?
(Cubs Fan 69 from Illinois)
The correct answer is I have no idea. But this is fun. Let's say 2018: Victor Robles, Eloy Jimenez, Brendan Rodgers, Gleyber Torres, and Nick Senzel. 2019: Robles, Anderson Espinoza, Acuna, Michael Kopech, and Anderson Tejada. (Mark Barry)
2017-03-09 20:00:00 (link to chat)I'm in a 10 team keeper league fantasy draft (league is pitching dominant). I will probably have a choice between Josh Hader or Michael Kopech. What arm should I target?
(Degromination from Bronx)
You are asking us to choose between our left hand and our right. We love both players about as much as you can love pitching prospects, as they check all of our upper level performance prospect boxes. If pressed, we'd probably take Kopech, as it's a little more obvious how he does it, and I trust his ability not to be a knucklehead more than Hader's potential of cutting out one walk a start. (Ben Murphy, Ian Lefkowitz and Jared Weiss)
2017-02-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Which prospects this year have an 80 grade tool?
(CKnecht88 from Ohio)
This is my favorite question so far. Look, I'm not a scout. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the men and women who can do it. I think as far as 80-grade goes, that's reserved for top of the scale #OffTheCharts tools like Billy Hamilton's speed, Joey Gallo's power, Miguel Cabrera's hit tool (and maybe Mookie Betts someday)...I think of the current crop of prospects, Alex Reyes & Michael Kopech have 80-grade fastballs. There are a few relievers with the velocity to put an 80 on their fastballs too. If you're looking for a fun one, I think Jharel Cotton's changeup is a potential one to get there. I have no idea how you grade a screwball but Brent Honeywell for me there. (George Bissell)
2016-12-08 23:00:00 (link to chat)Connor Greene, Michael Kopech, and Noah Syndergaard (sp?). You gotta shave ones head, hit against another, and trade the other for RA Dickey, GO!!!
(Jmax from Niagara, Ont)
I would never, and I mean NEVER, dare to touch Conner Greene's locks. Jeez, there's probably an insurance company strongman rustling around in my bushes right now just for giving platform to the idea. I'll take my licks against him (figuratively! I mean that figuratively!), trade Kopech, and shear Thor if only to see what he looks like when he pitches pissed off. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-11-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Jarrett, Headed your way: Rafael Devers! Michael Kopech! Enjoy!!
(CyMature from Cooperstown Rest Home)
I've seen both of these guys already to be honest. Kopech fascinates me and Portland usually plays a ton in Trenton so it's very exciting. (Jarrett Seidler)
2016-11-22 20:00:00 (link to chat)Beyond your run of the mill elite prospects (e.g. Urias, Giolito, Glasnow) and thoroughly discussed players (e.g. Lugo, Gsellman), which starting pitching prospects are you looking forward to getting a shot this year? Why?
(PunchoutPappy from First in Flight)
I'd like to get more looks at Justus Sheffield, who I saw once and loved and should see a lot more of in Trenton. The aforementioned Michael Kopech, too. (Jarrett Seidler)
2016-09-29 13:00:00 (link to chat)Could you rank the following: Chase Adams, Michael Kopech, Justus Sheffield, and Brent Honeywell.
(Bob from Fayetteville)
Not only can I, I will! Honeywell, Kopech, Sheffield, Adams. Another good group. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-09-07 19:00:00 (link to chat)Will anybody be able to stop the Red Sox hitting machine of a lineup? Do you see Michael Kopech as more of a starting pitcher or reliever profile?
(fightingmoose from Manitoba, Canada)
They've gotta get into the dance first, no?

I have no idea what to make of Kopech. Almost nobody has sustained this level of velocity as a starter, and there isn't a lot else there yet, but he's young and has some of the makings. To the level you care about them, there have been significant off-field incidents too. But if he sticks, man, that could be something special. (Jarrett Seidler)
2016-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)What Michael Kopech is doing is amazing. What is his upside? In what range do you think he will be listed in next year's prospect lists?
(cracker73 from Florida)
Kopech has velocity you can't teach, and though the (sometimes three) digits on the radar gun get the attention, it should be noted how much explosion the pitch has as well. It's 80 velocity with life not too far behind.

He's been dominant--and he has a ton of attributes that you can't teach. He even has a lot of natural deception in his delivery, which kind of just makes you say 'good luck, guy...' to the batter when he's facing 100+ mph.

I'm sure the Player Development staff there is continuing to develop his overall pitchability, though, and helping develop finer aspects of pitching to augment Kopech's great natural stuff.

The upside could be a dominant upper-rotation starter, albeit one with a unique arsenal. He throws so hard, he might not need to rely on a full three or four pitch mix to have a disproportionate amount of success as a starting pitcher for a righty with just 2-3 pitches. Developing his arsenal and throwing more quality strikes are going to be keys for him moving forward. Clearly, envisioning a guy with this type of velo just letting it rip in the 'pen is always going to be an option as well. (Adam McInturff)
2016-08-25 13:00:00 (link to chat)Thanks for the chat. Please rank these starting pitchers in terms of stuff: Dillon Cease, Thomas Szapucki, Alec Hanson, Cal Quantril, Luiz Gohara, Ian Anderson, Justin Dunn, Michael Kopech.
(Ralph from Bronx)
Hmmm...pure stuff. This is a great question.

Lets go...Alec Hanson first maybe? He doesn't throw as hard as Kopech but I think he has a better breaking ball right now in its pure form. Then Kopech, I suppose, just because of the velo. Let's say Cease third, Dunn fourth? Those guys could be reversed, too. Quantrill fifth, Ian Anderson, then Gohara, then Szapucki. All these guys have great stuff though. (Adam McInturff)
2016-06-09 19:00:00 (link to chat)Good timing, saying to wait on Groome and then he immediately gets picked. Where do you see him ranking alongside Boston's other top prospects?
(BoSox Bobby from Boston)
Yeah, I feel like I hit 'Submit Answer' right as Groome's name came across...

I love Groome in Boston's system, which has both depth and impact. I don't think he ranks ahead of Moncada or Benintendi right now, though I would give him the nod over Devers. I think you would have to think long and hard about Groome vs. Anderson Espinoza, though Groome would probably win out with many evaluators over Michael Kopech.

Moncada, Benintendi, Groome, Espinoza, Kopech is how I would line it up. And that's a great five. (Live Draft Chat)
2016-05-17 14:00:00 (link to chat)The Red Sox need pitching. The Braves are willing to deal Julio Teheran. I didn't realize how long Teheran was under control and how cheap he is, relative to what pitchers are getting on the market now. What type of package would the Red Sox have to give up for him?
(Bryan from Boston)
Note that I am *awful* at building fake trade packages.
That being said, I've also had Teheran in my head as someone that the Red Sox (and the Dodgers) could trade for. He's a good-but-not-great young arm with years of control, so he'll cost more than you think. Coppy and Hart will likely try to squeeze someone like Rafael Devers or Michael Kopech out of this deal. Whether or not Dombrowski balks at that is another matter. (Nicolas Stellini)
2016-03-04 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mr. Karaman. Any chance you can shed some light on Michael Kopech, Triston McKenzie & Stephen Gonsalves. Or are these pitching prospects not worth the time.
(David from Atlantis)
Yep. Kopech's got the nastiest front to his arsenal:

Kopech: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28502
McKenzie: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=28224
Gonsalves didn't make our Twins list (that system is deeeep), but he's a guy that could emerge quickly if he can develop a breaking ball. (Wilson Karaman)
2016-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat)Mr. Crawford. Any chance you can hit us with some knowledge on Michael Kopech, Triston McKenzie & Michael Gonsalves. Or was it stupid to even bother you with.
(David from Atlantis)
It's only stupid to bother me if I haven't eaten and/or am sleepy. I'm only one of the two right now so that's okay.

Kopech is fun; plus-plus fastball, plus slider, feel for missing bats. If the change can be more than a third pitch/he can throw enough strikes, he could be a No. 2. Nonzero chance he ends up in the bullpen, however.

McKenzie is almost entirely projection, but projection is fun. A chance for three above-average pitches, learning to repeat the delivery. I just don't know if he'll be durable enough to pitch in a rotation.

I assume you mean Stephen Gonsalves here, and he's also fun. Gets downhill with the fastball, plus change. Just needs to show more consistency with the breaking ball and he's a mid-rotation guy, too. (Christopher Crawford)
2016-01-27 19:00:00 (link to chat)Do you think Michael Kopech can be a front line starter? And at what level do you see him at to end the year, when do you expect him to get his first cup with the Red Sox?
(Drew from Rockford)
He has that upside, though it's more probable that he settles in more as a number 2 or 3 than an ace. I'd expect him to finish the year in Salem, and for him to maybe get his first taste in 2018. (Matt Collins)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)Does Michael Kopech have a shot at adding even more velocity? Can he ne a TOR type? He seems like he has all the physical tools, I'm surprised he hasnt received more attention, suspension aside
(ASK from Jeeves)
He throws like a billion already tho...The rise of Espinoza has a lot to do with why you don't hear more about him. A bit overshadowed at the moment. (George Bissell)
2016-01-21 19:00:00 (link to chat)George. Some pitchers was hoping to get some thoughts on as well as how would you rank these three. Cody Reed, Michael Kopech, and Michael Gonsalves?
(Jerry from Earth)
Cody Reed and it's not even close. Go look at his numbers after he was traded to the Reds. They're stellar. (George Bissell)
2015-07-30 13:00:00 (link to chat)Jeff, how would you rank these 3 pitchers: Jairo Labourt, Michael Kopech, & Keury Mella? Any thoughts and opinions on them possibly having a role 6 potential?
(What Do We Have? from Far Away From the Show)
Same caveats as before, but this is tough. Kopech is the best arm for me ... electric arm and decent secondary that's continuing to show improvement. He went 6th (!) in our re-draft: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26655. Labourt seems like a reliever to me because of command issues and a non-existent change. Jeff Moore wrote him up recently: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/prospects/eyewitness_pit.php?reportid=304. (Jeff Long)
2015-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Wilson. Are there any Low Minor players whose name is not yet widely recognized and you are looking to keep an eye on as the season concludes to possibly jump on for a name breakout next year?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
Leaving out the '15 draftees, Victor Robles is probably the biggest helium guy of the year. Our Mark Anderson just tossed three 7's onto his ledger, linked below. Javier Guerra and Amed Rosario are a couple interesting shortstops. And while another one, Jorge Mateo, has gotten a lot of attention for his wheels, Rockies A-ball CFer Wes Rogers is a dude with a similar skillset & more polished hit tool. Potential SB beast. Jomar Reyes is a fan favorite of our scouting team. Amaurys Minier & Lewin Diaz in the Twins system are also both interesting raw power bats. Arms you'll be hearing a lot more about include Anderson Espinoza, Franklyn Kilome, Michael Kopech (though he's suspended), and the now-in-High-A Francis Martes (whose CB is just disgusting). (Wilson Karaman)
2015-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Chris. Between Keury Mella, Jairo Labourt, and Michael Kopech, what would your order be of these prospects if you had them in your farm? Any thoughts and opinions on them if all could possibly be role 6 pitchers?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
Boy that's a great question. I'd probably go Kopech, Labourt, Mella. Kopech's arm strenght is just stupid, and he's flashing a pretty nice curveball, though the delivery isn't ideal. If Labourt starts throwing more strikes he wins, but I need to see him do that. (Christopher Crawford)
2015-07-01 13:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Wilson. Any thoughts on Keury Mella, Blake Snell, and Michael Kopech? Think they can all possibly be role 6 pitchers?
(kiper90 from Rochester, NY)
Mella has one of the better fastballs I've seen this year, and had made some notable strides in refining his delivery when I caught him at the Cal League AS game last week. Note on him here: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26806 Full report from earlier in the year here: http://www.minorleagueball.com/2015/4/13/8398623/scouting-the-california-league-tyler-beede-keury-mella-brett-phillips

Snell still faces some command and arsenal depth concerns, but the performance has obviously been lights out this year. And Kopech might have the most upside of all on account of an evil FB in his own right: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=26455 (Wilson Karaman)
2015-07-02 15:00:00 (link to chat)How would you compare Michael Kopech, Anderson Espinoza, and Yadier Alvarez? If you could only pick one, who would you take?
(Dude from Not work)
I haven't seen enough of these guys yet to make a fair assessment. Good research opportunity, though, so thanks for pointing me in that direction. (Doug Thorburn)
2015-06-15 19:00:00 (link to chat)Who do you like better from the 2014 draft class, Brent Honeywell or Michael Kopech?
(Alex from Baton Rouge)
Honeywell. I like both, but prefer the guy who throws more strikes. (Brendan Gawlowski)
2015-02-09 20:00:00 (link to chat)Hey Nick who was your favorite guy from the 2014 MLB draft that did not make the list?
(Mo from MN)
Touki Toussaint, Michael Chavis, Sean Reid-Foley, Jack Flaherty, Derek Fisher, Max Pentecost, Michael Kopech, Luis Ortiz, Forrest Wall. There's been a solid influx of low-minors talent. (Top 101 Chat)
