2017-03-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Thoughts on Kohl Stewart and his very poor K/9 average in 2016 ? (Todd from Cleveland) | I think he's another data point for why drafting high school pitchers with top-10 picks is incredibly risky. Stewart shouldn't be written off yet, but he's currently not an especially promising prospect. (Aaron Gleeman) |
2016-01-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Chris,
Curious what the buzz around Kohl Stewart has been in the scouting community. Are his lack of Ks a product of a change in approach or in a regression of his 'stuff'? Thanks as always for being on point (Pfife Dawg from Linden Blvd.) | Was just listening to "Award Tour." Stewart still has his supporters, as he should, but the stuff has seen a bit of a regression, and he's really struggled to miss bats as you mention. He looks more like a backend guy right now, which is a bit disappointing. He'll need a big 2016 to reclaim his draft stock. (Christopher Crawford) |
2015-01-20 19:30:00 (link to chat) | Reynaldo Lopez!!!!!!!!!! Where do you stand on his future...star or super duper star?
Seriously in a dynasty how bullish are you? do you consider him before guys like Crick, Chi Chi Gonzalez, Eduardo Rodriguez, Kohl Stewart and CJ Edwards? (Festivus313 from Pittsburgh) | I'd take him before Crick or Edwards among the guys listed. Think both are relievers. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-09-23 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who's the best RHP prospect in the Twins system? Jose Berrios, Kohl Stewart, Alex Meyer or someone else? Thanks Ethan! (Nils from Minneapolis) | I did not get a look at any Twins affiliates this season, but the reports I've gotten on Berrios have been enormous. The stuff is filthy with a slider that could be a difference maker. Not saying he's the best of the bunch here; again, I didn't get eyes on any of these guys this season. We'll line them up for you this offseason. (Ethan Purser) |
2014-09-03 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Give us some prospects you're higher on than anyone else, so later we can mock/applaud you. Thanks! (Chris from Michigan) | Still a believer in Clint Frazier. I was on the Jake Thompson/Willy Adames bandwagon pre season. I also like David Dahl a lot. Some other names I like more than others: Leonardo Molina, Rafael Devers, Cameron Varga, Brett Phillips, Kohl Stewart. (Jordan Gorosh) |
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat) | Please rank these pitchers in terms of best fantasy career prospects: Taijuan Walker, C.J. Edwards, Lucas Giolito, Hunter Harvey, James Paxton, Kohl Stewart, Carlos Rodon. Thanks. (graham from Richmond, VA) | Hmm. Let's go Walker, Rodon, Giolito, Harvey, Stewart, Paxton, Edwards (Ben Carsley) |
2014-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat) | Jordan, thanks.
Hunter Harvey on TV: young, inconsistent. FB moves hard when down; CB: tight.
Scouts agree? What about a change? (Random Smoke from High 'n' Outside) | That pretty much sums it up. Reports on Harvey are outstanding, and I had the chance to see him in person at the futures game. I was actually sitting on the first base line, so I got to see his mechanics from the closed side. He's definitely got some arm lag. This is something that can probably be cleaned up over time, but it was easily apparent, even in warm ups.
The arm is live, and I see the big time upside. The CB is a MF pitch. CH is coming along, but he's still really young. It's a feel pitch, but he has the arm speed to create separation with the FB. I see a starter in there for sure, but I'm more content with my stance that Kohl Stewart is the better prospect (see debate with #diesel Mellen) (Jordan Gorosh) |
2014-07-22 15:00:00 (link to chat) | Kohl Stewart is really performing nicely even though the K's are not where I would hope they would be for a frontline starter, while his other peripherals are all looking very good. To me, as a "frontline" starter, you have to be able to strike guys out. What are your thoughts on that? (Jacob from Twin Cities) | My thoughts are that I don't really care if he's striking guys out at Low-A as a teenager.
Check out this debate piece, I go much more in depth: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=24045 (Jordan Gorosh) |

2014-07-07 11:00:00 (link to chat) | With JO Berrios and Kohl Stewart hopping Alex Meyer on this list, is that an indictment of the future of Meyer or just that Berrios/Stewart have had better years as opposed to Meyer's inconsistency? (@InfraRen from Minnesota ) | Alex Meyer is ranked #12 on the list, so neither Berrios or Stewart hopped him. (Jason Parks on the Top 50) |
2014-07-03 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Thanks for the chat! Who has the greatest ceiling and what is their future rotation spot - Lucas Sims, Trey Ball, Kohl Stewart, Jeff Hoffman, and Hunter Harvey. (Nicta from Peoria AZ) | I think Kohl Stewart and Hunter Harvey have the biggest ceilings here. Kohl has a very athletic delivery/body and I dig his profile. I would probably put him over Harvey. (Mauricio Rubio) |
2014-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Kohl Stewart versus Arturo Reyes tonight in Peoria. Just sayin'. (Warren Sprain from Western Mass) | I'd like to see that. Tough commute from south Florida though. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-05-30 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Nick, where would put Kohl Stewart on this class? Also, did you think you were tremendously overrated on him last year? (MNFan from Minnesota) | Behind Aiken, on par with Kolek, Toussaint, Holmes, Reid-Foley. I don't think I tremendously overrated him last year -- this was the bottom line on my submitted report:
Projected position: Front-end to mid-rotation starter; raw ingredients for a future #1 Suggested draft slot: Early-1st Round; top ten overall consideration He went around where I thought he should and his MWL performance has been about what you'd expect. I'm still on him as a front-end to mid-rotation guy, long term. (Pre-Draft Chat with Nick J. Faleris) |
2014-06-03 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Jason Parks just noted on his Twitter that the consensus is that Berrios should be ranked higher than Kohl Stewart at this point. Do you echo these sentiments? Are Kohl's lack of strikeouts of concern? (ahs430 from Anaheim, CA) | From what I have heard, this is because of what Berrios is doing rather than what Stewart isn't. I'm fine with it. (Ron Shah) |
2014-05-13 11:00:00 (link to chat) | Why Twins passed up "stud" Hunter Harvey and select "bust" Kohl Stewart? Was Stewart overrated? (Nicky from Minnesota) | No. He was rated appropriately, and still is. Harvey was underrated by many and has made that very clear in his first full-season. But just because Harvey is blowing up the world doesn't mean Stewart--who was selected ahead of him--is a bust. (Jason Parks) |
2014-05-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What happened on Kohl Stewart? Do you think he is overrated? He can't miss a lot of bats. (Harden from Houston) | Today's "Pump the Brakes" award goes to Harden. Are we already giving up on Stewart because he's not striking a lot of guys out in Cedar Rapids? You know he's also not walking many guys or giving up any hits right? I haven't seen him or gotten any reports on his velo yet, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's down from where it usually is. It's freaking cold in Iowa at night in April. Let's let a 19-year-old get through more than a month (during which he posted a 2.81 ERA, by the way) before we give up on him and make statements about what he can't do. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Any reports on how Kohl Stewart is developing? (maxpowers from chicago) | No real news, which is good news. Stewart hasn't dominated in his first three starts, but he hasn't been a disaster either. Sounds pretty good for an 18-year-old jumping straight into full season ball. Everything I've heard makes it sounds like the stuff is as good as advertised. I'm no where near Cedar Rapids so I haven't seen him, but everything seems to fit the status quo thus far. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-04-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Thanks for the evening encore, Mark. What are your feelings about Kohl Stewart, and how does he match up with some other recent top-of-the-draft high schoolers like Bundy, Bradley, etc. (Ryan from Dallas) | My pleasure!
Stewart is immensely talented and has the potential to develop into that caliber of starter. He's a sizable step behind them right now and I wouldn't have rated him on par with Bundy at the same stage of their development; possibly on par with Bradley at a similar stage though. (Mark Anderson) |
2014-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Kohl Stewart have #1 upside? ETA? (Shawn from Cubicle) | Yes, that's his ceiling, putting him alongside only a handful of prospects about whom you can accurately say that. He's still quite far away, though. In my ETA series I had him at 2017, but we're all just guessing at this point, really. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Love your articles, thanks for hosting another chat! What SP prospect do you think has more long term value/projects better, Max Fried or Kohl Stewart? (dzemens from Michigan) | Thanks! I think Stewart has more potential but it's a tight one between the two. (Mauricio Rubio) |
2014-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Give me your thoughts on Tyler Kolek. Also, is he the best high-school pitching prospect in the last 2 years? (abcgooap from Boston) | I have too much Kohl Stewart stock to say yes, but Kolek will have all the scouts looking up directions to Shepherd, Texas. He's 6'5'', 245 -- maybe bigger. Sat in the mid-90s at the Area Code Games; touched 99 in San Diego. Big leg kick with an advanced curveball.
Here's some video: https://vimeo.com/73041426 (Ronit Shah) |
2014-02-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who will be the future ace arms of the twins organization? (Beaux from La) | It depends on which definition of ace you're using. If we're employing the scouting definition (i.e. one of the best dozen or so starters in baseball) then Kohl Stewart has the most realistic chance of reaching that upside. If we're just talking Guy Who Starts on Opening Day then Alex Meyer (a probable no. 2 or 3 on the scouting scale) is a good bet in the short term. Terry Ryan upgraded his rotation this winter, but it's still mostly no. 4 types.
Lewis Thorpe also deserves a mention, though he was born in 1995 and that makes me uncomfortable. (R.J. Anderson) |
2014-02-10 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Keith Law said Kohl Stewart might be a good five years away from the majors, but baseball prospectus wrote he should move faster than most high school arms. If he is a thrower not a pitcher, why he can move faster? I wanted to know which is true? If Kohl Stewart sucks, I am so disappointed at that pick. (Ryan from Minnesota) | I can't remember the last prospect that spent five years in the minors and worked out. If he's there that long, it's because he's not panning out as a prospect. He has the goods to be among the best pitching prospects in the game. He'll take some time because he's a high school arm and hasn't even reached a full-season league yet, but five years seems ridiculous. Even if he spends a full year at each level, that's only four more years. (Jeff Moore) |
2013-11-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | After Reading your Twins Top 10 prospects, I just wanted to ask why you wrote Kohl Stewart about "more polish than projection" as a weakness. Thanks! (ZuoBing from NTU) | Because unlike most HS arms, Stewart doesn't give you as much to dream on. He has a lot more now stuff than most arms his age, but how much better is it going to get? It's not a knock as much as its a reality. (Jason Parks) |
2013-11-19 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I've got a minor league draft for a keeper league coming up, and I know I'll be choosing between Jonathan Gray, Kohl Stewart, Eddie Butler, Garin Cecchini, Clint Frazier, Tyler Glasnow.
My team is in a win over the next 2-3 years type mode, which of the 6 do you prefer, or if it is close between a few guys, why? Thanks! (TommyC from Illinois) | Frazier. Love me some Clint Frazier. (Bret Sayre) |
2013-11-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you think any 2014 HS pitcher is better than Kohl Stewart? Tyler Kolek? Grant Holmes? (Jeff L from Houston) | This would be an interesting article. Stewart's value comes in his combination of now stuff, broad arsenal, and athleticism. There are arms that grade out better on individual pitches, or consistency, but Stewart's well-rounded profile is tough to match. I'd have to really think about it. (Nick J. Faleris) |
2013-11-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Thanks for the chat, Nick. In your opinion, do you think Tyler Kolek, Grant Holmes and Touki Toussaint have better raw stuff than Kohl Stewart? (LeBron James from Miami) | Kolek has a louder fastball, but the secondary stuff and athleticism is way behind. Holmes is probably the closest based on his fastball/breaking ball combo, ability to hold velo late, and aggressive approach. It wouldn't shock me if Holmes passed Stewart's draft-time profile by next June, but there's work to do. Touki has the best raw stuff of the group with his FB/CB, but both are inconsistent. He has mixed-in a SL/CT offering this summer/fall with a lot of potential, as well, but he needs to find more consistency in his mechanics in order for the big stuff to play. Right now he just isn't consistent enough. (Nick J. Faleris) |
2013-10-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hoping you can answer my question. I know that when looking at these pitchers right now they are incomparable, however it looks like Lucas Giolito, Lance McCullers, Tyler Kolek, Kohl Stewart are top RH pitchers in next few years. Who has the higher ceiling, floor? Thanks! (Jonathan Mayo from Pittsburgh) | Giolito has the highest ceiling; actually, you can argue that he might have one of the highest ceilings in the minors. After Giolito, give me Stewart. You can make a case that Stewart has the highest floor because of his body type and current polish. But McCullers' floor is a high-end bullpen arm, so don't sleep on him. People are mixed about McCullers' long-term role, with some projecting a #2 starter and others seeing a late-innings arm. Either way, there is impact there. (Jason Parks) |
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat) | In one of your early 2013 scouting reports on Kohl Stewart, you stated that his fastball "Doesn’t blow you away with movement." Is that a major issue? (Nick from Baltimore) | With the ability to locate, change speeds and find more velocity when he needs it, I don't think the apparent lack of movement will be the end of the world. In some cases, movement can be taught without sacrificing his other assets, simply by changing his finger position relative to the seams, or other small tweaks like that. I'd bet on this being a non-issue by the time he reaches the upper minors. (Mark Anderson) |
No BP Roundtables have mentioned this guy.
A Collaboration between BrooksBaseball.net and Baseball Prospectus - Pitch classifications provided by Pitch Info LLC
Although he has not thrown an MLB pitch in 2024, Kohl Stewart threw 1,319 pitches that were tracked by the PITCHf/x system between 2018 and 2021, all of them occuring in Spring Training. In 2021, he relied primarily on his Cutter (88mph) and Sinker (91mph), also mixing in a Slider (83mph), Fourseam Fastball (91mph) and Curve (78mph). He also rarely threw a Change (86mph).
