2020-09-16 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I have Victor Robles in a keeper league. Will he ever develop into the next Byron Buxton and, if so, is that even a good thing? If Robles didn't get hit by a pitch every third day, no one would even know he was alive. (Chino5 from Hooterville) | It's been a rough slog of late for Robles, but I don't think you should be abandoning ship. And yeah I don't think Buxton would be my point of comparison. If it works it might look a lot more like another frequent-HBPer Starling Marte. I'm still on board. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-08-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Dynasty question for you. After four years of rebuilding, I've committed to a fifth by announcing to my leaguemates that I'll be tanking in 2020. So given that, should I keep Byron Buxton at $47 pending arbitration? We have a $500 budget. I should note that we use a system similar to Ottoneu's so stolen bases are weighted down and so Buxton is worthless. Thanks! (Elton from Pacific Northwest) | The boring answer is that it completely depends on whether you'd have a better use of that money. If you're taking and will have money to spare, I don't think it's a terrible decision to roll the dice on Buxton to see if he breaks out in 2020 and you can flip him for future assets. But, no, I don't think you would feel bad about cutting Buxton at that price point. I wouldn't be holding onto him, if it were me, but there's an argument for it if you have money to burn. (JP Breen) |
2019-07-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey is uhhh Byron Buxton good (offensively)? (Gabe from Texas) | Yeah if this is what he's doing it's pretty good (when healthy), especially when paired with that defense. From a fantasy perspective, it's less so and well below our expectations of him as a prospect. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-07-08 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Is there a good faith argument for Christian Pache to be the second best prospect? It feels like the stuff that makes him good (double plus glove ingood wheels, strong arm) gives him a fairly high floor. Is the delta of outcomes “Kevin kiermaier” to “what we wanted Byron Buxton to be” or am I wildly overrating him? (Bring Back Hegelbon from Online) | On the one hand, you did just describe Juan Lagares. On the other hand, Lagares did have a couple two-plus WARP seasons. But you'd have to *really* believe in Pache's bat to get him to 2 globally, in ways we just don't, and Kiermaier as a floor is aggressive for my tastes (few have a floor that high). (Jarrett Seidler) |
2019-05-13 16:00:00 (link to chat) | Is the “ new” Buxton for real?.. care to guess some numbers on a peak season for him? (The old professor from Heavens dugout) | I think Byron Buxton's improvements are for real, in the sense that he's healthy, he's made some mechanical swing changes, and his batted-ball profile has changed. But also I've thought Buxton's improvements were for real before, often with various reasons, so I wouldn't blame anyone for not viewing me as the most trustworthy source of Buxton's for-realness. (Aaron Gleeman) |
2019-05-13 16:00:00 (link to chat) | Can you provide some explanation behind the decision to bat Marwin Gonzalez cleanup the other day? I know he's been hitting better the past 7-10 days, and a doubleheader was involved, but it still seems like there were several better candidates for that slot in the order. (Mike from Saint Paul) | Marwin Gonzalez hit cleanup yesterday against a left-handed pitcher. The hitters behind him in the Twins' lineup were C.J. Cron, Max Kepler, Ehire Adrianza, Jake Cave, and Byron Buxton. Kepler and Cave are lefties. Adrianza is a poor hitter. Buxton has hit ninth all year and has also often been a poor hitter. I suppose you could have flipped Gonzalez and Cron, but there's no real impact there. (Aaron Gleeman) |
2019-05-03 13:00:00 (link to chat) | In a dynasty league where I'm rebuilding and all my pitchers have been converted to relievers, I recently traded Yordan Alvarez for Trevor Williams. My second best hitter is either Byron Buxton or Avisail Garcia so Yordan seemed expendable to me. Did I do well here? (Aaron from Minnesota) | I like Williams in deep leagues (it's not clear to me how deep the league is here), and uh, I'm not sure Avisail Garcia is a good reason to declare anyone expendable, so I'm not sure about the logic. It's fine, I guess. Alvarez has been a freak at the plate this year in Triple-A, and while I think it might be "fine" for you, I think there's more downside than upside going forward. (Craig Goldstein) |
2019-02-08 11:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Vidal Brujan have the most exciting comps in the minors outside of Vlad Jr? Because DAMN, there are four current MVP candidates there and another former all-star for good measure. (Bearry from VT) | PECOTA has Betts, Ramirez, and Schoop. I think Schoop is there to keep you grounded. There's a funny thing about prospects and their comps--they can start really nice but they can start to shift away to normalcy after some exposure. Aaron Gleeman had a funny note about how Byron Buxton and Miguel Sano have gone from gaudy to pedestrian comps. And by funny note I mean deeply saddening. (Harry Pavlidis) |
2018-12-18 13:00:00 (link to chat) | On a scale of 1-10 💩's, how many 💩's would you give the balance of Byron Buxton's playing career? (Clifford from Minneapolis) | Clifford, sadly, our chat interface completely garbled your unit of measure there. So let me just generally say that I am hopeful that the Twins stop screwing around with Buxton. There have been a lot of changes there--new front-office and on-field personnel in leadership roles--and one would hope that they either give him the CF job or send him somewhere else. There's a lot to be concerned about, of course, but he's flashed way more talent than, say, Billy Hamilton, and Hamilton's going to make at least $5.25 million this year from Kansas City. I expect his legs and glove to compensate for what could be only a league average-ish bat, making an overall decent ballplayer. (Rob Mains) |
2018-12-12 17:00:00 (link to chat) | Saw this earlier on Twitter - thoughts on a bounceback year from Byron Buxton, especially fantasy-wise? (jcarhart17 from Chicago) | He looked like a complete mess last year. The Twins didn't do Buxton any favors by bringing him back before his toe healed, but he wasn't lighting the world on fire before that. I could see him hitting .240 with a little power and a lot of steals, but I'm not optimistic he'll return the 3rd or 4th round value some (including me) were expecting in '18. (Mike Gianella) |
2018-09-10 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Byron Buxton = 💩 (Mark from Minnesota) | Will we ever give up on Buxton? He'll probably finally have an incredible full season at 29, once we've had several more years to go through the Buxton rollercoaster and finally all got off. (Darius Austin) |
2018-07-10 20:00:00 (link to chat) | In a deep 20 team keep forever league. Is it time to move on from Byron Buxton (have Yelich, Acuna, Soto, Schwarber, Robles, Adell and Luis Robert). Looking to improve my pitching and looking at Dustin May. (beringstorm from Tacoma, WA) | Sweet outfield! I wouldn't blame you for wanting to move Buxton but I wonder if you can get more. I love May, but Buxton should net you more. Try for guys like Sixto, Paddack, A.Reyes and work your way down. (Eddy Almaguer) |
2018-07-06 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I’m in a full rebuild and my roster space is limited. But I was offered Jake Bauers, Byron Buxton, and Maikel Franco for my Nick Senzel. Good deal for me, or does quality > quantity win out? (Dominic from San Diego) | That a tough call Dominic given Senzel's helth struggles this season. While the finger surgery is one thing, the vertigo problem is something else. He did seem to make a recovery from that vertigo briefly before the finger injury, but you never know about something like that. If you are in a rebuild, it's nice to get three young-ish players for one, but Buxton and Franco are not such legitimate guys on which to build. They are depth pieces at best. Comes down to Bauers versus Senzel. Personally, I'd keep Senzel or look for a better deal for him. (Scott Delp) |
2018-04-20 12:00:00 (link to chat) | I know its not a prospect question, but what's your take on Byron Buxton rest of this season? (terryallan from CO) | I think we have enough info on him now to gauge that this is about what he is? Elite defense and run, medium pop, significant swing and miss that might cause his overall performance to yo-yo a bit season to season. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2017-08-24 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Byron Buxton has quietly been a beast since July. Has he arrived? Has he been doing anything different since then that we know of? (LucasDad from MN) | Hell yes, Byron Buxton is hitting .324/.369/.532 since July 1st and it's hard not to be excited. He's a heck of a player even at a .250 batting average...if he can hit .280+, you're looking at a star. The key to Buxton's success is that, to put it simply, he's playing like Byron Buxton. We all knew this guy had otherworldly talent, and the Twins stuck with him until the results started to translate. On a mechanical level, an aggressive leg kick has been drastically toned down and you can't argue with the results. Common sense tells us he won't keep hitting like *this*, but Buxton's finally found his groove and there's no telling if/when he'll slow down. Sure, there will be slumps, but Buxton's arrived and it's fun to watch. (Ben Diamond) |
2017-06-13 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Shallow 10 team H2H categories league w/ OPS, keeper league with set amt of keepers each year but can keep guys forever. Rank these currently struggling bats in terms of dynasty value: Rougned Odor, Byron Buxton, Rougned Odor, Jonathan Villar, Alex Bregman.. Thanks!! (Ben from The Ham) | Bregman, Buxton, Villar, Odor (Craig Goldstein) |
2017-06-13 12:00:00 (link to chat) | Anything new on progress Byron Buxton may/may not be making? (Cory from Ohio) | He's still struggling. (Craig Goldstein) |
2017-05-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Any hope for Buxton. He oozes talent, but is he approaching that line where we need to stop dreaming? (gary from the bottom) | Has Buxton been a disappointment this season? Obviously. His six steals are nice if you need speed in your lineup, but he's been a pretty big drain everywhere else. I'm not entirely ready to give up on Buxton though. His walk rate has crept above 10 percent this season, which is a positive sign. Also, he's been a lot better in May than he was to start the season. He's still just 23 years old, and if the Twins are willing to be patient it's possible he could grow quite a bit over the next 2-3 seasons. His defense in center is going to be a valuable asset, and if he can get on base more his speed will be a weapon. Sounds like a player we discussed above. Although, the fact I just compared Byron Buxton to Billy Hamilton might not be what Twins fans are looking for. (Eric Roseberry) |
2017-05-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | How much faster is Billy Hamilton compared to Byron Buxton? They look similar to me.
(Dave from GA) | According to Mike Petriello of MLB.com there isn't that big of a difference. Hamilton looks to be a touch faster, but it's really close: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/224864164/statcast-introduces-new-sprint-speed-metric/ (Eric Roseberry) |
2017-04-11 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Ronald Acuna the next big prospect? (Dan from Atlanta) | I suspect we'll have lots of next big prospects rather than just one. Also, Acuna already weighed in at #31 on BP's global list, so it seems like he's already there.
And (see my response to the last question) there is always going to be fear about a player's ability to make contact as he moves up the latter until he dispels them. Even an uber prospect like Byron Buxton is having a brutal time making contact in the majors, and Acuna is already showing the need to adjust in his first year at High A. (Nick Schaefer) |
2017-03-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Any chance we see zack granite before the second half of the season or at all? I'm burnt out on Santana and jb shuck won't be here when we are realavent again. Mine as well get him some experience and see what he can do (Brian from St Michael ) | I like Granite as a future fourth outfielder, but the Twins don't have a great need for a speed/defense center fielder as long as Byron Buxton is around. He'll probably debut this year, though. (Aaron Gleeman) |
2017-01-06 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Happy New Year.
Who has the better season in 2017 Byron Buxton or Andrew Benintendi? And what numbers would you project for each? (John from CT) | If we are just looking at the offense, I'd take Benintendi easily. Buxton is still a very good defender in CF so that helps, but I don't think enough to get him past Benintendi. Maybe .250/.300/.400 for Buxton and .290/.360/.475 for Benintendi. (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2016-12-01 19:00:00 (link to chat) | What kind of stat line is Byron Buxton putting up in 2018? (Willy from Minnesota) | In 2018? Let's be optimistic and give him 15 home runs, 40 steals and a .270 batting average! (Mike Gianella) |
2017-01-18 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Byron Buxton live up to the hype? How soon? (Tim from Sota) | Yes, and he shows enough this year to make you not ask that question again in 12 months. (Bret Sayre) |
2016-12-05 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Would Byron Buxton still be the number one prospect in baseball if eligible? (Kyle from MN) | No, but he would be right there. I still think Swanson and Benintendi would be higher. (George Bissell) |
2016-11-22 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Can Byron Buxton become a good player or is he destined to become another Felix Pie/Corey Patterson type player. (Mike from NY) | He's 22 and already an outstanding defender with a slightly useful offensive profile. He's already better than Felix Pie, no? (Jarrett Seidler) |
2016-09-26 20:00:00 (link to chat) | 12 team keeper league, where we roster all 8 defensive positions, 2 utility, and 8 SPs. There aren't any weird contracts or scoring rules either. I need 10 keepers. My locks are Rizzo, Stanton, JD Martinez, Todd Frazier, Darvish, Scherzer, & Sale. I'm left to pick 3 of Lucroy, Jose Abreu, Byron Buxton, Stroman, Justin Upton, Dahl, Michael Brantley & Alex Reyes.
Not easy to pick 3 out of that, huh? Take a shot!
Thanks again! (BPchatsChangedMyLife from Niagara, ON) | I'd try to package 3-5 of those extra guys for 1 no-doubt keeper, then try to do it again with the rest of that pack of extra guys. There's gotta be some teams in your league who have a stuff or two but only 5-7 legitimate keepers that might be willing to trade one big name player for depth, right? Try to do something with the value locked in those keepable players rather than just let that value evaporate when you submit your freeze list and send several of them back into the free agent poo; And be agnostic about which of that group of players you trade - don't fall in love with your guys. (Scooter Hotz) |
2016-08-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | #1 prospect in 2018, 2019 and 2020? (Craig from Philly) | Not a minor league guy, so it's impossible for me to tell. What I will say is that the in the last five years, the top prospect according to BP's lists were Corey Seager, Byron Buxton, Byron Buxton, Jurickson Profar, and (yikes) Matt Moore. If you would've predicted three of those five from two to four years out, you're a wizard.
(Riley Pint for all three.) (Bryan Grosnick) |
2016-07-22 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Please explain in your opinion, what's going on with Byron Buxton. Merely growing pains? (JM from CT) | I don't think it's damning forever, I also don't think it is just growing pains.
What I do think is it is just another reminder at how the prospect and internet age has blinded the minor league follower to the patience and attrition that is omnipresent in player development. Buxton has every tool in the book--remember before he just out-tool'd everyone in sight, how people thought it actually might have been a *long* development path for a rural Georgia athlete? Maybe we can take the glass-half-full view here (admittedly, maybe this is trying to stay rosy) and say that they weren't wrong--it will be a longer path to him polishing up--but the good news is he was just talented enough he didn't start the actual growing pains themselves until he got closer to the big league level. I hope that he's able to find more consistency and tap into that hit tool. He's got a chance to be a special player. Will be interesting to see if he has a Melvin Upton trajectory (just in on-field stats, nothing else) or if the stars align and he's an on-base threat with power, impact speed, and valuable defense. (Adam McInturff) |
2016-06-07 12:00:00 (link to chat) | No chat is complete without a Byron Buxton question..
What are your thoughts on him and do you think he will live up to his potential ceiling? (Kaylee from Delaware) | Which potential ceiling? He was getting Trout comps once upon a time. He has struggled with spin a lot, but the tools will cover for that some. If he turns into an gold glove CF and gives you a .250/.300/.420 line, that's a massive player (Jeffrey Paternostro) |
2016-06-15 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Manuel Margot or Byron Buxton for 2017 and beyond? Or are they pretty similar? (Jim from Georgia) | Buxton. He has been at the top or near the top of prospect lists for a while now for a reason. He has been up and down, which isn't great for his development. Beyond that, injuries have taken time away here and there. (Grant Jones) |
2016-06-21 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Obligatory Byron Buxton chat question:
Still at least a future role 7 in your books? (Richie from Cleveland) | Yes, I think he'll figure out an approach that works at the major league level. Although, never underestimate the Twins' ability to ruin a can't-miss prospect. (Scooter Hotz) |
2016-06-23 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey, just curious if you think Byron Buxton's path to success could look like Gregory Polanco's, pretty underwhelming for a couple years and then a breakout? (Josh from Nashville) | It's certainly possible. Buxton's just 22 years old and he's missed tons to time to his various injuries. There's no doubt that he's supremely talented, but he's going to take a while due to all that lost time. We'll probably wake up one day in a year or so and realize that he's hitting .280. (Nicolas Stellini) |
2016-05-17 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Dynasty League fantasy draft, Byron Buxton or Brendan Rodgers? (Kyle from Florida) | I am legally required to tell you to draft the (theoretical) five-tool center fielder that's already been in the big leagues over the A-ball shortstop, as I'm pretty sure both Craig and Mike will murder me in my sleep if I don't. That's not to discredit Rogers, but Buxton is Buxton and it's far too early to press the big red button on him. (Nicolas Stellini) |
2016-05-11 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Byron Buxton appears to be producing in Rochester. Do the Twins keep him down there most, if not all, of the summer letting him get the reps or do they yank him back up before the All-Star Break to see if he sinks or swims again? (Paul from DC) | That's a really good question. There's a feeling that, for a star talent, a demotion to the minors is worse than just being in the minors; that it's sort of like having to sell your houses in monopoly at a discount and then buy them back at full price. Which is why teams don't like to bring their best prospects up until they're ready to stay. But I don't know if that applies for a guy who has already spent two long stints in the majors and might be burning over the demotion every day he's down there.
I haven't looked to see if it's a potential service time situation, but I guess they probably have something other than slash line that he's "working on" or focusing on, and that lets them give him lots of positive reinforcement as he shows progress. And I suspect (barring a service time issue) he'll be up sooner, rather than later. (Sam Miller) |
2016-04-25 23:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Wilson - 12 team 5x5 root dynasty, 10 player minor league system... Ian Happ is currently a free agent. I have no one to drop, my bottom few guys are Lewis Brinson, Sean Manaea, Rafael Devers, and Byron Buxton. Would you suggest trying to move a couple of them together for someone to make room for Ian or no? I am very bullish on Manaea, I know he's the easy answer to move. What are your thoughts on my situation and Happ's ceiling? Thank you. (TrickDaddy14 from Yompton) | I've liked watching Happ hit since the Cape a couple summers ago, and especially if he stays at 2B as the Cubs seem committed to trying, I really like him as a dynasty asset. I get that you like Manaea, but in a league that shallow I'd strongly prefer Happ. (Wilson Karaman) |
2016-04-21 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Think any less of Byron Buxton? (Cory from Ohio) | A little bit, although in the long term I think he'll be fine. With all of the injuries he's had, I do wonder if he hasn't quite had enough time in the minors. In redraft leagues, you have to knock him down at this point. (Mike Gianella) |
2016-04-12 18:00:00 (link to chat) | Describe Byron Buxton is 2 words or less….GO (Tommy from Wisconsin) | Byron Buxton. (Christopher Crawford) |
2016-03-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Is Byron Buxton going to be a better baseball player than fanasy baseball player? (Brian from St. P) | I think that's a good way of putting it. Good defensive center fielders are always better in real life than fantasy because defense doesn't matter and unlike the infield, the corner guys don't have to take any sort of positional hit. Plus a standard league rewards batting average over secondary skills, which hurts Buxton too.
That said, he still ought to be a really good fantasy player if his power develops and he steals 30 bases a year, so everything's relative. (Michael Baumann) |
2016-03-09 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Hi Mike, Who do you consider the best true 5 tool prospect in the minors? (Cal Guy from Cal) | Are we still counting Byron Buxton because he's rookie eligible? It's him if you are. (Mike Gianella) |
2016-02-23 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who are some prospects that you feel will make an immediate impact this year in the big leagues? (Kevin from Iowa) | I guess Byron Buxton and Corey Seager still count. Gotta put them right at the top of the list; defense translates smoothly. A.J. Reed is PECOTA's darling, then Wilson Karaman's, then mine. I love J.O. Berrios, too. Living in Minnesota, I hope he's up here ASAP. Not exactly under the radar, but those are the dudes. (Matthew Trueblood) |
2016-02-23 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What kind of lines is Byron Buxton putting up in 2-3 years? (Henry from MN) | .280/.370/.480? Too conservative? I dunno. Gotta love a balanced skill set. I think if he ever approximates Trout's value, though, it will be more about his legs than glove than about his bat. (Matthew Trueblood) |
2016-01-20 13:00:00 (link to chat) | If Lewis Brinson hits his ultimate tools based ceiling, is he basically centerfield Jesus? (MonkeyEpoxy from Amarillo) | I wouldn't go that far, Byron Buxton is centerfield Jesus still, to me. If Brinson maxes out, he's more like....centerfield Santa Claus. (Christopher Crawford) |
2015-09-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Watching Byron Buxton's debut at the plate has been as depressing as his glovework and arm have been thrilling. Is that anything more than typical adjustment to the bigs (seeing has he's had a fraction of the upper minors PAs as peers), or is a reevaluation of his bat tools in order? (Mike from NY) | You know... over last couple years I had preached patience with Buxton. Preferred Correa. Buxton really didn't understand his swing or have a great approach in my views. I thought he coasted on the crazy loud tools, awesome bat speed and the fact he's a superman level athlete. The upside here is that... well, he does have crazy loud tools, awesome bat speed and he is a superman level athlete! I think the lost developmental time weighs very heavily here. Not sure what Twins PD could have done differently. You needed to keep advancing him to challenge him so he couldn't coast on his tools. This may just take a little while and he may have to be a post hype guy. (Al Skorupa) |
2015-08-13 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Really sweating here, Greg. I was offered Kris Bryant and Byron Buxton for my Bryce Harper. Standard 16 team dynasty with OPS thrown on. Don't have any glaring needs. What do you think about this deal? (PJ Skizzip from New York, New York) | Harper is an absolute monster at present where Bryant is merely great, but I'll go with the duo to spread out the risk some. If they can stay healthy and approach expectations, Buxton and Bryant would be a pretty lethal pair, with coverage of all categories. (Greg Wellemeyer) |
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey what's good Mike. I'm in a 6x6 dynasty (OPS and QS). I was offered Kris Bryant and Byron Buxton for my Bryce Harper and one of Jesse Winker/Sean Manaea. How close is this deal to being favorable for me, and which one of the two guys should I include? Thanks in advance man! (JT Smooth from Loveboat Cap'n) | Love your handle.
Wow, that's a pretty solid offer. I'd include Manaea if you're going to make the deal. I think if you included him that's fair, and it really depends on how much faith you have in the two guys you're getting. You take a short-term hit the next couple of years with Harper, but I think Buxton has a $30-35 value ceiling and you eventually win this trade. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat) | In a dynasty league, which would you deal for Schwarber in a 1 for 1? Corey Seager, Xander Bogaerts, or Byron Buxton? Stacked beyond belief everywhere else besides C, but a little concerned Schwarber doesn't stick there for very long. (Simon from Montreal) | I'd deal him for Buxton. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-07-23 17:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Byron Buxton return to the minors when healthy or do the Twins bump Aaron Hicks over for him? (BNer Chip from Wrigleyville) | It'll be Buxton. I don't think you promote him the first time unless you're serious about playing him. (Mike Gianella) |
2015-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | On a scale of 1 to Chuck Norris, how worried are you about Byron Buxton? (Brian from NYC) | Assuming Norris is extreme concern and 1 is nah he's fine, I'm a 2. Did I mention baseball is hard? Buxton is taking his lumps, but the long-term profile is still very, very exciting. (Christopher Crawford) |
2015-06-16 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Purely fantasy - Corey Seager or Byron Buxton? (Patrick from CT) | Buxton, though it's a lot closer than I thought it would be a year or two ago. Seager can really hit and I think he'll stick at short for a while. Buxton's upside just can't be matched. (Ben Carsley) |
2015-06-15 19:00:00 (link to chat) | From a Fantasy prospective - Corey Seager or Byron Buxton? (Tommy from Colorado) | I'll slip in the caveat that I only play a little fantasy baseball, but I'll take the positional scarcity and grab Seager while he's still a SS. (Brendan Gawlowski) |
2015-06-08 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Should the Twins be concerned about Byron Buxton's relatively slow start? Remember just last year he was being compared to Willie Mays and Mike Trout. (John from CT) | Well, he shouldn't have been compared to those guys anyway, because...well...those are hall-of-famers and you shouldn't compare prospects to hall-of-famers. I'm a little disappointed, but I still think he's the best prospect in baseball. Have patience. (Christopher Crawford) |
2015-06-08 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you think teams know right now who they want, if their best player available is available when they are on the clock? Or does the decision making go right up until the pick is in?
Also, Isn't Byron Buxton leading the league in Runs and 3Bs and close in SBs? I wouldn't consider that a "slow start". (The Dude from Office) | I think teams have a pretty good idea who they want to take, but I do think there's some debate in the draft room (no, it's not like Draft Day, nothing is like Draft Day). For instance, I think the Diamondbacks absolutely know who they want to take, and they've known for a bit. Teams like the Mariners and Nationals though can't possibly have any idea, there's just too long until their selections. (Christopher Crawford) |
2015-06-10 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Corey Seager or Byron Buxton? (Eric from LA) | Give me Seager. I understand how exciting and electrifying Buxton can be, but I think Seager is the better bet to be above-average for the next decade. If he can stick at short for a few years, too, that's just icing on the cake. Fun fact: Zack Greinke identified Seager as the best bat prior to the draft in 2012. (J.P. Breen) |
2015-05-22 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who's the toolsiest prospect in the history of the game? Anyone with like a 70 hit, 80 power, 70 speed, 70 arm, and 80 defense? (Mike from Dallas) | I think you can create this player on MLB The Show.
Byron Buxton has a chance to be the closest to this in the minors currently. I highly doubt it's at the level mentioned, but there is a reason he has been so hyped for his minor league career. (Tucker Blair) |
2015-05-05 15:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you think Byron Buxton will live up to the accolades? I know it's way too early but he does seem to be uniquely talented. (John from CT) | If expect him to be Mike Trout you'll be disappointed, but other than that... He's gonna be a great, great player. (Nick Shlain) |
2015-02-26 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Hey Bret, enjoyed today's prospects piece. In later rounds I always like to draft a prospect of 2 to stash until they get called up. Without getting into too much detail my keeper league is such that someone like Byron Buxton is no use to me (due to MLB ETA), but Syndergaard might be. With that in mind, who would your top 3 guys to stash be based on value you think they'll provide this year? Thanks (DanDaMan from Work) | Bryant (cop out), Syndergaard and Pederson. Rodon could be pretty helpful too. (Bret Sayre) |
2015-01-20 19:30:00 (link to chat) | 10 tm Dynasty league- Manny Machado for Byron Buxton? Waiting for Machado's power to really develop seems like it puts him on similar timeline to Buxton, whose speed (and maybe avg.) should play right away when he's called up, even if not until 2016. (Shawnykid23 from CT) | This is really, really tough for me. My initial instinct was Machado, but you make a really good point. Gun to my head I think I still go with Manny, but boy is it close. A+ question. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-12-16 19:00:00 (link to chat) | If one player would be Arnold's character (Dutch) from Predator, who would it be?
Who would be Carl Weather's character (Dillion)?
Who would be the lithe S. American woman/prisoner? (richardkr34 from Minneapolis, MN) | I'll give Byron Buxton the nod as Dutch. He's that type of talent who can control the game and outsmart even the most lethal of hunters in the Universe. Mookie Betts is Dillon for me. Initially, I was just lukewarm on Betts, much like the viewer is with Dillon at the beginning of Predator, especially after he uses Dutch's team to "get the job done." I didn't really trust it with Betts at first, but like Dillon by the end you are fully on board. As for the S. American woman, I am thinking Albert Almora. The performance hasn't really matched the tools, kind of like how she pretended she didn't know English and was holding back, but made it to the chopper and ended up beating everyone's expectations by surviving. That's a compliment for Almora as I'm big on him being a good major-leaguer. (Top 10s Chat With Chris Mellen) |
2015-01-12 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Is the shiny-ness rubbing off of Byron Buxton since he continuously gets injured? (Rich from MD) | I wouldn't say he continuously gets injured. Any injury is concerning when you're talking about a prospect missing development time. That said, he's still just 21 years old and he was going to have to prove himself at the major league level anyway. Put it this way: If you're selling Buxton, I'm buying. (Matthew Kory) |
2015-01-12 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Which stock will be higher in 2016: Billy Hamilton, Alex Cobb, or Byron Buxton? (Elizabeth from Berkley) | Skipping right over next season, huh? Okey-dokey. Hamilton is the "which of these things doesn't belong here" of the group so he's right out. I should take Cobb, but I'll take the more exciting and younger player in Buxton. The guy could be a monster and another year away from 2014 can only be a good thing. (Matthew Kory) |
2014-12-18 15:00:00 (link to chat) | two questions
1) 6x6 keeper league (errors and wild pitches) should I consider trading BYRON BUXTON for immediate help .... someone like BRAD MILLER?
2) who was your favorite TEENAGE MUTTANT NINJA TURTLE (tm)? (Ronson from The Bass) | Good god no, do not do that. Brad Miller might not even start for the Mariners. Donatello was my dude. Bo staff ftw, though I respect Rafael's surliness. That was high quality surl. (Craig Goldstein) |
2015-02-09 20:00:00 (link to chat) | Look into your crystal ball - what does Byron Buxton's best season look like (triple-slash)? (Tony from Edmond, OK) | .315/.387/.508 (Top 101 Chat) |
2015-02-09 20:00:00 (link to chat) | While I do not deny the awesome power of all things #DIESEL, I do wish we could have a little more #rig and #sparkle sprinkled in... After all, is baseball not for #lovers? That being said, who would be your top 3 or top 5 players based purely on #DIESEL. (nzach54 from Los Feliz, CA) | In no particular order: Byron Buxton, Hunter Harvey, Nomar Mazara, Francisco Mejia, and Blake Swihart. (Top 101 Chat) |
2015-01-09 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Best hit tool in the minors? I also asked Ryan Parker on twitter earlier and he said probably overall it's Byron Buxton, and best he's seen in person is Raimel Tapia (Shawnykid23 from CT) | Buxton, Correa, Seager probably top my list. Tapia, Dahl, Russell, also in the discussion. (NL West Top 10s With Nick Faleris) |
2014-10-31 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Most evaluators have kept Byron Buxton at the top of prospect lists despite the injuries, but shouldn't he be falling soon just based on developmental time considering this was largely a lost season? Do you believe in the "injury-prone" label in general? (Frank from Minneapolis) | This is a tough question, but a good one:
I view Buxton as the most talented player in the minors, and that has not changed regardless of the injuries. However, I do think at some point health becomes an issue. I don't think it affects his value on the field necessarily, but staying healthy is largely a skill. Some players cannot keep themselves on the field for the grind of the season. I am not ready to say Buxton is an injury-prone player, but the trend is obviously going in the wrong direction. Buxton is amazing to watch, and it's why we all cannot help but drool over the potential. (Tucker Blair) |
2014-09-15 19:30:00 (link to chat) | It says on the SidsGraphs banner displayed above the chatbox that their exclusive clients include Byron Buxton, Taijuan Walker and Robert Stephenson. Can you please rank them in order of exclusivity? (MRubio52 from Chicago) | Still can't believe how much BP is selling out these days. I feel you. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-08-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | How likely do you think it is Byron Buxton reaches his ceiling, and what do you personally think that ceiling is? Thoughts on Flying Dog's Dead Rise? (Shawnykid23 from CT) | I think the odds of him reaching his ceiling are slim. Not because I am low on Buxton or anything, but most players simply never reaching their ceiling. Luckily, Buxton's floor is also ridiculous, so I think he will be a very productive player in the game for a while - if he can stay healthy (although I am going to try and stay away from that narrative)
Dead Rise is so overrated. It's a fringe beer and I just do not understand the fascination outside of it being a niche beer that markets VERY well on the East Coast. (Tucker Blair) |
2014-08-08 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I'm in a 12 team keeper league. each team gets to keep 7 players for next season. who do you think i should keep from this list: George Springer, Bryce Harper, Chris Sale, Justin Upton, Byron Buxton, Addison Russell, Taijuan Walker, Lucas Giolito, Francisco Lindor, Dylan Bundy, Kevin Gausmann, Carlos Correa, Miguel Sano, Zach Wheeler. Thanks. (childgrambino from Richmond, VA) | Harper, Sale, Upton, Walker, Gausman, Wheeler and Springer. 12 team leagues, you keep guys who are contributing. Having this many prospects in this shallow a league is bananas. Drop a bunch. (Craig Goldstein) |
2014-08-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Does Carlos Correa have .300/.400/.500 25HR potential? How close or far off is that projection? (RatedRookie from Atlanta) | Incredibly, that may be within reach. I'd expect something more like .320/.380/.480 but it's all within reach. He could go a number of different directions, but he's a stud. The Astros got that one right, and yes, that may include not taking Byron Buxton. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-07-31 19:30:00 (link to chat) | Thoughts on Daz Cameron? Next Byron Buxton? (Chris from ATL) | Cameron is worth keeping an eye on, but he's not in Buxton's league, from what I understand. I don't see many (any) amateur guys, though. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-07-24 19:00:00 (link to chat) | With all the hype around Byron Buxton, what are the chances he actually reaches his ceiling? We are still waiting for guys like Jason Heyward and Justin Upton to reach theirs (I know they're still young). (Shawnykid23 from CT) | extraordinarily low because his ceiling is extraordinarily high. I was talking about this with J.P. Breen last night on the way home from Kane County, just because a player doesn't reach lofty heights doesn't make him worthless or a bust. His ceiling allows for a lot of value even if he falls short. If he's 80% of Willie Mays that's still incredibly valuable. (Mauricio Rubio) |
2014-07-01 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I'm in the playoff race in a 20-team dynasty (5x5's with OBP, XBH & QS, HLD): I gave Byron Buxton, Jon Gray, and Alcides Escobar. I received Justin Upton, Doug Fister, and Neil Walker. Essentially the type of trade you want to make as a Buxton owner, or did I sell short? (AJ from Phoenix) | #ibelieve (Chris Rodriguez) |

I received Justin Upton, Doug Fister, and Neil Walker. Essentially the type of trade you want to make as a Buxton owner, or did I sell short? (AJ from Phoenix) | I...don't think I would've given Buxton for Upton, Gray for Fister. I think you came out behind on name value as I think you could've gotten more.
Upton is a good player though, I hope it works out for you. (Mauricio Rubio) |

2014-07-15 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Torii Hunter, Denard Span, Ben Revere, Aaron Hicks, Byron Buxton, do the Twins have a fetish for this type of player or what? (Ace from PA) | Athletic CFs? Who wouldn't? Though, the only real common link between these three is position, ethnicity, and a tie to Minnesota. Otherwise, they're vastly different skill-sets. (Paul Sporer) |
2014-07-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Where do you personally think Byron Buxton's power ends up? That seems to be the one x-factor with him. (Shawnykid23 from CT) | I think he gets to the 20-home range, but the Trout comparisons ended the minute Trout started slugging .600. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-05-29 19:30:00 (link to chat) | I've been offered Carlos Gomez for my Byron Buxton ins a 20-team dynasty league (keep forever). 7x7 (5x5 + OBP & XBH). Not that it matters since they both play CF, but we use LF/CF/RF, not OF. I'm in the playoff mix. Would you do it? (AJ from Phoenix) | Isn't modern day Carlos Gomez basically the dream for Buxton? Unless you're nowhere near competing, I wouldn't make that deal, no. And if you do make it, I'd ask for Buxton+ (Ben Carsley) |
2014-05-15 20:00:00 (link to chat) | In our h2h points league where we keep 5 players in the round drafted and can keep them as long as forever, I have stashed Bradley in round 16. His injury is making me wonder if it would be advisable to change horses. Other options that could be kept in round 20 would be Noah Syndergaard, Addison Russell, Kris Bryant, Byron Buxton, or Marcus Stroman. Benches are short so keeping any prospect is a luxury especially since my team is always a strong title contender. Is anyone of the above arguably a better stash than Bradley as far as impact both this year and beyond? (Eric Nosebar from Albuquerque ) | Give me Syndergaard, Russell, Bryant or Buxton in Round 20 over Bradley in Round 16. Buxton's the biggest upside, but he likely won't contribute right away in 2015. (Bret Sayre) |
2014-04-16 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Dynasty (no minors): My team is locked at 3B (Longoria), and SS (Bogaerts). I have Javier Baez and Byron Buxton on my bench, who will be vying in the future for the DH gig on my team. The only way around this for me is if Baez ends up playing 2B on Chicago's North Side. Should I hold my ground, or make a deal? What kind of SP (my biggest need) should I be targeting with Baez if I need to deal him? (AJ from Phoenix) | There absolutely has to be an OF you can drop to make room for Buxton. Unless your OF is Trout, Harper, McCutchen, Cargo, Stanton, find a way to deal an OF and keep both Baez and Buxton. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Jeff,
Thanks for the chat.
Two questions.
First, who's getting called up next?
Second, who are we not talking about that we should be? (Number27 from Milwaukee, WI) | I was as surprised as anybody that George Springer got called up when he did, though I'd guess it means that they're closer to a contract extension than either side is letting on. I just don't see the Astros giving up the service time like that for the sake of about one win between now and June in what will be another losing season. I'm thrilled he's up, but it doesn't make much sense.
Because of that, I have no idea who's next. Some of the most obvious candidates Javy Baez, Byron Buxton, Taijuan Walker, and Addison Russell for example, have battled injuries. There are some more obvious candidates like Marcus Stroman, Andrew Heaney, Gregory Polanco and others, but I'll bet most teams wait until the super-two deadline has safely passed. Then again, who saw a Luis Sardinas promotion happening over the weekend? So who knows. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-04-21 13:00:00 (link to chat) | We know about the on-field tools, but where does Byron Buxton rank on the alliteration scale? Is it an 80? Or is he behind a guy like Arismendy Alcantara or someone else? (Joe from St. Louis) | Buxton is up there, but Alcantara sets the bar. That's some serious name flash right there. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-04-01 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Why you not sold Michael Gettys? Many experts wrote scouts said he would be better Byron Buxton. He could be a 40/40 guy. (googap from Boston) | Suggesting Gettys would be better than Buxton is absolutely ridiculous. He's a big-time athlete with a huge arm, but I've never seen him hit against quality arms, and based on my own conversations with scouts, the hit tool is likely to spoil the party with Gettys. Even suggesting he could be a 40/40 makes my balls hurt. I don't get that on any level. (Jason Parks) |
2014-03-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Are you holding out hope for Aaron Hicks to put it together or is he a bench bat? (Michael from GA) | I think Hicks can still be fine. He was rushed last year and should have been in Triple-A. He also had some underwhelming years in the low minors early in his career. Unfortunately, he only has 2014 to turn it around before he's replaced by Byron Buxton. (Jeff Moore) |
2014-02-26 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Are the Buxton / Trout comparisons without merit? What do you believe crosses over between the two if at all? (Carmen from San Diego) | I can't really sit here and tell you that Buxton will come up and light the world on fire and produce 8+ WARP in his first two seasons. I understand where the comp is coming from but I'm not the biggest comp fan.
I think Byron Buxton will be Byron Buxton and I'm excited to see what that will be. (Mauricio Rubio) |
2014-03-03 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Would you throw the generational talent label on Byron Buxton a la Griffey, Pujols, Trout? (Jake Smith from SEMO) | He's pretty special, man. No doubt. But of all the players in the minors, I'd throw a generational label on Baez over Buxton. It comes with more risk and Buxton is a no-doubt up-the-middle player at the next level and a future all-star, but Baez has the generational ceiling. (Jason Parks on the Completed Prospect Rankings) |
2014-02-18 14:00:00 (link to chat) | If you were to guess who the top position player prospect and top pitching prospect are a year from now, who would you pick? (nubber from tx) | Byron Buxton and Lucas Giolito. The dream is real. (Ronit Shah) |
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat) | Welcome Ben, I'll start you off with a curveball: Let's say every draft eligible prospect from 2010 to 2014 was eligible for this year's draft. Just based on pre-draft scouting reports and without the benefit of hindsight, how would the first 10 picks of the draft unfold? (baseballjunkie from cali, where it's already Spring) | This is an amazingly difficult question to answer, and also quite fun. It's probably better suited for an article than for a fantasy chat answer, but since I was able to access this question ahead of time, here's what I came up with after about 30 min of research. I'll note that since I'm not familiar enough with 2014 prospects yet, I've restricted your search to 2010-2013 draftees. I'll go with:
1. Bryce Harper 2. Manny Machado 3. Gerrit Cole 4. Dylan Bundy 5. Anthony Rendon 6. Jameson Taillon 7. Bubba Starling 8. Byron Buxton 9. Carlos Correa 10. Archie Bradley Toughest omissions for me were Francisco Lindor, Trevor Bauer, Kevin Gausman, Kris Bryant and Mark Appel. If Luc Giolito had been healthy for his senior year, he'd probably have made it on this list. Obviously that's not how we'd rank them now, and it's funny that guys like Chris Sale, Jose Fernandez, Matt Harvey and Javier Baez are left in the dust. Bubba Starling sticks out like a sore thumb, and Buxton was underrated. This exercise also reinforces how loaded the 2011 draft was. Last year's pales in comparison. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-01-29 19:00:00 (link to chat) | From a fantasy perspective, what is Byron Buxton's floor? Is it B.J. Upton with maybe a better avg? In general, people seem to be against giving up good MLB talent for him, but if that's his floor, and his ceiling is best in baseball, then why not? Smart baseball people are saying he's a generational talent and even if he only reaches 75% talent that's better than most players out there. If a whiff on him still produces pre-2013 B.J. Upton there's a ton of guys already in the MLB I'd be willing to trade for his upside. (The Dude from Office) | I think his floor is higher than Upton - he has a much better hit tool, and he's faster. I'm beginning to wonder if his floor is Andrew McCutchen or 2011 Jacoby Ellsbury or something. He's absurd. (Ben Carsley) |
2014-01-21 18:00:00 (link to chat) | Hi Mike! Have read MLB Buxton comps from Trout to JB Upton... Any thoughts? (Gary from Petaluma, CA.) | Byron Buxton's legit. If he turned into Mike Trout that would be amazing, but predicting any player will be Mike Trout is like saying someone will be a generational talent. Justin Upton is more realistic, but the ceiling is higher than that. (Mike Gianella) |
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat) | 20-team dynasty league. Two of the top three teams about to make a trade: Team A is younger, but lacks enough impact pitching to win a title. Team B is creeping up there in age and injury. Assuming both offenses are stacked and the pitching for both is above average or better, Team A sends Giancarlo Stanton, Matt Cain, and 1-1 pick (aka Byron Buxton) for Team B's Hunter Pence, Yu Darvish, 1-3 pick, and Dylan Bundy... fair trade? (AJ from Phoenix) | Yeah, that's fair. I prefer Team B's side, but it's fair. (Craig Goldstein) |
2014-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you think Byron Buxton is being overrated from a fantasy perspective? Sure he's a terrific prospect in all regards, but a good chunk of his value comes from defense and his arm, plus as an OF he doesn't get the same positional boost as he does as a CF in the real world. (AndrewBall from PA) | I think it's possible depending on the league, but with the comparisons to Trout (merited or not), I'm not sure anyone is overstating his fantasy ceiling. There are leagues with the LF/CF/RF distinction so I think that's especially valuable there. He might be getting overrated as much as prospects tend to, but I think the skills merit the type of hype he's getting. (Craig Goldstein) |
2013-12-10 18:00:00 (link to chat) | What's a realistic ETA for Twins mega-prospect Miguel Sano, and prospect overlord Byron Buxton? (AJ from Phoenix) | Hey hey AJ.
I would have guessed the end of 2014 for Sano, but an injury to his throwing elbow puts his status up in the air for now. Sano has been shut down from baseball activities and will be reevaluated shortly. If he requires any kind of surgery, mid to late 2015 is a more likely guess. Byron Buxton could move fast, but he's very young and finished 2013 in High A ball. A less aggressive timetable has Buxton spend 2014 in Double-A, 2015 in Triple-AAA and open 2016 in the Twins outfield as a 22-year-old starter. A more aggressive timetable sees Buxton tear up Double-A to start 2014, has him promoted to Triple-A in the summer and starting in the Twins outfield in 2015. My guess is that Buxton is probably in the Twins outfield in August 2015 and never looks back, but this is only that - a guess. What winds up happening with Buxton depends on his performance. If he rips it up this year, an August 2014 promotion wouldn't surprise me in the least. Buxton is that good that he could be in the Majors as a 19-year-old. (Mike Gianella) |
2013-12-17 13:00:00 (link to chat) | If you were giving out awards, which prospect would win Best Raw Athlete? Best fastball? (Robocles from Allston, MA) | I would probably give the best athlete award to Byron Buxton. Yordano Ventura has the best fastball.
Kurt Russell was very sly in the movie " Captain Ron" (Jason Parks) |
2013-11-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | If Byron Buxton were a free agent tomorrow what kind of contract would you offer him? (The Dude from Work) | This is a great question, one I would like to spin into something more substantial after the prospect season is over. If you think Buxton is a role 6 guy as a floor, and quite possibly a role 8 if absolutely everything clicks, would a ten year deal be out of the question? Offer ten years and $100M? I really have no idea. But I think the team wins that deal with those specifics. Great question, mang. (Jason Parks) |
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | What prospects do you think will have the most helium this offseason? (Tony from MN) | It may seem odd to say, but Carlos Correa is going to blow up this winter, and by this time next year, he's going to be discussed with Byron Buxton as one of the two or three best prospects in the game. I think you're also going to hear a lot more noise on Gregory Polanco and the potential for him to help in Pittsburgh next year. Those guys are clearly already on the radar and likely not what you were looking for when you wrote the question, but I really believe both will be even more highly regarded on Opening Day than they are right now. (Mark Anderson) |
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | If you were comparing the "Hit" tool only, which three current prospects project to have the best in MLB? (Jim from San Diego) | Oscar Taveras, Byron Buxton, and I'll say Nick Castellanos because I really believe in his feel for the barrel. (Mark Anderson) |
2013-11-14 13:00:00 (link to chat) | By 2015, Byron Buxton is________? (Sam from Las Vegas) | On the verge of destroying what we currently know as Major League Baseball.
Seriously though, by 2015, Buxton has a chance to have even the most casual baseball fan drooling at what he can bring to the diamond. (Mark Anderson) |
2013-10-28 18:00:00 (link to chat) | if you owned Miguel Sano in a dynasty league, would you attempt to cash in on the pre MLB hype? or hang tight hoping he minimizes the Ks and puts 40/yr over the fence? (Ziggy from Marley) | What can you get back? In a vacuum, I hold on to him in the hopes that he's a 30-35 home run guy in the long term. Dynasty's different than Roto in that you really have to consider the ceiling and hope for the best. In Roto, I'm more likely to move a guy like Sano. In one of my home leagues, I moved Byron Buxton and Xander Bogaerts because it enabled me to win a title. The longest you can keep a guy in the Majors in my Roto league is five seasons, and who knows if either one of those guys will be stars within that window. (Mike Gianella) |
2013-09-27 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you think I am better than Byron Buxton or George Springer? (Clint Frazier from Georgia) | I don't think there is anyone in the minor leagues better than Byron Buxton right now. He is incredible. I am a huge Frazier fan and have struggled with Springer going back to college. Right now I would take Springer just becaues he's done it throughout the minor leagues, but Frazier has the potential to be better. (Mark Anderson) |
2013-09-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Do you also think Byron Buxton is better than Carlos Correa or George Springer? (googoo from Japan) | I think Buxton is the best prospect in baseball. (Jason Parks) |
2013-09-04 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Byron Buxton is the number 1 prospect in baseball. How does he compare to recent BP #1 hitting prospects of the past few years? (Profar, Trout, Harper, Heyward, Wieters, Bruce, Gordon) (carltondavis from Washington, DC) | I don't know. Buxton is still in the minors. We have major league perspective for the other players you listed, and I can't remove that when attempting to form a relational comparison. (Jason Parks) |
2013-08-08 17:30:00 (link to chat) | What is your general approach when it comes to prospects in keeper leagues? Do you think it's best to buy low (since their prospects), or or trade them to get actual (good) MLB players? (Jake from Florida) | Hi Jake. I hope you're not the Florida Man I keep hearing about.
It depends on the league, my team, and my situation, but most prospects for me are chips to be dealt for MLB players. There are the rare prospects that I like to hang onto unless I'm overwhelmed (think Byron Buxton or Mike Trout in his prospect days) but anyone beneath that elite tier is the kind of player that I'll move if I can get talent to win now. In most keeper leagues, you can replenish your farm system relatively easily, and there is some randomness to who emerges and who doesn't. Stats should come before potential, generally speaking. (Mike Gianella) |
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | In Fringe Average Podcast, you say Twins have the best farm system in baseball. Are you sure Twins is better than Astros, Cubs or Red Sox? Especially Cubs and Red Sox both have excellent depth and impact talent. (Byron from Taiwan) | Yes; I'm sure. That's why I said it. The Twins have impact talent and depth as well. Just at a glance, they have two of the top ~five prospects in the game, including the number one overall player in Byron Buxton. They have depth at every level, and just brought in Kohl Stewart, who has frontline potential and could move very fast for a HS arm. They are loaded. (Jason Parks) |
2013-07-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Why didn't you tell me you were cheating on me with Byron Buxton? (Oscar Taveras from Memphis) | I'm sorry, baby. I just can't be true. It's genetically impossible for me to be with just one prospect, especially when I start drinking. (Jason Parks) |
2013-07-19 13:00:00 (link to chat) | 5X5 12 Team Mixed Keeper League. I am in 2nd, need BA and SB, and have weakness at 3B (Callaspo current starter) and SS (Aybar and Alcides Escobar) Have luxury of Byron Buxton in minors. Have been offered a million trades for him. Offered the following:
Longoria (1 more year on contract at low price)
Reyes (high priced, won't be kept)
Michael Choice
FOR
Buxton
Zach Lee
Alcides Escobar
Halladay (high salary)
Haren (high salary)
Am I not getting back enough? What is a fair asking price for Buxton at this point? Two superstars - one superstar and good prospect? Thanks for your chat!! (mfenedick from FL) | That'd be a pretty nice deal. You get two superstars who help address your primary needs. That's exactly what you want if you trade away your big ticket prospect. (Paul Sporer) |
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Which five players currently in the minors have the highest ceiling? (Mario66 from Pittsburgh) | Byron Buxton, Oscar Taveras, Javier Baez, Archie Bradley, Jorge Alfaro (hard to name five) (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects) |
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | I think you rank Byron Buxton so high, he is good, but not better than Carlos Correa , Xander Bogaerts and Francisco Lindor. I meant that you overrated Byron Buxton because he didn't hit for power yet. (Kevin Goldstein from Houston) | You mad, bro? (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects) |
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | You get to pick one pitcher and one batter from this top-50 to build your franchise around. Who are they? (The Ghost of Kevin Goldstein from Floating around DeKalb) | Byron Buxton and Archie Bradley. Didn't even have to think about it. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects) |
2013-06-25 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Is Byron Buxton the reason the babies are made? (Dr. Phil from NY) | If I ever make a baby, Buxton will most likely be the reason behind it. So yes. (Jason Parks on the Midseason Top 50 Prospects) |
2013-06-11 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Would you trade Wil Myers for Byron Buxton in a 5x5 rotisserie keeper league? (Mike from CT) | I might be in the minority here, because of how close Myers is to the majors, but yes, I would make this trade. I'm a sucker for upside in dynasty/keeper leagues, and Buxton's upside might be a top-three player in fantasy with across-the-board contributions. Myers will help in several categories, potentially at an elite level, but Buxton has a chance to be special. (Daniel Rathman) |
2013-06-13 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Before the season it was thought Addison Russell could be a sleeper to make the jump to #1 prospect in baseball as early as next year. Now that spot seems to be permanently reserved for Byron Buxton in the near future, but what has happened to Russell's stock so far this year? I know he's struggled, but is in an advanced league for his age. Is he still a potential star or has he faded a bit? (Shawnykid23 from CT) | Yeah, it's difficult to see a scenario in which Buxton isn't the game's #1 prospect after this season. Even if Russell doesn't make that jump (which was predicted by some), it hasn't done anything to his stock. The suppressed numbers (he doesn't turn 20 until January, and he's in High-A) are keeping the overall buzz down, but there's nothing wrong with hitting .234/.324/.435 at that level and at his age right now. (Jason Cole) |
2013-05-30 13:30:00 (link to chat) | Thanks for the thoughts on Castellanos and Castro.I fear the day Miguel Sano reaches the show. Can you think of anything that might help calm my nerves,or is this guy going to be a monster? (Chad from Florida) | Sano is going to be a classic power hitter. He's going to strike out plenty and mash when he doesn't. If you're a Tigers fan, you have every reason to be nervous...and you should be even more nervous about the arrival of Byron Buxton. (Mark Anderson) |
2013-05-10 14:00:00 (link to chat) | Probably a question best for a fantasy chat, but In a 20-team dynasty league: Giancarlo Stanton, Clayton Kershaw, and Patrick Corbin for Yu Darvish, Shelby Miller, Craig Kimbrel, Neftali Feliz, and Byron Buxton. Assuming the trade benefits the needs of both teams, which side would you rather have? (Dr. Mike from Milwaukee) | Kershaw and Darvish are nearly a wash (maybe a slight edge to Kershaw), and it's hard to bank on Feliz, so it comes down to Giancarlo-Corbin for Miller-Kimbrel-Buxton. I love Kimbrel, but closers are risky business from a dynasty standpoint, and though I prefer Miller to Corbin by a decent measure, I don't think that Buxton bridges the gap to Giancarlo. I feel that prospects are extremely overvalued in dynasty formats, especially when compared to players like Stanton - Stanton is young enough to still qualify as a prospect and already one of the best players in the game, and his future will be even brighter once he escapes the island of misfit toys in Miami.
On the jukebox: Lagwagon, "Bury the Hatchet" (Doug Thorburn) |
2013-04-04 11:00:00 (link to chat) | Care to find the nearest crystal ball in your apt. and provide an early look at the top 10 next year? (bmmolter from Mass.) | I can:
1. Addison Russell 2. Javier Baez 3. Taijuan Walker 4. Archie Bradley 5. Aaron Sanchez 6. Byron Buxton 7. Jameson Taillon 8. Robert Stephenson 9. Francisco Lindor 10. Austin Hedges (Jason Parks) |
2013-03-28 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Nick, what is your thoughts on Byron Buxton? Can you compare Frazier to Buxton? Thanks! (Kevin from MN) | Buxton is a huge upside guy with a "best in the game" type of profile is everything clicks. There's potential for power, average and above-average defense and arm strength in center field (to go along with big time speed in the field and on the bases). The catch is that, like many high school draftees, he's still in the early stages of development.
Frazier is a big time talent in his own right, but just isn't at Buxton's level as an athlete. That said, Frazier may be more adept at getting play out of his present tools and has the potential to be a a less physical, but likewise impactful talent. Frazier is relatively new to the outfield, so he gets dinged some for his defense, but there's a chance he sticks in center and could equal or surpass Buxton's offensive output. (Nick Faleris) |
2013-02-27 20:00:00 (link to chat) | In my AL-only Dynasty Lg, I acquired Mike Moustakas, Addison Reed, Byron Buxton and the 6th overall pick for Justin Verlander & my 10th, 11th and 12th round picks. Was this a good pick-up, considering that I have Matt Moore, Yu Darvish, Derek Holland and Tommy Milone as my top starters (jlarsen from Chicago) | Hard to say considering I don't know what those picks would typically fetch in your league. That seems like a lot to give up since it's an AL-only. Your staff looks deep, but this isn't a mixed. I do like Buxton a lot, but I don't like the idea of giving up Verlander without getting a top hitter back. I have been burned in the past dealing an ace pitcher for a package of players rather than one big hitter in return. (Mike Gianella) |
2013-02-25 11:00:00 (link to chat) | Thanks for the chat, Jason. Byron Buxton, Bubba Starling, Mason Williams and Jackie Bradley, Who has loudest tools? Who can be superstar? (Mason Williams from New York) | Buxton, Starling, Williams, and Bradley, but Bradley is safer bet to be impact player and Buxton has the highest ceiling. (Jason Parks on the Top 101 Prospects) |
2013-02-05 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who would you rather have in your system? Byron Buxton or Bubba Starling? (wcgopher from DC) | Buxton. Top Ten talent in baseball for me. (Jason Parks) |
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat) | Other than Profar, Taveras, Myers and Bundy whom I anticipate ranking in the top 5 of most top prospect lists, who are the remaining top 3-5 offensive and SP prospects in the minors? (Brian from Worcester MA) | On the pitching side you're looking at guys like Gerrit Cole, Zack Wheeler, Jose Fernandez and Jameson Taillon fitting in that top group. Of the position players, Byron Buxton, Travis d'Arnaud, Xander Bogaerts, and Francisco Lindor fit the bill. (Mark Anderson) |
2013-01-16 13:30:00 (link to chat) | Thanks for the chat, Mark. If you don't mind a fantasy question, which OF do you like more, David Dahl or Byron Buxton? (Pretend GM from Palookaville) | Buxton's ceiling is considerably higher. Dahl is a really good prospect and I'm a huge fan, but he's not in Buxton's class. (Mark Anderson) |
2012-12-19 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who where the best players you scouted at instructs this year? (Lewis from New Haven) | Byron Buxton was at the top of the list. I really like what I saw out of him from a tools stand point. They're loud and the package is there. But, he's a ways away and will need a lot of seasoning.
Manuel Margot, Miguel Sano, Jose Berrios, and Bralin Jackson stood out as well. (Chris Mellen) |
2013-01-02 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Who are the big Georgia kids in the draft this year? Any Byron Buxton's? (Pat from Atlanta) | Clint Frazier isn't far off. Also a score of other high schoolers in Travis Demeritte, Austin Meadows, Tery McClure, Josh Hart, Wesely Jones, etc. (Nick Faleris) |
2012-10-23 13:00:00 (link to chat) | About Byron Buxton, can he be Eric Davis? (rangerfans2 from Fort Worth) | Probably not. (Jason Parks) |
2012-09-10 13:00:00 (link to chat) | Isn't Machado going to exhaust his "prospect" status? (Chris from KC) | Probably; if he does, one of Nick Castellanos, Jose Fernandez, Byron Buxton, or Travis d'Arnaud takes his place. (Bradley Ankrom) |
