2017-10-12 20:00:00 (link to chat)How would you sort out the A's rotation next season? Sean Manaea and Kendall Graveman are the only two locks. You've got Frankie Montas, Raul Alcantara, and Jesse Hahn, who are all out of options. The 4A pitchers - Daniel Gossett, Paul Blackburn, and then Andrew Triggs and Daniel Mengden who showed promise in short stints. And Jharel Cotton who looks great when he isn't giving up homers by the truckload.
(Ken from Palo Alto)		I think Triggs / Blackburn / Mengden have at least earned a shot at it if they're healthy when the season starts. Montas has to be a reliever at this point, no? I might see how Cotton looks in relief also. (Nick Schaefer)

(Dave from San Francisco)		Well, define "failed." I mean, the guy had only two starts in which he allowed more than 2 runs through mid-May. He's hurt. Unless his hip can't be fixed--always a possibility with hips--he should be back. Gossett, who somehow hasn't been in the BP Annual since 2015 despite being only 24, will probably get a call at some point if he keeps pitching this well in Nashville, though I'd guess Paul Blackburn may be in Oakland first. (Dan from Chicago)		Depends on what you mean by lesser known. I think Pierce Johnson and Paul Blackburn could be assets depending on league depth. If you're looking for blow up potential I think Eloy Jimenez and Gleyber Torres can be valuable trade assets in 2015 as they get more exposure to pro ball. Tseng should be getting some love too. 2013-07-12 19:30:00 (link to chat)Trevor Clifton was signed by the Cubs today. He seems to be their main overslot guy (from what little information I've read). What kind of upside does he have? Also, (if you have time): Paul Blackburn, small sample size, good results. You like him?
(Steve from Lafayette)		Clifton is a fun arm, but doesn't fit my preferred profile (while he should get stronger, I don't know that his frame is one that projects to physicality -- more wiry strength). That's not to say he can't start long term, but it isn't the profile I generally look for. Nice arm and chance for a really nice fastball/curveball combo. Blackburn is a nice arm to have in the system, and he's showing well this year. We'll get a better idea as to his ultimate profile once he tackles full season ball, but you have to be encouraged by his ability to handle a good number of college bats as a 19 year old. Really bright future for the Cubs; great job by their front office and evaluators over the past couple seasons. (Nick Faleris on Draft Signing Day)

(Nate from Indy)		There are probably big-league pitchers at the back of bullpens and hitters at the back of benches (most of them Marlins) I haven't heard of, so I definitely don't have a dossier on a 19-year-old in the Northwest League who's pitched a total of 35 2/3 innings as a professional. Full disclosure: when I get a question like this, I scan the names on my Gchat contacts list, hoping to see someone on our prospect staff available. Then I paste it to that person and type the word, "Help."

This time, Mark Anderson was the lucky recepient of my IM. Here's what Mark said: "Definitely a legitimate prospect...projectable guy, good body, low-90s FB that can reach 94 and there's more in the tank down the line, CB and CH both project to at least average. possible mid-rotation guy."

So now we know those things about Paul Blackburn. I'm amazed by the knowledge of people who write about prospects, and even more amazed by the knowledge of people who don't write about prospects, but still want to know everything about them. (Ben Lindbergh)
