Internet Baseball Awards

Pitcher of the Year

by Baseball Prospectus

American League

In a landslide, Pedro Martinez walked off with his third IBA Pitcher of the Year award. Martinez was the top choice of more than 94% of voters, capping what may have been the greatest pitching season in history.

Scary thought: five people left Martinez off their ballot.

Tim Hudson's late-season surge placed him #2 on more ballots than anyone else, but he remained a clear third behind David Wells. Roger Clemens and Mike Mussina closed out the top five, while Todd Jones, in seventh, was the top reliever in the voting.

National League

While his showing wasn't as dominant as Martinez's, Randy Johnson was the clear pick for the IBA Pitcher of the Year award in the National League. Johnson garnered more than 2/3 of the first-place votes and lapped the field.

Greg Maddux and Kevin Brown were the clear #2 and #3 choices of the voters. Tom Glavine finished in fourth place and the top reliever, Robb Nen, closed out the top five.

If you're curious, an undefeated record and 0.00 ERA while pitching exclusively at Coors Field is good for 28th in the balloting.
