Manager of the Year

by Joe Sheehan

National League

Dusty Baker proved to be as popular with IBA voters as he is with the national media, running away and hiding to win his first IBA Manager of the Year crown.

Tony LaRussa beat out Bobby Cox for the runner-up slot, although Cox received more first-place votes than LaRussa.

Perhaps reflecting a season in which no managers were fired, all 16 National League managers appeared on at least one ballot.

By less than 100 points, Jerry Manuel nipped Art Howe to win the IBA AL Manager of the Year award. Howe actually appeared on 44 more ballots than Manuel, but Manuel's large edge in first- place votes (353 to 273) made the difference.

Three of the four AL West managers (Howe, Mike Scioscia and Lou Piniella) finished in the top four in the voting.

As in the National League, all 14 managers received at least some consideration.
