Minor League Update

Prospect of the Day: Yoan Moncada, 2B, Boston Red Sox (Double-A Portland): 3-for-5, 2 R.
As a guy who likes to see prospects challenged, was it frustrating to see Moncada in the Carolina League for 60 days? You betcha. Do the Red Sox give even a smidgen of a hoot about my concerns? They do not. Moncada has been sensational in 2016, and if for some reason you didn’t think 2015 established him as one of the best prospects in baseball, this should do it. I doubt you see him contribute in 2016 unless there’s an injury to a certain scrappy second baseman in Boston, but I don’t doubt that he’s ready to make said contribution.

Others of Note:

Charlie Tilson, OF, St. Louis Cardinals (Triple-A Memphis): 5-for-9, 5 R, HR, BB. Even if this was a tripleheader (it wasn’t, it was a doubleheader), this would be a heck of a day. I bet he contributes to the Cardinals making fans upset sometime this summer/fall.

Orlando Arcia, SS, Milwaukee Brewers (Triple-A Colorado Springs): 2-for-8, 2 HR, BB, K. Speaking of doubleheaders, Arcia homered in both games of his. Power is the weakest part of his game, but that just speaks to how good the other tools are.

Tyler Glasnow, RHP, Pittsburgh Pirates (Triple-A Indianapolis):7 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 5 BB, 8 K. There are a million statistics I can list to you that make Tyler Glasnow look amazing and scare the heck out of me at the same time, and I’m not gonna do it. Just start throwing more strikes and keep not giving up hits, Tyler.

Ben Lively, RHP, Philadelphia Phillies (Triple-A Lehigh Valley): 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K. Lively is never going to miss a ton of bats, but he’s tough to square up, and he throws enough strikes to make it a tough afternoon for two turns through the lineup.

Myles Jaye, RHP, Detroit Tigers (Double-A Erie): 7 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO. It’s the sexiest profile, but Jaye has three competent pitches, and when he stays in the delivery, he throws those pitches for strikes. Pitchers with worse profiles have become starters.

Miguel Andujar, 3B, New York Mets (Double-A Trenton): 4-for-8. Did everyone play a doubleheader today? Did I miss some sort of new legislation?

Harrison Bader, OF, Cardinals (Double-A Springfield): 3-for-5, 2 R, 2 3B, SB. I was as high on this guy as anyone not in the Bader family coming out of the draft, and I still underrated him. If you read these things for fantasy purposes, I’d absolutely pick him up in a deep dynasty league.

Christian Arroyo, SS, San Francisco Giants (Double-A Reading): 3-for-5, R, CS. There are just so many quality shortstops right now. I am allowed to say this once an article. Could this guy be a trade target, too? Probably not.

Michael Mader, LHP, Miami Marlins (HIgh-A Jupiter Hammerheads): 5.2 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 7 K. The Marlins are going to give Mader every chance to start, but with his arm slot and two plus pitches (fastball and curve), he could be deadly in the bullpen.

Tyler Alexander, LHP, Tigers (High-A Lakeland): 5 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 1 K. Alexander has walked just 13 hitters in his 70-plus innings, and assuming you’re not comparing him to Clayton Kershaw, that’s pretty darn impressive.

Christin Stewart, OF, Tigers (High-A Lakeland): 2-for-4, R, 2 2B, BB, 2 K. All Stewart does is walk, pick up extra-base hits, and strike out. The last one is a bummer, the other two are just ducky.

Blake Trahan, SS, Cincinnati Reds (High-A Daytona): 2-for-3, 2 R, 2 BB, SB. Trahan isn’t completely devoid of offensive potential, but the plus-plus speed and above-average glove at shortstop are what makes him an intriguing prospect.

Adonis Medina, RHP, Philadelphia Phillies (Short-Season Williamsport): 6.2 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 3 BB, 4 K. Medina has yet to give up an earned run as a member of the mighty Crosscutters, and with his advanced feel for three quality offerings, I wouldn’t expect him to give up many in the NYP.

Antonio Santillan, RHP, Reds (Short-Season Billings): 4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K. There’s a long way to go, but Santillan has been dominant in his first two starts in the Pioneer League.

Christopher Torres, SS, Seattle Mariners (AZL Mariners): 3-for-4, R, 3B. The Mariners got Torres for pennies on the dollar after the $2 million deal with the Yankees fell through, and he’s now one of Seattle’s best infield prospects. Here’s hoping he makes that money up in a few years at the big-league level.

Jonathan Piron, IF, Rockies (Short-Season Grand Junction): 2-for-4, R, 2B. Piron struggled in his time in Asheville, but there are three plus tools in his run, arm, and glove, and he’s shown some power from the left side of the plate as well. There’s still time.
