Aside from a major promotion or two, it’s been a relatively quiet week in the world of minor league baseball. As most leagues prepare for a short break and their All-Star Game, the buzz can quiet down a bit. Let’s get to it!

On The Shelf

Phillies center fielder Roman Quinn has strained his left oblique and will miss at least five weeks. This is a tough break for both Quinn and those who own him in dynasty leagues, as he was putting up solid numbers in Double-A Reading, where his hit and speed tools carried him to a .288/.361/.420 slash line with 25 steals in 231 PAs.

Movin’ On Up

Sean Reid-Foley was promoted to High-A Dunedin yesterday, and shoved to the tune of seven shut-out innings, with three walks, and 12 strikeouts. Not a bad first impression.

Domingo Acevedo, a Dominican right-hander in the Yankees system, has been promoted to High-A Tampa. Acevedo clearly was ready for a promotion after posting a 1.90 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 8 starts. In his first start, the big righty sat in the mid-90s and topped out at 98. Steve Givarz saw Acevedo just a few days ago, and you can read his report here.

Miguel Andujar, an IFA signing and third-base prospect, is only 21 and finished strong at High-A, slashing .283/.343/.474 with 10 HRs. In a recent eyewitness report, Steve Givarz describes the intriguing power/speed combination and defensives concerns. For more on Adujar, see Prospect Team member Jessica Quiroli’s article on the intriguing prospect.

More news from the Tampa Yanks: Chance Adams has been promoted up to Double-A Trenton. Adams had been impressive in his second campaign at High-A, posting a 2.65 ERA with a 0.971 WHIP. In a recent Monday Morning 10-Pack, he was described as having “the makings of a no. 4 starter, and could take a jump higher with improved control”.

It’s been a long road for Matt Lipka, the shortstop turned centerfielder that the Braves took in the first round of the 2010 draft. Lipka was promoted to Triple-A Gwinnett despite the fact that he wasn’t exactly tearing up Double-A. Considering it was his third year at the level and the outside chance that he could contribute to the the fragile Braves roster this season, it seems an apt move for the organization.

Back in Action

Yankees fans get more good news: Gary Sanchez has returned from his DL stint. Sanchez broke his thumb earlier this month but has been cleared to return. It will likely take some time for Sanchez to get back up to speed at Triple-A Scranton, but he could get another opportunity with the big league club in a month or two.

Cardinals shortstop prospect Oscar Mercado has returned from a short, somewhat mysterious DL stint. Mercado has been struggling at the plate in the FSL, and looked even worse in the field. Here’s hoping this break will help him turn it around, but I’m not betting on it.
