Staff Picks for 2014

Today we reveal the Baseball Prospectus staff predictions for the division standings and the major player awards (MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year) in the American and National Leagues. Each staff member's division standings predictions may be found later in the article. Here, we present a wisdom-of-the-crowds summary of the results. In each table you'll find the average rank of each team in their division with first-place votes in parentheses, plus the results of our pre-season MVP, Cy Young, and Rookie of the Year voting.

For the MVP voting, we've slightly amended the traditional points system in place that has been used elsewhere, dropping fourth- and fifth-place votes to make it 10-7-5 for the MVP Award, and the regular 5-3-1 for the Cy Young and Rookie of the Year Awards (that's 5 points for a first-place vote, 3 points for a second-place vote, etc.).

How is it that in none of the consensus divisional standings does the sum of the average positions ever reach 15? Also, how is it possible for the Nationals to be 1.0 consensus finisher with the Nats being 1.9? I'd have thought that the sum of those two would have to at least equal 3.

If I counted right: the Nationals were picked 1st 38 times and 2nd twice, so they should be 1.05 (not 1.0), while the Braves were picked 1st twice, 2nd 37 times and 3rd once, so they should be 1.98 (not 1.9).

I think someone was sloppy in adding up the votes.

I went back and re-tallied the counts, for anyone who's interested.

1st column of numbers is average place.
2nd column of numbers is the number of 1st place votes (there were 40 voters so there are 40 1st place votes per division).
3rd column of numbers is the number of "wild card" votes (only 79 per league, because Dan Rozenson only picked 1 WC per league).

I am always amazed at the amount of group think here at BP but this year you guys really outdid yourselves.

Wash 38 (how wrong was this last year?)

St. Louis 36 (I guess the Pirates really have no chance)

LAD 38 (I never recall such a consensus for the Yankees with all that money)

Trout 30 (even when he loses you think he actually won the award)

Why hire 40 writers when you need only 2-3 to deliver the company line?

That's really the nature of the data. Looking at what we know today, if you pick against the Tigers, Nationals, Cardinals, or Dodgers, you're making a conscious choice to pick the second (or third) best team in the division. I doubt the guys who selected the Indians, Braves, or Giants would really wager $1000 straight up against the favorite -- and if they would they should hop a flight to Vegas.

Yet despite the obvious CHOICE for 1st place, no one thinks those teams are 100% or even 90% to win the division. But they're all well over 50% and thus near unanimous choices.
