Minor League Update
Caribbean Series Games of February 5
by Jeff Moore
Prospects
- Sebastian Valle, C, Phillies (Mexico): 1-4, R, HR, 2 K. Power has never really been the question for Valle. The problem has been allowing that power to play in games because of his extreme plate-discipline issues. He’s as solid as a rock, so when he makes good contact, it goes. Unfortunately, he makes bad contact much more consistently.
- Francisco Peguero, CF, Orioles (Dominican Republic): 2-3, 2 R, 2B, BB. Peguero is ending a strong winter on a positive note as he prepares for Orioles camp this spring. The Orioles’ inactivity could open the door for Peguero to stick in the majors as a fourth outfielder, but even if he doesn’t make the team out of spring training, he does enough things well with his legs and his glove to spend some time in the majors at some point this season.
- Wilfredo Boscan, RHP, Padres (Venezuela): 1 IP, 2 H, 2 K. The former Rangers prospect doesn’t have anything in his arsenal to miss upper-level bats, which is why he has stagnated in Double-A. He has plus control, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to be enough to formulate a major-league career.
Major Leaguer of the Night
- Alberto Callaspo, 2B, A’s (Venezuela): 3-5, R, HR. Known more for his speed and defense, Callaspo paced the Venezuelan champions with a power display to help them eliminate Cubs on Wednesday night.

"...a power display to help them eliminate Cubs on Wednesday night"
If you haven't won the World Series in over 100 years, it's not too surprising to have the same luck in the Caribbean.
