Minor League Update

Prospect of the Day: Joey Terdoslavich, LF, Braves (Toros del Este, DWL): 3-4, 2B, 3B, K. International league rosters are in constant flux, and Terdoslavich was a late addition to the Toros. He went 3-4 in his first game, showing the extra-base power that makes him an attractive bench option for the Braves. He won’t be playing first base (his natural position) for them any time soon, but he’s playing the outfield this winter to gain more experience at his new secondary position.

• Chris Marrero, 1B, Nationals (Tigres del Licey, DWL): 2-4, 2 K. Coming off of a mediocre season in Triple-A, Marrero has still not shown the power that is supposed to be his best tool in a few years. He’s hitting just .130 this winter as he prepares to battle for a bench role next spring.
• Carlos Triunfel, INF, Mariners (Tigres del Licey, DWL): 2-4, 2B, K. The bloom is perhaps even further off of Triunfel’s prospect status than it is Marrero’s. Triunfel once had tools to dream on, but age, lack of production, and a devastating leg injury have ended the dreaming. At this point, he isn’t much more than a potential utility player who at least has experience at shortstop, although not enough range to play there regularly.
• Maikel Franco, 3B, Phillies (Gigantes del Cibao, DWL): 0-4, 2 K. The season could be getting long for Franco, who is just three for his last 28 this winter. As a slower, lumbering runner with an aggressive approach, he’s going to be prone to streakiness and down stretches during which he gets himself out.
• Angel Villalona, 1B, Giants (Toros del Este, DWL): 0-4, 2 K. In the Giants quest to make up for lost time, Villalona has joined the Toros straight from the AFL, where he was overmatched and hit just .200/.243/.246.
• Eddie Rosario, 2B, Twins (Indios de Mayaquez, PRWL): 0-3, K. It was a relatively uneventful day for Rosario, who I’m sure could’ve used exactly that the day after it was announced that he would miss 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance.
• Ender Inciarte, CF, Diamondbacks (Aguilas del Zuila, VWL): 0-4, BB. One year after being selected in the Rule 5 draft but being returned, Inciarte was protected by the Diamondbacks. He’s still quite raw and has no power to speak of, but he’s a plus defender in center field and puts a ton of balls in play to capitalize on his speed.
• Joc Pederson, CF, Dodgers (Cardenales de Lara, VWL): 3-3, SB. Pederson continues to have one of the strangest winters in baseball. He came out of the gate with an ultra-passive approach at the plate, which led to a high on-base percentage despite a low batting average. He’s gotten slightly more aggressive, although he’s always a patient hitter, and with Wednesday’s three-hit night, has his batting average up to .262 on the winter while still maintaining a walk-per-game pace.
